A Telltale musical?

(I decided to make a new thread instead of posting in the Telltale suggestion thread since this is more of a gameplay concept than an actual license idea.)

I was listening to the Hamilton soundtrack (I just learned about the musical a few days ago, I'm hooked!) when I had a, maybe good, probably terrible, horrible very disastrous idea. What if Telltale made a musical game? As in, like Hamilton, the story is told in song form. When the player makes a choice, the dialogue would rhyme and flow with the tune of the song.

Would this be insanely difficult to get right (nigh impossible with telltales signature lag spikes). Yes, absolutely. Still, this is something that, to my knowledge has never been done before in gaming and if done right imo would absolutely make up for ANF. (I love musicals, though I know a lot of people can't stand them.)

What do you all think? Terrible idea or could be interesting?

  • The first two seasons of Sam & Max actually had musical numbers in them, though mostly in cut-scenes.

The pause for the player to pick a choice would probably wreck a full on opera game. And the voice actors might want to be paid extra. :)

  • Telltale presents repo the genetic opera

I feel like I played a musical game before but im not sure

  • If done right, that sounds like an AWESOME idea

That would be an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how that would work. QQQQQ - E for dance breaks? Up, Down, Left, Right for singing prompts? Dialogue prompts that would dictate how the song sounds would be cool, but having a 10-second dialogue timer in between those gaps would really kill the flow of the song. Not sure. Intrigued, but unsure.

I'll just leave this here for perusing.

EDIT: Oops. I clicked post even before I wrote things. I just pasted the video link first but forgot the other stuff.

  • The song wouldn't have to stop for the choice. The song could either go into an instrumental session while the player makes a choice, or other characters could take the spotlight as the choice is being made, like how characters will ramble on as the timer runs out in current Telltale games.

As for the QTEs, they don't have to be tied into the singing, they just be part of the action scenes like other recent TT games.

I've actually pictured the game (comic) universe being in a musical a lot. It'd be funny as shit and Lee would have that amazing Bass II voice.

  • Lol I'd imagine that'd go something like this (The Last of Us spoilers, skip to 2:35)

  • "I Wanna Be a Man!" starring Gabriel Gabe Garcia.
