Is Telltale Games Getting Better?

edited September 2017 in General Chat

Like the title says: is Telltale Games getting better? Now, in my opinion, since The Walking Dead - Season 3: A New Frontier, I've felt like Telltale's video games are doing a bit better. Such as Guardians, Minecraft: Story Mode - Season 2, and Batman - Season 2: The Enemy Within. I'll start off with why I think these games are pretty good thus far:
1. Guardians of the Galaxy. I really enjoyed the movie, and I love these difficult decisions. Like the Eternity Forge in Episode 3. It's basically save the galaxy or your friends' love-ones? And I find Star-Lord seeing his memories of his mom in a certain period in his life interesting. And I loved how Thanos just dies in the first episode--really unexpected. Though I gotta admit: the characters can fall weak at times, but there are some emotional moments. Now let's move on to the next one.
2. Minecraft: Story Mode - Season 2. Now, I gotta admit--the have improved a lot since Season 1. I love the characters more, the music/soundtrack, and I love the concept of The Admin (a.k.a. "Romeo"), how Jesse and the gang are going up against the sort of "god" of their world. I find it more interesting than fighting a giant wither, jealous guy, killer, computer, and two power-hungry individuals. He's also deadly and funny--a great combo. I also adore the fighting and crafting in the game. Really good game-play. And I love how there is sort of "boss battles." (Fighting Petra/Jack and the three-headed ghast). And that Vos plot-twist--wow--blew my mind, but was kind of obvious--from him just eating pork-chops--that's all--for years. And when swimming out of the Sea Temple, he doesn't wear a hemlet. And another thing: Axel and Olivia are just gone again (aside from being in "Hero in Residence" for a few minutes), like episodes 5 (they barely appeared), episode 6 (and 7--they both didn't appear), and they barely said anything in "A Journey's End?". I've just kinda lost interest in their characters, but I hope Telltale can in the last two episodes left. (...Unless they do Episodes 6-8 again. :P ) Now onto Batman - Season 2.
3. Batman - Season 2: The Enemy Within. So, like Story Mode Season 2, they've so far have made it so much better than Season 1. From your relationships with other characters changing as you play through, some tough choices, and I was actually kinda sad from Lucius' death. And John is still amazingly funny (maybe even funnier than in Episode 4 of Season 1). And the combat is still really good. My only issue so far (as a YouTuber named "Haedox" pointed out), why would we need to care if one of the agent's are left deaf or the other ones dead? We barely get to know them before this choice. But other than that, I am happy with this season and cannot wait to play Episode 2, "The Pact," on October 3rd, 2017.
I just wanna say: I love all 3 of these games. Also: what do you guys think of Telltale's current video games so far?

I definitely lost my interest in Telltale games after the disaster of A New Frontier and I promised myself I wouldn't buy any of their future games anymore except TWD Season 4 and TWAU Season 2.

However, I really enjoy watching Batman Season 2 on youtube. I tried to watch Guardians and MCSM 2 but I lost my interest on them since their second episodes released.

  • I definitely think they are improving. Ever since the new engine things got a little weird like Batman was good the first 3 eps but the others could need work. TWD ANF (which I enjoyed) wasn’t enjoyed by most people. Telltale then learned and I feel they have been improving since guardians. For me guardians was thier redemption. Great music choice, even the most minor of things make a difference, cliffhangers that leave you wanting more. Then came Batman season 2 which the first episode was amazing and showed what telltale is capable of if they actually try. Then the latest episode of mcsm s2 was just beautiful it was darker than the other ones but that’s what made it good. I hope this continues down the line. The only thing I doubt is having more 2 hour episodes I think they are only going to do 2 hours for premier episodes.

Minecraft definitely gets better by the end of the second episode. By better, I mean A LOT better. It's on par with Batman for me right now. With Tales and Wolf leading.

  • It seems like they’re heading in the right direction again based on both Guardians and Batman. I only hope that they will stay on this track under their new CEO.

  • Yeah but it still pisses me off that they now started Season 2 instead of retiring for a few years.

  • Why?

  • They already made 8 episodes for one season, they deserved a break after that. They are releasing way too many games per year.

  • It does seem that they are improving, but they there is still room for improvement( animations, gameplay innovation).

  • Episoe one of season 2 relased 10 months after season one episode 8

  • That's what I saying. Too early.

While I see your point, I have to disagree with it. I think the additional episodes played a significant part in helping the development team hit their stride for season 2 and find a good fit for the series. Continuing sooner rather than later has done no harm that I can see and seems to have only been to the series' benefit. The series has been nothing but improving, in my opinion.

I also see no reason to delay development for years when there's interest both from potential buyers and developers to continue. Furthermore, a lot can happen in even just a couple of years so, well, there's an expression in my country that epitomizes my sentiment best: "Better to forge when the steel is hot."

  • While I'd tend to agree, I wouldn't hold that against the game itself - rather management and stuff. It seems kind of, eh, I don't know, petty (maybe that's a little harsh), to hold it against the game itself, especially if it's good. But you know, Minecraft isn't for everyone.

Did you watch Episode 3 of Guardians on YouTube?

  • I didn't because I've lost my interest since Episode 2. I've nothing to judge about it though.

  • I thought Episode 3 was pretty good. I suppose it don't really matter since it's on YouTube you can watch at any time.

Hopefully Season 4 of TWD and Season 2 of TWAU follow the improvements these games made :).

  • The Telltale engine leaves ALOT to be desired. It's killing them.

  • I didn't even finish watching Episode 2, I stopped after the first half of the episode.

I don't have good expectations for TWD Season 4 but it would be insane if it turns out to be good but that doesn't mean I will forgive Telltale for what they did to A New Frontier.
