After Playing TftB, what next?

So, having never played a Telltale game before (but hearing incredible things about them), I played Tales from the Borderlands and was absolutely blown away. I can't stop thinking about the story and the characters! It's driving me insane! haha

That said, I figured I really wanted to check out another Telltale game, and wanted some recommendations. I have heard that admittedly TftB may be one of Telltale's best games so I suppose I have spoiled myself a bit with one of the best, but I'm hoping to see if there is something equally captivating. (Obviously, no spoilers please!)

For a lead in, The Wolf Among Us is on sale for PS4 on the PS Store for $7.49, and had heard a lot of prestige surrounding that game as well. Do you think that's a good next step for me? It seems like I don't need to be invested in any sort of franchise, because I'm not necessarily invested in The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones.

Thanks!

  • Glad to hear you enjoyed Tales From the Borderlands, it's definitely my favorite Telltale game.

I would recommend The Walking Dead, as it's considered Telltale's flagship series. At the very least, you need to play Season 1 of it, and if you enjoy that, you can continue. The Wolf Among Us is definitely good, many here praise it and call that Telltale's best game, but I find it a bit overrated. The story is great and it has a captivating mystery, so if that interests you, you'll find some enjoyment in it.

If you have PS Plus, Game of Thrones is free for this month. However, that series does spoil a few moments from the show, so if you're looking out for spoilers, then you may want to stay away. But since you said you're not really invested in GOT, if you don't care about the spoilers, then it's worth checking out.

Definitely go for the wolf among us and then I would play the walking dead season 1. I also thought Batman was good but so far Guardians of the Galaxy is turning out to be a masterpiece imo.

  • Yeah TWD S 1 and 2...TWAU...Batman was really good...dunno about Guardians of the Galaxy as I have heard both good and bad about it....

Well, I personally think all of the games you mentioned are great. But to help you, TWAU is about fables and you play Bigby who is the big bad wolf (the guy who is shown on the cover of the game). He's a detective and over the game you can also decide if his bad side still shows up many times, although he tries to become a better person, or if he stays nice, I guess. I don't want to spoiler you about the story, so I'm just gonna stop there. But for me It's one of Telltale's best games, so I definitely recommend it.

There are three seasons of the The Walking Dead Telltale Series and many say that the first or second season is the best, while the third season has left many fans dissapointed, me kinda too, but it's still nice somehow and you should decide that to yourself if you like it or not (there are still many fans who like It), but buying the first season is absolutely a must-have in my opinion. It's also my favorite game of Telltale, although I didn't even watch a single epsiode of the TV series before I started playing the game. But I can tell you, you will get many heartbreaks in this game.

Game of thrones is also an awesome game (I didn't watch the TV series here too), you seriously feel how your choices matter, only one little choice can shake the whole story and the characters are just awesomely written. For me the dialogue options were sometimes really hard to choose because you really must be careful what you say to the other characters or else things can dramatically change (just like I said, even little choices matter). The story is also interesting and very exciting.

If you are a fan of Batman, Telltale made a game about him too. I'm just saying: for someone who isn't really a fan of Batman, It's not so bad and actually exciting. But I don't know the opinions of others here so I can't really tell if you would actually like it too or not. But like I said, If you are a fan you will probably like it. I personally like the other games I mentioned above more, but I'm not a big fan of Batman, so...

They also are working on a Guardians of the Galaxy game right now, which surprised me in a positive way. Some of the TWD fans who were dissapointed of S3 were jealous that the game has the things that they missed in TWD A New Frontier. There are only two episodes right now, but I'm pretty excited for the next one.

There also is a game about Minecraft, which is hated by many people that didn't even play it. I think it's only hated because of the original Minecraft and the style, but the story and the characters are awesome. So even if It's a game for kids, It's also fun for adults and there is a next season coming up on the 11th July. (I'm totally going to buy It, btw)

In the end, every single one of them is worth to buy, you just have to decide which one sounds good to you and make an opinion for yourself. (But I would recommend TWD S1 the most...)

You should play The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead (S1 and S2), ANF (S3) left many disappointed and will probably leave you disappointed too.

Wow! Thanks everybody for the awesome feedback! I'm so stoked I finally played a Telltale game and it feels like I just opened up a world of games I haven't gotten around to trying yet.

I think I will play The Wolf Among Us first, considering $7.49 seems like a steal (I bought Tales for $5 on sale and that was well worth it, even if it DID go free a few months after haha). After playing TWAU, depending on how that goes I'll keep an eye on TWD stuff, and even though I've never been into that franchise, I think from what I'm hearing it's worth a shot seeing as it is the flagship.

I'll also probably add GoT to my PS+ library just to have it waiting if I want to play it. (thanks Metallica! I totally forgot about that!) and yeah, not too worried about watching the show.

And well...I'll just keep my fingers crossed for a Season 2 of Tales too one day. =)

    Thanks again!

  • Most people generally tend to see Tales from the Borderlands, Wolf Among Us, and Walking Dead Season 1 as the holy trinity of modern/choice based Telltale games.

If you want to check out some of their older, non choice based stuff that was made for a more niche audience before Walking Dead, I also recommend checking out Poker Night 1/2 and Sam and Max: The Devil's Playhouse.

  • And I will add, outside of Borderlands, Guardians of the Galaxy is the other franchise that interests me the most, so maybe even despite hot and cold impressions initially, I do feel like if the subject matter is interesting, that can go a long way for one's enjoyment.

  • Good to know! Thanks Blind Sniper! I'm really excited to try the other 2 games of the trinity haha.

  • I personally think none of their other games are nearly as good as Tales but Wolf is still pretty good.

  • I would say Thw Wolf Among Us, but if you don't like swearing, a great alternative is Batman (which took over Wolf for me)

You should try A New Frontier next it's so guud had me in tears dont worry about playing the other gaymes first they don't matter also theyre kinda shit.

EDIT: Being serious you should definitely try TWAU next. It's not as lighthearted at Tales but it has a very good story and characters. If you want more like Tales you could always try Guardians of the Galaxy. It's not as good as Tales but it's still a lighthearted game. (Just don't play A New Frontier it's terrible.)

  • Season 1was better then a new frontier but a new frontier is only good in the eyes of “newcomers” who didn’t play the first two. I also can’t tell if this is a troll comment or not.

Even if you're not interested in The Walking Dead (You haven't read comics or haven't watched the show) it doesn't matter, the game has no connection to either of these (a bit to the comics since it's in the same universe and a few characters from there pop up in the game); even if you don't know anything about The Walking Dead it doesn't matter since the game takes place right at the start of the apocalypse.

Definitely recommend the game, I believe Episode 1 is free anyway so play it and see if you're digging it.

  • So far I only know 1 newcomer.

A whole season for 1 person.
