What makes a sequel great?
In my opinion, one thing is for sure. Newcomers must be completely lost.

The Ezio trilogy did just that. Making it one of the most memorable sequels made
The Uncharted sequels kind of worked as not continuing a story from a previous game even if there are a lot of callbacks. But they wouldn't be enjoyable if you didn't start with the first game.
All the best sequels don't try to be the original and they don't try to beat the original. They do their own thing.
A sequel is great when it is necessary, not just created for money.
Which is why some sequels are more successful than others.
...By, ehm, making the prequel bad...?
What makes it great? A sensible story instead of a useless sequel
this is quite possibly the worst fucking mindset to go into making a sequel with. a good sequel needs to be something that does justice to the original story and lets players from the last game be experienced, but also makes the game accessible and fun for newcomers while also gripping them into the story. if your sequel is the opposite mindset, then you are making a bad sequel. what makes a good sequel is a game that's perfect for long time fans and can be appreciated by newcomers, that's a good sequel. pandora tomorrow, silent hill 2, majora's mask, etc. these games are all aware that while you should absolutely work hard on giving the fans a sequel they want, you should NEVER, EVER, alienate newcomers.
to add onto this, i guess a basic answer would be that a sequel has to be good enough to have newer players desperately want to go back to the first game just so they can appreciate the second more.
I think it's a good mindset. The sequel is shit when it's made for both the newcomers and players from the last game. Play the first fucking game and if you don't like throw away the sequel and piss off. Let the last game players get what they want, it's a sequel. It's a follow-up to the first game.
did you even read my comment? i literally said they should make it for both newcomers and long time players. i said a good sequel has to be something long time players from the last entry can enjoy and something a newcomer can get into without even needing to play the original. you're acting like my POV was saying completely throw long time players out the window which is not the case. regardless though, i don't quite understand where your whole "fuck newcomers" attitude is coming from but i just wanna say in my opinion that ideal when making a sequel is just as terrible as if they were to completely pander to newcomers and fuck the fans from the previous entry over.
And I said it's shit when it's made for both newcomers and long time players. What's the deal?
the deal is that my urge to say snarky and passive aggressive things towards you about that POV is so strong right now but i don't wanna get banned for "cyberbullying" and also i'm not a gigantic prick so i won't just openly attack you for it.
But hey, that's just an opinion. A GAME OPINION! so dont be a dick about opinions yo..
if you ever reference game theory towards me again i will send a fucking army of squirrels with rocket launchers and rabies towards your location you sick fuck.
but yea, just opinions at the end of the day, can't argue with that.
Found this from watchmojo, which is quite insightful. To any and all future moviegoers.
