Cancelled video games that looked promising.

edited September 2017 in General Chat

I was just thinking about this recently, and these were the first few that came to mind, so I'm curious what other games looked great but were cancelled (and the reasoning behind it, if that information is available).

    This gem.

  • Oh man, I so wanted to get introduced to the Silent Hill franchise just like I did with Resident Evil but this was easily one of the worst Konami fails. Konami ruined the Silent Hill franchise and now they are destroying Metal Gear with that Left 4 Dead/The Last of Us rip-off, Metal Gear Survive.

  • Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. I am so pissed off that we never got this. Rumor has it that they're doing a Gotham by Gaslight animated film though, so I guess there's some consolation in that regard.

Oh yeah, I remember seeing this. It could have been good, but I don't know if I would have preferred this over getting the Arkham games. I just doubt that they would have had two separate Batman games going on at the same time.

It isn't a rumour about the animated movie either. It was confirmed not too long after Batman & Harley came out as the sneak peek was released as part of the bonus features. I think they may have took it down from YouTube, but someone posted the sneak peek. It looked good, actually gave me a bit of hope for getting a good DC animated movie again, since I've found the last few to be very mediocre.

  • Just look at the cape physics. SOO MUCH BETTER than Bat's cape from the Arkham series. This game had so much potential. Why cancel this but make a Batman VR?

  • The Arkham cape psychics took a long time to get right from what I understand, and I think they were good. This has more movement, sure, but it's unrefined. Perhaps it is because this was prototype footage, so maybe the finished game would have looked much better.

I agree about not needing a Batman VR game, but what do you know, a Justice League VR game is coming in December.

  • Silent Hills was too good to exist.

  • VR is so fucking overrated. Those are nothing but cash grabs with ZERO REPLAYABILITY. I swear if they make an Avengers VR, I'm gonna protest so hard.

Supermassive Games is now making a game that is connected to Until Dawn but it's exclusive to VR. What a bunch of money eaters.

  • It really pisses me off that all these Star Wars games will likely never happen because of so much stuff being declared non canon. Even the Force Unleashed 3. The worst part is that it was completely unecessary to declare them non canon. I'd have loved a Maul origin story, especially after watching the Clone Wars animated series.

  • Crash Landed was going to be a reboot to the Crash Bandicoot series.
It was being developed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and would have been later be ported to Wii.
A DS version was also planned, and you can find a pitch of it on YouTube somewhere. (I'm too lazy to find it for you)

Unfortunately it was cancelled after 2 years of development, in 2010.

One of the major things that made this game different from the other Crash games is the inventive weapons crafting system where you would find items and combine them to make different weapons.

  • As a Marvel fan this one really bums me out... the cancelled THQ's Avengers First Person game, which would have seen you play as Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, War Machine, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Captain Marvel in a well done adaption of the Secret Invasion storyline in time for the first Avengers movie.

Instead we ended up with a crappy Kinect tie-in fighting game which was awful. Marvel has really sucked in the last few years with games, especially with their micro transaction heavy mobile 'games'. Thnakfully Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy game is fun and the upcoming PS4 Spider-Man game looks awesome. A shame how crap the new Marvel vs Capcom game is going to be but at least it might finally mean the death of that franchise for good and a solid solo Marvel fighting game worthy of Injustice 2 might replace it.

  • Let's not forget the awfulness of The Amazing Spider-Man games. While the first one was just ok, the second one was TERRIBLE, which is ironic because it's an adaptation of the worst Spider-Man movie (IMO). It's was too much over-the-shoulder focus, the combat was boring, mediocre story, downgraded graphics, the swinging was too automatic and the open world is empty.

So glad Activision gave up the Spider-Man license to Sony Computer Entertainment.

  • I'd have far preferred it to stay with Activision. At least we PC and Xbox users get something the play. Sony only releases for their own consoles.

  • Yeah, the only thing I hate about the upcoming Spider-Man game is that it's a PS4 exclusive which sucks for Spider-Man fans who don't own a PS4 and this is coming from a PS4 owner.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Movie and Game) almost ruined Spider-Man's mojo.

  • Half-Life 2: Episode 3.

After the way Half Life 2 episode 2 ended i was really looking forward to what was due to happen next and hopefully see the series come to a epic conclusion but in the end it never happened :(

  • We got some good games from Activision for Spidey but most of them were comic based. Spider-Man 2, Ultimate Spider-Man, Web of Shadows and Shattered Dimensions are probably my favorites.

Not really cancelled but we never got this version, would still pay good money to play this.

  • 15 Years in development and ends up like shit. How pathetic.

You can also see the golden era of gaming in this one, good humor, laughing at tropes in other games and media by taking them to extreme (one guy saves the world, women as reward and all that other macho stuff). Would never be made in 2017. Never played the new one, just saw the dumb poop and fart jokes shitty gameplay and saved my money on better games.

  • P.T.

Agent by Rockstar, but apparently these fuckers never let it died and it could be coming soon.

  • The Man, the Legend, the Champion of Light.

And don't tell me that Alan Wake 2 was American Nightmare. It's not the same. The premise was cool, and was a nice continuation.. but after a while the game just dragged on. The concepts introduced in this demo seemed pretty interesting. (The reality-altering pages (used in AN) + new inclusions like TV shows becoming reality.. Ooh.
  • I was so hyped for Star Wars 1313. It looked to be everything I wanted in a Star Wars game since KOTOR.

Also Scalebound was going to be an Xbox One system seller for me as I'm a fan of Platinum Games but I'm so glad I didn't bite the bullet early on that and go ahead and purchase a console.

  • I cri evrytiem. This had so much potential.

  • They pretty much deleted all their work and progress every 2 or 3 years in that time.

    • Silent Hills
    • Half Life 2 Episode 3
    • Prey 2
    • Mega Man Legends 3
    • Phantom Dust (the reboot/remake)

Not exactly cancelled kinda, but Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The only things shared between it and XV are most of the characters, though they had their roles heavily/completely changed, were pretty much cut out entirely from the game itself or had their appearance changed (like Regis and Prompto).

  • This one still hurts so much :(
The easter egg in Quantum Break was more heartbreaking rather than funny imo.

Patrice confirmed it’s still in development. Although it would have been out by now if not for the Ubisoft show.

Frankly, the game looks terrible. The concept is going to cause lots of controversy as well.

Don’t get me wrong. I like Patrice’s work, but I just don’t see this selling well, or even fun at all.

It can’t expect to be as successful as AC, even though it’s by the same creator imo. Spiritual successors are rarely good.

I discovered one that looked promising. Its working title was, LMNO. There's not much info about it, but it seemed to be about the player looking after a female alien and protecting her from the government(?) who's after her. It was going to be an emotional, first-person action game and it even had Steven Spielberg working on it.

  • This reminds me of that 2016 film called Morgan.
