What are your 10 favorite movies of all time and why?

  1. Arrival: it's about alines who come to the earth, and humans have to try to communicate to them. I like this movie cuz is awesome, the characters are interesting, it has grat performances, the Max Richter and Johann Johaannson soundtrack is glorious :)
  2. Interstellar: In the future, a plague kills all the crops but corn, still, corn is about to extinguish, and a group of astronauts have to go out and look for another planet to live in and leave planet earth. I like the fact that interstellar is all science, but still manages to use sci-fi. The soundtrack and the plot are cool.
  3. The Thin Red Line: A bunch of soldiers go to war. Really, thats the plot :P. I like this movie because it's not about war, it's about the soldiers, and how they react, how each think different about it.
  4. Hacksaw Ridge: A christian soldier goes to war, but refuses to touch any weapon because he doesn't want to kill anyone, yet, he saves a lot of people. This movie and the soundtrack are awesome, it has feels, the direction is well made and so is the plot
  5. Mad Max Fury Road: After a nuclear war, a man who everyone looks at as a god takes advantage of that. He rapes the most pretty woman, but they escape, and god doesn't like that. No commentaries, it's just awesome
  6. The Green Mile: A black man has a gift, he can cure every sick man, but a misunderstanding has him sent to prison, waiting his death sentence. This is one of the most interesting and saddest film i've ever seen and you cant stop watching it without cry
  7. The Shawshank Redemption: A man is sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. Once in prison he begins to change things around there, making himself a loved person in all the Shawshank prison, except for the guards and the warden. I love the characters and story of this film, the characters are interesting and likable, and that plot twist at the end...
  8. The Help: Two of black maids agrees with a white woman to write a book about what is like to be a maid. This film is cool cause it blends together some "comedy" and drama perfectly. When i watch it, i was literally begging not to have an end :P
  9. Prisoners: Two little girls are abducted, the police, alongside with their parents are willing to do anything to get them back. One of the most epic thrillers (alongside Sicario) i've ever seen, it's misterious, twisted and emotional. Plus, the soundtrack is awesome.
  10. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Ultimate Cut): Lex Luthro doesn't like that Superman is in the top of everyrthing, so he decides to make a plan to make Batman, the only person who might be able to beat him, hate him. I think this is one of the most underrated movies of all time (at least the theatrical cut), the soundtrac is awesome, the action too, the story also, etc, etc................... haters gonna hate.

PS: Sorry 4 my english

I'm gonna do both animated and live-action, in no real order.

    Top 10 live-action movies:

    1. The Dark Knight/Batman 1989 (This is a tie, but fuck it. I'm a Batman fan. Decent story, spectacular acting, action, etc. Definitely 2 of my top 5 Batman movies to date.)
    2. Spider-Man 2 (Easily the best Spider-Man film out there to date.)
    3. The Shining (Love horror movies. And without this movie, we wouldn't have the iconic "Here's Johnny!" quote that most people know even still today.)
    4. Alien/Aliens (Love horror movies. Great effects, too.)
    5. The Thing (Same reason as Alien)
    6. Silence of the Lambs (HANNIBAL LECTER. Do I even need to say more?)
    7. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (I love the Indiana Jones series. The story, the adventure, the effects, etc.)
    8. Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back ("Luke, I am your father.")
    9. Jaws (Great shark movie.)
    10. Jurassic Park (Great dinosaur movie.)

    Top 10 animated movies:

    1. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (Best Batman movie ever made, IMO.)
    2. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (There's nothing to hate about this movie. The action, the acting, the story, EVERYTHING! It's gold on a solid plate of gold.)
    3. Batman: Under the Red Hood (Love DC comics and tragic villains.)
    4. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (Love DC. Has a nice, dark story too.)
    5. Justice League: Doom (Love the Justice League cartoon and DC in general.)
    6. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (This is technically cheating, since it's actually a 2-part movie, but fuck it. Dark story, great animation, and unique voice acting.)
    7. The Iron Giant (Very underrated, IMO. The story is great, the animation is incredible, and that robot is awesome.)
    8. The Incredibles (Love Pixar movies.)
    9. Toy Story 2 (Love Pixar movies.)
    10. The Lion King (Nice story and animation.)

As you all can see, I'm a huge fan of horror and superheroes. And ties.

