I've been meaning to watch the original for so long! I have to before the ScarJo movie comes out...

  • I watched the original movies way before I was old enough to get them, really need to go back to them at some point. More recently I did watch all of Stand Alone Complex for the first time last year top 5 anime I've watched easy. Watched arise as well and it's fine I think people are a little overboard with the complaints about it, it was weird hearing Major's SAC voice actress voice a different character in arise though

It seem's the movie has changed the background for Kusanagi. Batou live action actor looks pretty cool.

  • Cool plz let us know your thoughts when you get to watch it!

  • Yeah the Arise situation with the voices was a bit distracting. Good flawed film though.

  • Oh have they now? Should we get the Torches ready? "White washing" aside What other changes are we be aware of. to this point?

  • "They stole your life" "You were created as a weapon" It's becoming more movie cliche

  • GitS was definitely a formative movie for me like for many others, along with the other classics like Akira and Ninja Scroll, so I'll go ahead and spill some thoughts in light of the remake:

First of all, yes, I'm hanging onto some skepticism about the remake, and not just because of Scarlett Johannson-- she definitely qualifies for the role given her Black Widow. Though I kinda wish they'd cast someone like Rinko Kikuchi aka Mako from Pacific Rim instead, for example, but whatev, I'm not up in arms about it.

Anyway, the casting doesn't make me as nervous as the fact that despite being a simple story at the heart, it is still rather dense and depressing/dystopic, so I have to wonder if and how the writing will make it accessible for your average moviegoer. However, it's super encouraging and honestly breathtaking to see scenes in the trailer taken frame-for-frame from the anime. And whether the movie succeeds or flops at the box office, hopefully it'll encourage folks to go back and watch/rewatch the original for some good ol' history

I also keep in mind that these kinds of flashy blockbusters are geared for worldwide consumption rather than just American/Western audiences/tastes

I think it's interesting that Ghost got this treatment before Akira. Years ago I might have expected the reverse

But good lord, if they ever do a Ninja Scroll movie...

  • Thx for your input. I must admit, I've never seen Akira or Ninja Scroll. Obviously I've heard of Akira but the variety of reviews from friends has kept me away. As for Ninja Scroll, the name alone has me curious....

  • Yup! Just a word of caution: Ninja Scroll ticks just about every box of WTF and debauchery-- part of why it was formative for me was because I asked myself, "You can actually ANIMATE and publish shit like this?" This was before I fully grasped the concept of hentai, granted. But I found Ninja Scroll much, much easier to digest than Akira, so I enjoy the former a bit better-- because if you can enjoy the weirdness, I think it's a damn fine movie, and beautifully animated.

Geez, now I'm going to have to look around for my copy to watch :)

  • One of my favorite IPs, with excellent movies and television shows; the movie looks really good too - even if posting a majority American cast in Tokyo seems like splitting the baby (IE: fund a Japanese movie or set it completely in America). But then again, Scarlett Johansonn is an American in Japan so, hey, whatever. I hope it is better than Scarlett Johansson pretending to be an American in other Asian countries (cough LUCY cough)

  • My hopes aren't high on the live action GiTS movie. Anime doesn't do well after being processed through Hollywood. That said, I'm a huge fan of the series. I owned all the movies and tv series.

  • Everyone talks about how La La Land whitewashed the main characters and yet when this film casts a white woman as an asian character because she's marketable no one seems to be losing their crap over it. Interesting.

Besides that, it looks like it'll be a good movie. I probably won't go see it, but I'm expecting for it to do well.

Isn't La La Land an original movie? You can't whitewash something that wasn't written previously with characters of different skin colors. Like Ghost In The Shell. And for that matter, I don't think Motoko was "whitewashed". She didn't look like she had a prosthetic body modeled after asians as far as I could tell.

  • Yeah the OG does'nt blatantly say thats what happened (Spoilers) But I believe the sequels and show do. And besides GITS has always felt like The Bionic Woman : The next Generation or Bionic Woman meets Universal Soldier. That said the OG implies the possiblity of it not being a choice. Section 9 members are said to be OWNED by Section 9. If you quit S9 they keep everything but your Ghost. And that would mean death as most ppl couldn't afford a Shell without Government help. The short version: GITS helped redefine this troupe, and now the Live action movie seems to miss the point with this Trailer. We'll see.

  • Can't see how anyone has a problem with a 'white wash' If we go by this theory the no one should be asian in the upcoming 'Fullmetal Alchemist' Live Action, seeing as it's primarily set in germany...

It's just cast people from the region it's being created. As long as the movie is well acted and just good overall I don't care if they match the nationality of the character or not

  • Yes! That was my point! Thank you!!! The internet doesn't seem to care, however.

I was under the impression that she was. I haven't read the original mangas or seen the anime, so I wouldn't know for sure, but people seem to be uptight since it's coming from Kodansha and they had a huge opportunity to cast an asian woman when they didn't.

So we have a franchise which focuses on the relationship between the mind and the body, piggybacking on the rise of the internet and Merleau-Ponty, exploring individuality and society by applying the concept of simulacra to the development of the ego, and subsequently questioning the extent to which the ego is fundamentally formed by the society which surrounds it...

But no, we have to bitch about race.

  • edited March 2017

Well, it is hard to argue with the notion that Scarlett was only picked because of star power and then there's the whole controversary about the filmmakers trying to make Scarlett look more Asian which just strikes me as incredibly odd.

I didn't really care too much about the original Ghost in the Shell when I watched it. Don't know why, just didn't like it.
