Star Trek: Discovery Premiers Tonight! An Trek Fans on the Forums?

I'm excited. It's been a long time since we had a Trek show. Maybe getting CBS All-Access if this Firestick doesn't work. Any other Trek fans here watching tonight?

I will not pay any money for it....fuck CBS.

  • It doesn't matter to me. Considering that I don't pay for cable nor have Netflix or Hulu (nothing there has interested me), this would be my first paid subscription service. I'm a simple guy and don't need much in terms of entertainment services. I spend most of my free time on SketchUp, MuseScore, my piano, and drums anyways, so paying for Trek is fine for me.

My little soap box rant: But honestly, it is the future. As people leave cable/dish and move to streaming entertainment, companies will pull their content from sites like Netflix to make their own streaming services. I'm quite surprised people are socked by this and giving CBS grief over it. Companies will get their money one way or another. The only way to really make companies pay attention is to abandon those companies' content period and hit them in the wallet. Rant over

  • Well I do pay for cable and internet..I pay for hulu and Netflix....Netflix btw who paid the costs for the production of the new Trek....in every other country...it is either on broadcast or on Netflix....but if you live in the US...where Trek was created..and where over half of Netflix's customers are...we have to pay for another service that has nothing I am interested in.

    Fuck them.

  • I like Star Trek in general, and I already subscribe to CBS All Access. Despite that, I'm planning to skip this series. Everything I've seen in the previews makes this not look like a real Star Trek show, but some other thing they've stuck some Star Trek concepts into just to get people to watch and pay for it. Star Trek is supposed to have a lot more light-hearted moments while they're exploring the galaxy, not some extended stress mission.

Is it new Star Wars spin-off? ;)

Star Trek series I can say I definitely liked are. Star Trek Voyager and Star Trek Enterprise, and the reboot stuff.

  • Diplomacy failed the federation. They didn't understand the Klingon culture at all. You have Vulcan (implied she is human who grew on their culture) on a ship telling you right course of action and captain overruled her for no good reason.

I like how ship AI actually is allowed to make decisions if a situation calls it. Makes one wonder why captain isn't AI, since the ship's actual captain definitely was shown most incompetent in Star Trek canon.

Star Trek is supposed to be about progressive society, yet they give life sentence to a human Vulcan. You would think the society would be more open to try and help her, even if she would be kicked out of Starfleet.

  • She did disobey orders, attacked the captain to take command, and it seems like it's implied she intentionally attacked the original Torchbearer. Plus, a 23rd century life sentence may not be what we think it is with our 21st century perspective. The teaser for episode 3 (the real first episode as some are calling it) made that transport ship seem really comfortable compared to modern day prison transports.

As for the captain, she was someone who saw war and didn't want to go back. I can understand her wanting to wait for the admiral and talk it out. Plus, she had what looked like a science vessel that she stated was old. I'm sure that crew was not made for combat. Think of it like the Battle of Wolf 359 in some instance.

Speaking of which, I liked that the Starfleet/Federation way failed miserably. It's not perfect and not everyone responds to diplomacy. You don't see the Starfleet way not work very often in Trek (excuding DS9). It's going to be interesting to see how pre-Captain Kirk era Starfleet handles this situation (side note: I wonder if we will see some similarities between Kirk and Burnham's Klingon hate arc with Kirk losing his son and Burnham losing her family and humanity to the Klingons).

I like the premiere. It was like a movie to set everything up. I want to watch it again to really analyse it. Episode 3 is really going to begin the Discovery story. As some mentioned elsewhere online, the first two episodes were more like the finale to Star Trek: Shenzhou and episode three is the start to Star Trek: Discovery. I'm really looking to see what they will do off the bat, especially since it looks like we will see the Shenzhou and Klingon ship again. After episode 3, I'll get a better idea of what this show will be like and a better judgement of how I will feel about it.

  • I think with this series, they are showing a more realistic perspective of exploration. It's not all fun and games. The Shenzhou was all fun and games, and we saw what happens when that meets opposition. I think Discovery will have the crew sort of earn that fun exploration atmosphere after they go through some tough times. If you still haven't seen it yet, the first two episodes are like a movie to establish backstory and episode 3 will kick off what Discovery will really feel like. You could wait and start with episode 3 or start from the first two. Give it a shot. Maybe wait until the hype dies a little bit to have a true perspective. I will say this, the trailers (like every Star Trek trailer) are misleading.

  • Well I liked it...but they lied..this is a reboot and does not fit in with the Original series.

    Things wrong with it...

    1. The arrowhead badge was not the Starfleet symbol till after Kirk's 5 year mission.
    2. They stole Mass Effect's communication...holograms were never a thing in early trek
    3. Those federation ships look nothing like Original Trek ships.
    4. Those Klingons
    5. Klingon ships do not look like Klingon vessels
    6. Cloaking devices were not a thing until the original Trek episode Balance of Terror...and then it was the Romulans that created the tech
    7. All 24 houses answered the call at the same time...so Klingon space is either very small or the writers decided that travel should be instantaneous.
    8. Starfleet Policy during the 4 Years war was to have ships crewed by one species to promote efficiency
  • Indeed, if it does turn out to be a good show after all, I can always go back and watch it later. For now, I'm still skipping it.

To get my laughs in for now....
