August 21st American Total Solar Eclipse

So if you didn't know already, there's a total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017, visible in totality within a band across the entire contiguous United States. So that's pretty awesome. Last time that happened was presumably before any of us were alive, on June 8, 1918 eclipse, and there hasn't been a total solar eclipse visible from the mainland United States since the February 26, 1979 eclipse (which I assume most people here didn't see).
I'm going on a long road trip to see it, which is going to be totally worth it. Got any plans? There's gonna be so many people around.

Eclipses are really cool to see, i saw one in 1999 when it came across the UK. From where i was it reached 98% coverage so i wasn't able to see the cool stuff like the corona but it was still an amazing thing to witness.
A couple of interesting things thing i remember is that all the birds went silent as they thought it was night time and there where weird crescent shaped shadows caused by the half blocked sunlight going through the trees.
The time and date website has some pretty good charts showing what it will look like in your location if you put in your town/city name https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/solar/2017-august-21
Hopefully the weather will be good for everyone to see it, i know this is obvious but remember don't look at the sun without approved eclipse glasses
I saw a solar eclipse 2 years ago and was so tempted to look at it we had to use this thing though to reflect it onto a sheet. It was shit, I bet it would have been better if I could actually look at it without being blinded though
I am off that day...where I live we have almost 90%...so we are going to have a party and listen to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon...which fun fact...was called Eclipse when they were previewing it during concerts.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP...Do not look directly into the sun...even if you have those glasses places have been selling or have the nice expensive UV blocking sunglasses...you are just fucking around with trouble. You can still see it without looking directly. It is not worth risking your sight. Record it with your Iphones or androids. If you are in the path of the 100% eclipse...you are in higher danger of damage. Just be careful and also if you plan on partying...drink responsibly...and wear shirts....sunburns are more intense during an eclipse.
This is all I’ve been reading about lately lucky to be seeing it in North America I’ve never seen one before. I haven’t read much on locations according to some google research I might be able to partially see it from my location.
I have fucking Jury Duty that day...
My family is dragging me to see it, unfortunately. Not interested.
I do hope everyone else enjoys it, though.
ouch.
That absolutely sucks.
Maybe you can ask to go outside to at least see the partial eclipse? Is that allowed?
Funny you mentioned Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. One of achievements for Guardians of The Galaxy Episode 3 is The Dark Side of the Moon (obviously after the song). Maybe Telltale planned it knowing it would release the day after the eclipse.
I will look at the Eclipse without glasses for scientific purposes, will confirm if I am blinded or not when I have the time.
That's great! Thank you for doing this, we are all eternally thankful for your sacrifice.
Neil deGrasse Tyson got me super excited for this event. I didn't even know about it until I heard his line in Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow back in July.
"Don't miss the big solar eclipse on August 21st, brought to you by Futurama!"
https://futuramaworldsoftomorrow.gamepedia.com/File:NDT_-_Don't_miss_the.wav
That caused me to Google about it and I saw that there really was going to be a big solar eclipse on August 21st.
Oh, and Mr. Tyson's following line of dialog is probably the real reason I'm excited for the eclipse.
"A solar eclipse is when a big dragon eats the sun, then barfs it back out."

I was around for the 1979 eclipse. We traveled to see it, and when we got there, it turned out to be too cloudy to see it. Though it did get dark, so I know it happened. Basically, if you're traveling to see this one, try to pick a spot with as few clouds as possible if you can. The whole thing lasts a couple of hours, but the totality only lasts a couple of minutes.
It happens on my birthday! Level up, noobs.
I'm nowhere near it, but I've seen 1. Down south around 99ish-00ish.
(massively edited this as I mixed up a partial in the early 90's with a total in late 90's)
But, if I make it to 60, there will be one right over my city!
Well if anyone wasn’t able to find glasses like me because they were sold out I found a nice livestream to watch.
I keep looking at different streams to find a good one but most of them are playing random videos for now, i did find a weird "flat earth" one where they think they are going to prove the earth is flat and are wondering why they can't see the moon right now even thought it's currently a new moon .
I live in a 100% zone!
Seriously? Why do people still think the world is flat in 2017?
I don't really want to give them extra views but their theories are so crazy i am linking to them as i am laughing at their stupidity.
They are also wondering why the moon doesn't appear as a big black ball in the sky when it's not white.
I'm jealous, i hope you enjoy it
still waiting on that infinite tsukuyomi...
Damn you Americans and the location of your country, first the aliens always come knocking to your door and now the eclipse is here for you to enjoy!
Hope y'all have a great time!
Yeah and we have a super volcano in the middle of our country that if it ever erupted...we would probably all die....so lucky!
Total bullshit...we know that the sun is getting swallowed by a giant space dragon and then shat back out....oh and the world is square.
Think this way: you got to see an erupting volcano before death. I'm calling that a win-win.
I wonder how many people are going to look directly at it and damage their eyesight.
My dumb self will look directly at it and get blinded.
I don't even have special glasses to see it so I can't even enjoy the sight of it.
National Geographic currently have a pretty good stream if people want to see one.
Wow that totality was really cool to look at my location on gets about 60% covered.
Amazing
Wow that look even cooler then the ones the livestreams are showing.
......wow 0.0
I was in a 98% zone.
It was way cooler than I thought it was gonna be. As soon as it reached Totality, it was unlike anything I had ever seen and I'm incredibly grateful that I just so happened to exist at the same time this occurred. It may be visible in my area again when I'm 27. After that, I'll be a senior citizen according to a few sites.
I get fuck all in my state
It was amazing...got 90%....and everything looked so surreal....just like when the sun first rises in the early fall...golden hues and deep reds...color saturation was so skewed...truly was a great time.
Well... that was a thing that happened.