    1. Stranger than paradise (1984) - The only movie that truly defines existence.
    2. Singin' in the rain - Not only the best feel-good movie ever, but it also has relatable characters. Imagine that!
    3. Whiplash - The psychological thriller with the best payoff.
    4. American Psycho - The funniest social commentary that exists.
    5. Chinatown - The most intriguing movie ever.
    6. The Social Network - The best screenplay ever written.
    7. Rebel Without a Cause - The only "teen" movie that doesn't piss me off with some of the best characters put to screen.
    8. Casablanca - The best illustration of how love and sacrifice go together.
    9. Badlands (1973) - Unexplainably intriguing.
    10. The Neon Demon - The best looking movie with the best soundtrack. It's really fucked up though.
  • I'll do a top 5 because picking 10 is too hard
    1. Saw ( the most intense movie I have seen Jigsaw is an interesting villain before later movies ruined it, and Hello Zepp is the best horror theme hands down)
    2. 3:10 to Yuma (dark knight is great but this is my favorite Bale performance the story of this group just trying to get a criminal on a train is compelling and the final shootout is as good as Westerns get.)
    3. The Exorcist ( while Saw is horror it doesn't really go for scares this is the only horror movie to ever truly scare me and is still creepy to this day.)
    4. Pirates of the Carribean (Anchored by Depps best character this is the best summer movie telling a simple story about a pirate curse with all the action, adventure, and humor that entails.
    5. Up (if they had just slapped the end after the first 10 minutes I bet most people would have left the theater satisfied luckily the rest of the movie is fantastic too

Damn. That's hard. Here's 10 of my personal faves in no particular order. I'll go with ones that I don't think will be on a lot of people's lists. Sorry, Silence of the Lambs. I'll talk about you another day.

    1: Wolf Children
(This film takes a very strange premise and turns it into a very heartfelt story about motherhood and learning to accept your own path in life. This film's plot line is so good that I literally felt like I was in the movie and personally knew each of these characters. I completely forgot that I was just some asshole sitting in a recliner staring at a TV screen. What can I say? I love this film to death.

    2: Unbreakable
(Never thought I'd ever have a Shamylan film as one of my favorites, but this film is just so damn good. It's a very unique take on the superhero genre and really analyzes the aesthetics of superhero origin stories. Not to mention we get a surprisingly great performance by Bruce Willis and one of the greatest characters Samuel L. Jackson has every portrayed. It's well-made, suspenseful, and thought provoking. I love it. Really makes you wonder why M. Night sucked really hard in later years.)

3: Blue is the Warmest Color
(A compelling, dramatic, bittersweet, and heartbreaking love story tackling themes of sexuality and class. Both of the main characters are so life-like and interesting that this film's three hour run-time flies by really quickly. If I had any problem with the film, I would say that the sex scenes are a little too long and explicit for my taste, but if you can get past that, you'll love this film. I know I do.)

    4: The Iron Giant
(Like ET, but better. The Iron Giant is an amazing animated masterpiece that depicts a very real and believable relationship between a young boy and a giant robot from outer space. For a movie intended for children, it also tackles plenty of pretty heavy themes like death, paranoia, and individuality. It also has some brilliant animation and plenty of great side characters as well. It's growing more and more in popularity and for good reason.)

    5: Kill Bill
(This is one of my personal favorite Tarantino films. It's a lot of style with plenty of substance to match. It pays homage to different martial arts films, but still provides enough of its own original ideas in order to stand on its own. It's got a badass lead, a visually pleasing style, some great performances, and enough of that twisted dark humor that Tarantino is so fond of.)

    6: Perfect Blue
(Imagine if Alfred Hitchcock directed an animated film. You'd probably get something close to this. While the animation is a little iffy by today's standards, this film's narrative structure and sense of tension is fantastic makes it worth watching. You may or may not have to watch it more than once in order to understand it, but it still has plenty of rewatchibility regardless.)

    7: Manhunter
(Yeah. Bet you didn't know THIS was actually Hannibal Lector's first big screen appearance. While Silence of the Lambs is a better movie, Manhunter is still fucking incredible. It has a great 80's noir style that I always go crazy for, an interesting mystery, a series of very complex characters, and some pretty good performances. Particularly Brian Cox as Hannibal and Tom Noonan as the Tooth Fairy. It starts out a little slow, but once it gets going, it's impossible to look away.)

    8: Eyes Wide Shut
(One of Stanley Kubrick's most underrated films. The minute this film started, I was hooked. I love the dream-like visual style, I love the story, and I love the themes this movie tackles such as what it means to be married and whether or not the main characters are lying to themselves when they say they're happy with their marriage. Despite the fact that it has slow pacing, there's almost never a dull moment in this entire film. Something is always happening. Something always contributes to the plot later on. Every idea the film throws at you is interesting. Some might see it as artsy porn, but to me, it's just art.)

    9: Fight Club
(Kinda like Wolf Children, this movie is so compelling, that I actually felt like I was a part of it. Each character is interesting and the plot never has a dull moment. In fact, it's quite the opposite of dull. It's batshit insane at times.)

    10: Stand by Me
(A film where the kids act like actual kids. That's so rare. Stand by Me is a dramatic and bittersweet tale about adolescence and friendship and it is perfectly portrayed through its well-paced script, life-like characters, and the performances by Will Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell.)

