Why was it part 1 and part 2 for Ties that bind

  • It's a lot quicker that way, since they realized that the story couldn't last for actual 5 episodes, so they split Episode 1 into two parts.

  • Honestly, I think that originally they were supposed to be 2 separate episodes, but with the episode 1 so short (and episode 2 as well for that matter) Telltale thought they'd get a lot of backlash for that, so they postponed the first episode to release with episode 2 at the same time as a damage control.

  • With storybased games like this, I'd say that 1 hour episodes is too short, I like to play really long sessions in storybased games, to really get into it, heck, I completed season 1 in 2 days, which is why, even though I have played the first 2 episodes, I am gonna wait until all episodes are out and replay the 2 first episodes then, because 1 hour episodes is just not nearly enough to get me invested in the story

Also, I feel like with 2 episodes already out of the way, there have been way too little character development and or story, making the episodes so short is really hurting characterisation, I mean, I barely even knew who Marijana or whatever her name was before she got killed

TellTalegames is obviously caring for the all important hemorroid suffering market, where sitting down for awhile is agony. Just read this

  • I have only just started playing Telltale games this December, and the first one I played was Batman, and I thought it was pretty good, but after playing The Walking Dead season 1 and 2, I cant even really look back and see what I enjoyed about Batman, theyre just so much better games, and I dont know if I have a right to say this, since I am a really recent Telltale fan (mostly just walking dead fan), but I can see why people are complaining, the quality of the games have really gone downhill

I don't mind episodes being short just as long as you have enough to do and the story is compelling. The fact that you can't even explore the area and look at stuff is disappointing. IDK...maybe I'm just expecting a lot more out of TTG.

The pacing of the episode depends on it's length... shorter episode=> wanky pacing

  • yeah.. by the way. try tales from the borderlands too. it's awesome

I have only just started playing Telltale games this December, and the first one I played was Batman, and I thought it was pretty good, but

  • It was 4 episodes but they wanted more cash

  • I feel ya

You have numerous hubs that you can't even explore. Hell, why the hell can't you explore Prescott? It seemed ripe to be explored and to get to know the people.

  • The pace had evidently picked up, even in Season 2, but do you really enjoy walking back and forth, turtle-speed, across ranch with a screwdriver, then unscrew 4 screws... one after another without any suspense?

S1 was at times a big slowdown for the story. S3 - rushing to the end it seems

  • I remember that being said, I was hyped because I thought I would get more content. telltale now is making game for the masses so its more expected and we should learn to not expect much. a shame though :(

Because it was "TOO" big. It wasn't even that big, it only takes 2 hours if you combine them.

  • that what happens when you make games for the masses.

I think that the majority of telltale's decisions right now are just for money and not for the actual quality of the game

  • I'd say it's just damage control for the delay, as well as the short lengths.

  • I'm hoping that the episodes do get longer since both episodes together still seemed rather short and if you bought a season past for the cost of it for these mini episodes in my opinion is not right

  • We could do with longer episodes so we can actually get to know our main character.

By the end of the first episode of Season 1 I felt like I had a good idea who Lee Everett was and how I was going to have him react to situations. With Season 2 we were playing as Clem, they could get into things quicker because the relationship with the main character was already established.

In Season 3 though I still don't have a feeling of who Javier is and how he should react to situations. I'm tending to default to actions that agree with Clementine, partly because Javier doesn't have a personality of his own for me yet.

  • Because they're basically Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob SquarePants.

  • That's not at all what I was doing. They just have a love for money. Their daughters aren't whales, in either the literal or metaphorical sense.

  • I wondered about this myself. If it was one episode originally and split, why not just call it two separate episodes? Why part 1 and part 2?

One thing not yet mentioned here is the narrative intention, if indeed there is one. Given the start of the story with Javier and his brother, the ending of the second episode definitely feels like it should have been a very neat chapter close. We end with who we begin and so that single episode would effectively be an introduction to the real meat of the story to follow.

I suspect that was the original narrative arc. But it doesn't really feel like that is what they ended up with. For it to work, I feel the story would have had to have been told more chronologically so that we really get to feel the relationship between the brothers before the split happens. As it is, I think the flashbacks may be to patch what changed when one episode became two but the focus of that narrative was then lost. It's speculation on my part of course but the name of the combined episode fits. It should have been all about those two brothers.

But it kind of wandered and I don't think splitting the episodes did the story any favours. Thinking of it from the perspective of the writers, if that was my initial intention, I would be the one campaigning to make both episodes available at once so that at least some of my story would come across. A break in the story would have broken it completely. The two episodes needed to be presented together.

But it still doesn't explain why it was split in the first place. More just why they didn't just call it two separate episodes.

  • Well, I quite enjoyed the small things in Season 1, such as fixing the swing, I also liked how there was way more actual gameplay

  • Apparently they said it was "too big" but I think it was because the first episode ties that bind was supposed to come out the 15th of November which would be episode 1 and 2 combined but I guess most of the episode was not finished so they delayed it to when episode 2 was going to come out but fans would probably get upset so they pretended like it was never 1 episode to begin with and figured that, that for that much work deserved $10 instead of $5 and it worked I guess I'll buy any telltale game if it's not over $40
