A Series of Unfortunate Events - Netflix Series
UPDATE: I finally caught up with season 2 last night. Anyone else there too? I know it's over a week late but what did everyone think? Remember to use the spoiler filter as always.
If you are interested in TT discussions with happy endings, those discussions are threading elsewhere.
But really, who am I kidding? What are your thoughts on the Netflix series?
I just finished it last night and personally enjoyed it. I thought Neil Patrick Harris and Patrick Warburton carried it really well with it's theatrical style along with a nice comical feel the whole way through. I did read the fist four books a long time ago and now I want to catch up with them again before season 2. Those are just a couple of my opinions and I'm happy to discuss more.
Make sure to use the SPOILER WARNING filter if you're discussing plot points and stuff like that.

I thought the sitcom community was meta, but you can't get more meta than this opening
Can't argue there. Nice intro though, cool how it changes throughout the season and the song in general in pretty catchy.
Oh yeah.. Was a big fan of these books when they first came out. I liked the movie (Jim Carrey had the perfect amount of crazy and comical, I think.), but it wasn't handled well with the 3 books in one, the plot of the first book being stretched and melded with the other books, and complete revelations being way too early.
I've already finished the first 3 episodes of this series and it. is. gooood. I love the meta-ness of the show (yes, that theme song is great), and how the writing and look of things have that Snicket flair. Warburton plays a good narrator, and while at first I thought he appeared way too much, I quite like it whenever he appears on screen.
So far, the show seems very faithful to the books; From the "a word which here means --" to "I suggest you turn this off now, or be wrought with interminable despair", is so sweet.
And I really love all the references that they're making already. From the notes to Beatrice at the beginning of each "book", to the Very Faithful Dialogue taken from the books, to the name drops and allusions to future revelations of the series... so good.
I thought I wasn't going to like NPH playing Count Olaf, but by the end of the first episode, he had me sold. He has a large menacing personality sometimes, but he can still be a funny character...
though, one small gripe I have with this is the CGI. The claw in the very beginning was out of place and so was Sunny later on in the cage. Luckily, it's not featured for too long so it's bearable.
I absolutely love this new Netflix take on Series of Unfortunate Events. That book series was hugely influential on me as a young writer so seeing such a well-done adaptation makes me so so happy. The tone, casting, and production design is all fantastic.

Keep watching! The meta jokes are fantastic haha!
I had been hyping this show quite a bit with the trailers so maybe I was already used to Warburton to some extent, but yeah he is really good and very different from Jude Law.
I did think it sounded strange when they first announced NPH playing Count Olaf (like Jesse Eisenberg playing Lex Luthor) but yeah it ended up working really well.
I know what you mean about the CGI. A friend of mine prefers the incredibly deadly viper in the movie compared to the show. But still, it's not a deal breaker.
I agree, it's different from the grim and bleak feeling in the movie (not that I found that bad, just a bit traumatic to my younger self). It took me a bit of time getting used to, but I really like it now and will set an alarm for when season 2's out.
I am intending to read the books before season 2. Read the first four of them years ago but I will have to refresh it all. Awesome to hear you're a writer though and I can see you're Telltale staff. I'm guessing you write for some of the games?
My favorite childhood book series being made into a film is pretty awesome.
Now if only they didn't completely wreck the maze runner with its two awful movies...
I haven't read the books, but I loved everything about the series! The tone, atmosphere, characters, Story. I didn't expect it to be THIS good.
Bruh, this guy wrote for the later episodes of MC:SM - my personal favorite game from TellTale thus far.
It's weird for me- I've never read the books, but I enjoyed the film, and now Netflix is making a series that I wanted to hate at first, but am now mostly okay with.
I was a massive, massive fan of the books, and while I thought the series was fine, I was disappointed.
I don't really think they managed to capture the sense of actual fear and foreboding that was occasionally present? I know that the books had comedic elements thrown in, but the series felt more like a comedy with tragic undertones than the other way around. Olaf is not remotely scary, he's just a joke.
My two cents.
Oh he did too! He wrote for TWD and Batman too, that's awesome!
I read the books when I was like 7 in my school and I thought they were real XD Like I guess it was the way they were written I thought everything had happened and Lemony was a real dude, but then after the Jim Carey Movie I'm like...oh it's not.
I liked the Jim Carey movie but there was some things I didn't like.
But now this series came along and I FREAKING LOVED IT!
All of the actors did an amazing job with there characters (In my opinion NPH was a Better Count Olaf than JC) and it was faithful to the books. The sets were gorgeous and even though humour wasn't that big of a thing in the book I think it fitted quite well here.
But the tiniest problem I have with the show is that they swap some of Violet and Klaus's lines so Violet will say a Klaus like from the book which kinda annoyed me.
And another tiny problem is that for the majority of season 1 Violet is carrying Sunny, Where Klaus held her the most in the books
I shouldn't be annoyed because obviously there not going to be able to replicate it entirely
I could write a 100 paged book about how much I love this show and can't wait for the next season but I'm gonna end right here
That's interesting about the swaps they did. I read the first four books when I was 11-12 but can't remember those points. I am hoping to read them all before the next season comes out so I'll try and take note.
But yeah I agree, I think it's been very well received
A solid 7/10 just like the books are honestly, at least the ones I read.
I know it's been a while, but I just found these cool videos that show off many, many references that are found in the show, both of real people and events related to the plot of the stories. I love the books and the tv series, but there are a few things that reference future events In the series even I missed. (though that's probably because it's been a really long time since I've read them.)
It's really nice that you're keeping the discussion alive, thanks for sharing I'll check those videos out sometime!
Does anyone know when season 2 is coming out?
We have no idea. I'm betting either end of this year or beginning of next year...

It sucks how i waited so long for season 1 to come and I finished it in a week
Okay! Bringing this back because we finally have confirmation and a date for Season 2!

(Not sure how many books we're getting this time, but I think books 5-8 would be fine.)
thank you so much for info!
More isn't always better. Sometimes it's much worse.
I don't care if this thread isn't a Very Frequented Discussion, I'm still gonna spread the news! Count Omar returns very soon!
Thanks for the news
This looks awesome! Loved the first season and now we're so close. Thanks so much for keeping this thread alive too Hopefully there's some more buzz after this season airs.
Drum roll please
Excited for Series 2! Until then catching up on How I Met Your Mother is sating my Neil Patrick Harris cynicism.
Anyone else caught up on the second season? Personally, I'm still undecided on whether I liked it more than the first but they've both been fantastic either way. Perhaps this season wasn't quite hyped as much but I love where it's all going and will be jumping right back on the bandwagon whenever it returns.
On another note, and without going into too much detail, did anyone else spot that Bob Ross cameo?
I saw the first episode. Not exactly my cup of tea. But then again I was warned it is a depressing story.
Just finished season two and I would say it’s more of the same, i will say that I did enjoyed count Olaf in this season more than season one and Lucy punch is fantastic as Esmé, especially since I hated that character in the books
And yes I noticed the bob Ross cameo which makes it harder for me to pinpoint what year this show takes place.
She is pretty fun to hate. I told myself I would finish reading the books after 4 but never actually got around to it.
Yeah the time frame is pretty odd, I've always thought that same thing about Gotham. Then again I only saw the first season so I'm not sure if that's ever explained.
Sooo we're probably getting Season 3 later this year. Both Patrick Breen (Larry-Your-Waiter) and Partick Warburton (Lemony Snicket) have mentioned that there's a high chance that Netflix is aiming for November... that's great!
heh. just noticed that I never really participated in this thread or even said a peep about what I thought of the new season. Guess I should rectify that. Find my thoughts on the subreddit then...
