What to Expect next year from Telltale Games?

I have been wondering what telltale would announce next projects for 2018 at the game awards 2017.

I jest. The third game will be a game some people will like but they will be over shadowed by the scream fans of a game's sequel that got passed over.

  • Well, Telltale have already announced Wolf Among Us Season 2 (yay!) and Walking Dead Season 4, so that is like half of their output next year. I don't wager that Batman and Minecraft will get sequels as quick this time around, and Game of Thrones Season 2/Super Show are further off into 2019 and onward.

I would predict that maybe we get two new IPs, although what those could be is anyone's guess.

Well, we have Wolf and Dead sequels in 2018, so you aren't entirely wrong! :p

  • Actually Johro is entirely right.

  • I'll add that my jokes are far less mean-spirited and far more crying-inside. I have not played the new Batman episode, but the previous game felt like a step in the right direction. A drunk step mind you. Going the right direction, but with some weird stuff going on at the same time. Adding a little more element of an adventure game while making failing near impossible. Some weirdness going on there. I'll take it. Bring on more detectiveness.

  • Without too many spoilers, Episode 1 of Season 2 has the Riddler as the main villain so they have some cool puzzles/riddles, but that might be limited more so to the first episode only. Still, though, it's more of a step in the right direction.

In the long run, though, I strongly agree with you that Telltale would heavily benefit from experimentation of a larger scale.

  • Not a second season of Game of Thrones, that's for sure.

    Or Tales from the Borderlands.

  • I'd love a season of Firefly... There are so many things I want to know. For example, who was Book before he became a shepherd? Why was Inara taking drugs? Anything with Wash. I miss Wash. What happens to everyone after Serenity? I mean, besides that some of them die.

  • I'm hoping that they just take their time on TWD and The Wolf Among Us.

  • Wolf Among Us Season 2 comes out the later half of next year so at least we can be sure Telltale is taking their time on that if nothing else.

  • Im kinda worried about Season 2 now, there was an interview posted here on the forums not long ago with Job talking about wolf for a little bit, and there seems to be almost no real story planned at all yet, and we might not even get another 80s Neon Noir type game apparently.

Although I will say I think itll still be in the 80s, I just really hope its just set after Season 1 still in the 80s and keeping the same style, I know they keep saying they want it to be "new comer" friendly and all that shit, but if its like Batman S2 where theres plenty of S1 callbacks that if you played S1 youd 100% understand but if didnt youd still easily be able to follow, I hope thats what theyll do for the whole "new comer" problem, and dont pull a ANF

They've been using the "new comer" line a lot, even for sequels like Batman and Minecraft that still rely pretty heavily on Season 1 connections, so I would not worry too much unless they also do a worse job in regards to characterization. I think that ANF might just be a bit of a black sheep in regards to how Telltale approaches sequels to be honest.

Reading Job's interview about Wolf Season 2 from beforehand, it's pretty evident the Season 1 story was meant to be standalone, so I can see why they are (potentially) focusing on different time periods. Playing Season 1, I found the appeal of the game to come more from the atmosphere and character relationships than I did the murder mystery story, so I won't be entirely upset if they do something different (even though I do agree the 80's neon noir aesthetic of Season 1 is sublime). As long as they still manage to focus on compelling character relationships, I think they can still pull off a good story even if they ditch the 80's New York setting.

Bigby's moral ambiguity was what largely defined Season 1 for me, so I honestly think that Telltale can get pretty experimental with Season 2 and still tell a good story evocative of what made people become so attached to Season 1.

  • Its more of a worry that itll just pull an ANF with the whole "Oh heres some weird price of shit that isnt really Season 3 and we changed the art style aswell cuz why not"

For me, if they do something like "Oh its a prequel so S1 wont have any impact" or "oh its now set in the 90s" or something Id be beyond disappointed. What we do know is that Season 2 will be a mystery, and I really hope they just keep the whole 80s feel with the neon, simply removing the style of the 80s Neon Noir would honestly already make season 2 no where close and would never even have a chance to be as good as the first.

If their trend towards having a gameplay continues, relying less heavily to QTE cutscenes and choose from four dialogue options in each episode, I might start to pre-order their games again.

I have read they have been implementing more gameplay to their Minecraft and Batman series lately. I think it will really make their titles more popular. I'm already considering of buying season 2 of Batman due it let you play more in the first episode, having even some light puzzles.
