Interesting choice. Most people, if they were to go with a Metallica album, would usually say either Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. Death, while also one of my favorites from the band and regarded by many as a return to form, is usually not considered the best Metallica album, especially since the production of it is less than stellar and how phenomenal their 80's material was.

  • Well, after Load and Reload shit, they release even far worse St.Anger, so when they dropped Death Magnetic, it was kind of rejuvenating.

Yeah, some people may argue that album was ruined by producer Rick Rubin and his obsession with loudness war but I think that without him Metallica wouldn't put out that good album. He resurrected so many artists(Red Hot Chilli Papers,Johnny Cash,System of a Down and more) and bands by his guidance.

Not only that, it also includes one of my favorite songs by them like Suicide&Redemption, All Nightmare Long, Day that Never Comes...

I am interested in your ranking of all Metallica albums, can you?

    Why certainly:

    1. Master of Puppets: Their magnum opus, and also their last album with bassist Cliff Burton. Tracks like Battery and the title track are easily in my Top 10 Metallica songs, and tracks like Disposable Heroes, Damage Inc., and Orion (RIP Cliff) are very underrated.
    2. Ride The Lightning: Kirk and Cliff really start contributing here and we see Metallica come into form with this album. Songs like Fight Fire With Fire and Creeping Death are the traditional thrash songs you'd expect, but songs like Fade to Black and The Call of Ktulu show Metallica's more melodic side, that it's not all about playing fast like KEA was.
    3. Death Magnetic: For many of the same reasons you listed, it was rejuvenating to hear the old Metallica back (even though I don't hate Load/Reload/St. Anger as much as others do). From the opening heartbeat of That Was Just Your Life, I knew it was going to be good. The production is bad, but despite that, it's No. 3 on my list, which shows the overall quality of the songs.
    4. ...And Justice For All: Contains my favorite track from the band (One) and is the first album with Jason Newsted (although you wouldn't be able to tell since you can't hear him at all). Great songs that really show Metallica's maturity as not only a band, but as songwriters, and easily the best drumming that we have ever heard from Lars Ulrich.
    5. Hardwired...To Self Destruct: Disc One is marvelous, all great tracks from the straight up thrash opener in Hardwired to the traditional slow but gets progressively heavier Halo On Fire that we expect from Metallica. Disc Two is where it falters a bit, especially with one of my least favorite tracks from the band (Am I Savage?). What saves it is easily Spit Out The Bone, easily one of my Top 5 favorite songs.
    6. Kill em' All: I prefer the original title, Metal Up Your Ass. You can still hear the Dave Mustaine influence in the songs, which is fine since I also love Megadeth, but Metallica were still pretty new at this, and you can tell. Some great songs like 4 Horsemen and Whiplash, and while it's influence is legendary, I just like other albums more.
    7. Metallica (The Black Album): Production is fantastic on this record, as was the case with all of their Bob Rock era albums, but this is where the change in direction started. Good tracks like Sandman (overplayed, but still good), Holier Than Thou, and Don't Tread on Me, but it's more simplistic and commercial sound brings it down.
    8. St. Anger: While low on the list, I still don't hate it, despite the drums and lack of solos. It came at a difficult time for the band, when they were venting all of their frustrations and James went to rehab. It's got some meaningful songs like the title track and Some Kind of Monster, but at the same time, doesn't sound very inspired and took a lot of risks that didn't pay off.
9.Load: If they cut about half of the songs on this album out entirely, this would be a pretty great record. A bigger change than The Black Album, but a lot of these songs actually sound really good, it just gets dragged down because we expected different (or more of the same) from Metallica. Until It Sleeps, Hero Of The Day, Bleeding Me are all terrific songs, but the album gets incredibly repetitive in the second half and ruins it.
    9. Reload: An album of rejected and unfinished Load songs, oh boy. Fuel is the only great track on the album. both Memory and Unforgiven II are good at best, and Devil's Dance was done so much better on S&M. The rest are just plain forgettable.

  • Man, you sure do like good music :D Thanks for your walkthrough.

I wouldn't say I hate St.Anger, more like don't enjoy listening to it because they lost identity with trying garage metal but credits for this mistake goes to Bob Rock.

Let's just hope Hardwire isn't their last album because it wasn't as good as I had imagined.

Btw did you see their performance with Lady Gaga? It was surprisingly stunning. Would you like them to work with her in the future because I sure would like that.

The infamous green version of Ride The Lightning.

    1. The whole Family Tree series, by Radical Face (The Roots, The Branches, The Leaves and the four volumes of The Bastards). The story of the Northcotes is great.
    2. Atlas: Year One, by Sleeping At Last (Space vol 1, Space, vol. 2, Light, Darkness, Oceans and Land). I've never cried so much before.
    3. This Empty Northern Hemisphere, by Gregory Alan Isakov
    4. Our Endless Numbered Days, by Iron and Wine
    5. Every. Single. Ismael Serrano. Song. No album needed, all of his songs are gold (but if I had to choose one I'd say Todo Empieza y Todo Acaba en Ti is great)
  • So much old stuff. Nice!

  • when Ride the Lightning was first released in 1984, there was a misprint of the cover, and it was green instead of blue.

they are very rare, but i think you can still get them, i'm not sure honestly.

  • It was a really good performance, despite the technical issues surrounding James and his microphone (for which he was rightly pissed off about, but kudos to him for playing in spite of it). Lady Gaga has always been one of the few pop artists I have respect for. I don't listen to her music religiously, but there's no denying the talent she has as not only a performer, but as a singer who has done work with a lot of different genres, she's very versatile. Considering some of Metallica's other team ups (Lou Reed, Lang Lang), working with Lady Gaga turned out to be one of their best ones. I wouldn't mind seeing a collaboration, but James has pretty much shut the door on that. However, Anthrax expressed interest in working with her on an album, maybe something will happen with that.