  • I also struggle to narrow it down to 10, and I am leaving off some great films here, but I think I've got a list I can commit to:

Dragonheart - Heart it has, as hammy as it is. I always cry like a baby at the end. Always
Angels With Dirty Faces - Cagney fan and woo, that ending...one of the most powerful and chilling in cinema I can think of
Spirited Away - Can't have a list without a Miyazaki film
Princess Mononoke - Why not two? I've watched this one I don't know how many times
Alien - classic sci-fi horror, love HR Giger's art
Dark City - more dark sci-fi, go figure...the atmosphere and soundtrack is just superb
Rebel Without a Cause - Everyone should watch this. Just do it
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Also required viewing. If you for some reason didn't already have an appreciation for Nicholson, you will
Flight of the Navigator - this is a childhood favorite and my countless viewings guaranteed I'd grow up to be a scifi nerd
Life is Beautiful - Another brutal tearjerker, yet it is utterly inspiring and, well...beautiful

    Honourable mentions:
The Aviator (Favourite "true" story, Deadpool (Favourite recent superhero film), Hard Candy (Favourite thriller), Hot Fuzz (Anything Edgar Wright touches is amazing), The Incredibles (Favourite animated film), and Ravenous (Favourite horror movie that isn't also comedic).

  • Great list.

    • In regards to #2: Great movie. Have you seen Split? I personally really enjoyed it, and I'm hoping that it's a sign that Shamylan will go back to making good films.
    • #5: I really need to get around to watching that one, I've enjoyed a lot of his other work. BTW, how's the sequel? Should I watch both, or just the first?
    • #9: Have you read the book? It's pretty good actually (Palahniuk is one of my favourite authors) Also, in what way is Wolf children similar? If it's a dark comedy or a satire, then I'll have to check it out.

  • The Goonies: Greatest movie ever made, better than when I ate my weight at Godfathers Pizza, and that time Michael Jackson stopped at my house to use the bathroom.

The Royal Tenenbaums: The most beautiful melancholy I have ever seen, great cast, even better soundtrack.

The Godfather: For depth of character development alone, but it also just an amazing movie top to bottom.

Dr. Strangelove (or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb): Now thats my kind of silliness.

The Dark Knight: Best superhero movie ever.

Sneakers: This one dates me, but this just a great ensemble movie.

    Akira: TETSUO!!!!!! KANEDA!!!!! TETSUO!!!!!

1: Yes, I have seen Split and it's pretty good. It's my second favorite Shamylan film. The Visit was decent, but Split is the film that I think made him return to form.

2: I was referring to both because both films are all one big long movie to me. (It was intended to be, but Tarantino decided to split it into two movies because reasons.) So yeah, I'd recommend watching both. I guess if I had to choose, I would say the second film is slightly better.

3: I have not read the book. And I wasn't saying the two films were similar, I was simply saying it was another film that I was incredibly invested in the same way as I was Wolf Children, as in I felt like I was a part of the film's world and personally knew each of the characters and totally forgot that I was just sitting in a recliner staring at a TV screen. The two films really have nothing in common other than the fact that they're just films made by people.

  • Animated:

    1. Wreck-It Ralph (great main character)
    2. The Boy and the Beast (I can't help that I like bears)
    3. Aladdin (idk, it's just great? What's not to love?)
    4. The Road to El Dorado (Dreamworks' best movie, and so funny that words don't do it justice)
    5. Castle in the Sky (the art and the music are just top-notch)
    6. Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis (ditto)
    7. The Rescuers (great cast and somewhat gritty themes)
    8. Zootopia (for all the obvious and less obvious reasons--it deals with prejudice, it has a great cast, Shakira was there...)
    9. Ratatouille (idk why I think the following, but it's probably Pixar's best film)
    10. The Swan Princess (could've been better, but the animation - especially the special effects - is amazingly on par with Metropolis)

    Live:

    1. Jim Henson's Labyrinth (the atmosphere is the best)
    2. Casper (it's cute, but it also is a good watch for all ages)
    3. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (pretty funny and does mostly great adapting of the source material)
    4. The Force Awakens (diverse leading cast, plenty of original trilogy fan-service, it does both the thematic and comedy elements well)
    5. The Room (it's hilariously bad)
    6. Ghostbusters (the new one, for the same reasons as "the Force Awakens")
    7. The Golden Compass (same reasoning as Aladdin, although understandably divisive)
    8. A Series of Unfortunate Events (hilarious and creative adaptation of the books, and you should watch this before the Netflix adaptation since the show borrows or references some elements of the movie)
    9. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (if you're going to watch only one Harry Potter film, let it be this one)
    10. can't say, but this kind of film is hot
