Avatar : TLA Thread

Sure it has existed at one point but haven't seen one, So here this is, The sequal to the Drake & Josh thread after some comments were talking about it.

You know, The best cartoon on Nick. PERIOD, Like the cartoon version of drake and josh, Except it's themes were something that I am amazed were even on a kids network, Or technically a kids show.

Sorry, iCarly is actually pretty good as well, but not making that thread, Kinda cringe for that one, But not EVERYTHING needs a thread, Right? :/

  • That's what I'm talking about, hell yeah. It's not just the best cartoon from Nick, it's one of the best animated shows, and one of the best TV shows, of all time. I can't believe it took me 8 years after the series ended to finally watch it, but better late than never I say. The show was fantastic, the comics are just as good, and its sequel series, The Legend of Korea, while not as good, is still a great show in its own right.

Appreciating this show isn't just about nostalgia. This is one of the best cartoon series between 2000 and 2010. It's storytelling has blurred the lines between a "Kids show" and a mature drama. This scene is a great example of this.

  • As if there wasn't enough of a reason to love Iroh. One of the best scenes in the show, hands down, and the voice acting by both Mako (Iroh) and Dante Basco (Zuko) was just amazing. Another great example of that is when Katara confronts her mother's killer.

  • I thought it was very interesting how Katara had spared him but she still chose not to forgiven him. You don't usually see much of that in a typical revenge story.

  • It's stuff like that that makes Avatar such a mature and well written show. Even shows meant for adults and mature audiences wouldn't have done what Avatar did, they would have went down that typical revenge story route. By not killing him, she is actually the much stronger and better person, refusing to sink to his own levels and loose a part of herself by giving into her anger and grief.

  • am i the only one who prefers katara and zuko to katara and aang?

  • I'd like to take this moment to bow my head to the writers for creating a show so unique and intricate I actually found myself contemplating it long after watching it.

Azula is still one of the most tragic characters to have been developed in any show... ever.

  • Unfortunately, no you are not. I respect your opinion, but I just never understood the reasoning behind Zuko and Katara. I'm by no means a Katara x Aang shipper, but I did like how their relationship progressed and developed, it felt genuine and natural. I just don't get the whole Zuko x Katara thing, they hated each other for most of the series and are complete polar opposites. I can only think of one, possible moment between these two, and even that one I never got any sort of romantic vibes from.

  • Azula is amazing, she was cunning, intimidating (both with and without her bending), manipulative, and ruthless. And how the writers handled her, especially in Season 3, is just fantastic, she has so much depth as a character that her breakdown was one of the most entertaining, but also heartbreaking, moments of the finale. Plus, she was played by Grey DeLisle, perfectly I might add.

  • You're definitely not. I personally ship it and to this day I cannot stand Aang and Katara together. However it's not a total loss as I also like Zuko and Mai.

  • Definitely by far one of the best animated tv-shows in history. It's so much more than a "kid's show". I do love and value The Legend of Korra even more tho.

  • HOW DARE YOU?! Don't you, or anyone, EVER, mention or show a picture of this man's face when it comes to something Avatar related.

  • For those of you interested, a Youtube channel called Blind Wave are currently reacting to Avatar. As of today, they just watched Season 3 Episode 11 (Day of Black Sun Part 2).

  • I can't wait to see their reaction to the end of the final season and The Legend of Korra! Really epic!

  • The best cartoon for the 90's babies yes.

Sokka was funny as hell. Not even Bolin could top that comedy.

  • The best cartoon for the 90's

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Avatar: The Legend of Aang in some regions) is an American animated television series that aired for three seasons (referred to as "books" in each episode's title card) on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008.

  • Me too, but I also hope they react to the comics, which act as a great continuation of the show. The writer, Gene Yang, does a terrific job when it comes to storytelling and nailing the characters (excluding all the "Sweetie" bullshit from Aang and Katara).

I can't decide which episode I'm more hyped to see them react to, The Southern Raiders (my favorite of the series and one of the darkest, if not the darkest, episode) or Ember Island Players (best recap episode of any TV show ever, and the funniest episode of Avatar by far).

It is sad that I never got to properly watch the show as a kid since I didn't have Nickelodeon on my television nor that I was aware of it.

My hope is that, one day, Netflix will somehow buy the rights to it. Then, not only will both Avatar and Korra be up on Netflix, but we can get a 3rd Avatar series, but this time from a network that actually gives a crap about its shows and its creators. Netflix is already doing Voltron, and that has several former Avatar/Korra writers, directors, and animators working on it.

  • Meddling is understating it. Cutting the budget, odd air times, removing it from broadcast to web only, removing it from web to broadcast only, etc. They really hated the show.

  • I'm all for another series but I'm pretty sure the creators don't wanna don't want to do another one. They're doing the Korra comic about her and Asami in the spirit world and then they're done.

  • And yet, despite all that, Korra was still the best show on Nickelodeon and one of the best shows that was on TV at the time it aired. If Nick had treated it like it treats SpongeBob, Korra would have been just as successful, maybe even more successful, than Avatar.

I never really shipped anyone when I first watched ATLA, but on rewatching I can see why Katara and Zuko are so popular.

    Still don't ship it tho.

It's a classic trope for ships in general - bad guy turned good and the laced-up girl who can occasionally lash out. I think contextually, in story, it's a little weird but in fan-fiction and stuff, I could see where it could work.

And that right there is the problem, sure in fan fiction you can do that, but in the actual show, no way. As you said, it's a trope, the typical "girl falls for the bad boy" cliche, and that's always been one of my biggest reasons why I hated this ship. We saw how that worked out once in the show already with Jet, and look how that ended. But even disregarding that, I still don't like this trope. Sure I've seen people say it was the "hero gets the girl" cliche with Aang, but, for starters, I don't see that trope played out nearly as much as the bad boy one. Two, is Zuko really a bad boy anymore at the end of the series? And three, if we didn't get any development between Aang and Katara, then they would have a point, but as it stood, I don't see it playing into that typical cliche.
