Why does no game capture the tone and feeling of Victorian London?

Victorian London has always been a fascinating time period. A serial-killer Jack the Ripper was also born. Child labour and industrial revolution is a major theme. The poor districts of Whitechapel fill with brothels and poor people on the streeets while the rich borough of Westminster feature St. James park and Buckingham Palace.

In the history of video games, the Victorian era is rarely explored, much less historically accurate London. There is so much oppurtunity, but no major develoepers have grabbed it, at least not yet.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate, captured the feeling of the Victorian era terribly if anything. It was a great try, but not good enough.

When you hear of the Victorian era, what comes to your mind. I suppose dark and grimy streets of Whitechapel. The infamous asylum of Lambeth. Or the affluent borough of The Strand or Westminster?
I always preferred it to be dark streets and shiny interiors.

It's like the futuristic cyberpunk setting, the thought of a open world game like this would frighten most companies away. But the Victorian era is different, it's nowhere as difficult to do. Syndicate was just not what I expected. Everything feels lighthearted, which Ubisoft utterly failed at capturing the 'feel' of the Victorian London.

It is beeming with opportunities, why does no developer take it. As it is, I'm excited for Cyberpunk 2077.

This shows even a futuristic cyberpunk open world game can be done, so why not the Victorian era London?

  • There's a couple Sherlock Holmes games that might fit your criteria. I've never played them though, so I have no idea if they're any good or not.

  • The Sherlock Holmes games does not exactly fit the criteria, it once again fails to capture the gothic 'feeling' of the Victorian era.

Not to mention this time period is perfect for a romance story, which has barely been explored!

Look at this image, that's exactly the tone I'm looking for. Shame it hasn't happened yet.

  • there are a ton of games that actually do in one way or another but okay

  • Because disease and poverty isn't sexy?

  • There are some old Sherlock Holmes games from the 90s which came close. They're called The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes.

  • Have you tried the Dishonored games?

  • Fallen London. That's a free browser game that's as victorian london as it gets. You read stories and make choices, raise your stats which determine the outcomes of choices in a very fleshed out universe.

There's also a game on steam that's based in the same universe except it's more game-y, with actual gameplay in between the choices and no action limits like in Fallen London.

  • Vampyr is going to be set in London, I think.

I thought Sherlock Holmes was good and it was grimy maybe your perception is just more grimy then reality. I would rather live in victorian london over, say, 80s new york (watching taxi driver right now XD)

  • Well, people died early due to the pollution though.

  • I wasn't alive during that time period to really know the tone and feeling of victorian london, but I'd assume games that take place in Victorian London kinda do?
