What if Telltale made a prequel to THE LAST OF US?

With the LAST OF US 2 being released sometime next year, I have had this on my mind for a while, so hear me out.

We all know that after the death of Joel's daughter, that he went down hill morally speaking really fast. Yet, in one of the final scenes in the game he says to Ellie:

"I struggled for a long time with surviving, no matter what, you keep finding something to fight for."

Now earlier he mentioned in that he had thought about, or had attempted suicide, though I have to admit I don't remember exactly what period of the game he mentions this.

But what if the quoted line was not just about his struggle against suicidal tendencies, but also with what he was having to do, especially while working as a scavenger - or perhaps more appropriately, as a marauder, in order to survive?

Since Telltale loves making role playing games with which the outcome in part hinges largely on the player's decisions in the game, what if TT did a back story on this period of Joel's life, where we would be confronted with such decisions, and would to decide how we would react, and thus get to choose how depraved Joel became as a survivor?

What do you think?

( For ANY MODERATOR who reads this thread, please do NOT move it to any thread related to the upcoming Last Of Us 2 game.

I want this thread to stand by itself, because it addresses an idea that has bee on my mind, and I would like to read the opinions of others about it.

So of you please leave it as an independent thread, I thank you.)

  • I mean they definitely have a lot of wiggle room for a prequel

  • They have 20 years to fill in.

  • BUUUUUUT it would be a PS4 exclusive and telltales never really done exclusives. They have stated that they like having their games available on all platforms.

    .

  • That is a stupid idea.

  • Yeah, it would have to be an exclusive and Telltale would lose money. And Telltale hates to lose money.

  • Even if Naughty Dog gave Telltale the rights for them to create a prequel, I think Telltale's take on The Last of Us would be far too similar to their The Walking Dead series for it to work.

  • Not exactly.
If it would be a prequel, we wouldn't have the surrogate father/daughter relationship.

The plot would most likely revolve around Joel being recruited into the Hunters' faction, doing all sorts of horrible things, and then trying to get away from them and live a different life. This is all before he meets Ellie, so the tone would be much different.

  • I would like that but the thing is like everyone else is saying it would be a PS4 exclusive. I’m an Xbox guy and only have played the last of us on a friends console.

  • If they did this I would fucking kill myself, The Last of Us is the only good thing left dont let them ruin that too

  • Telltale wouldnt be able to do it. There is way too much content to be covered in a prequel:

    • Joel's broken watch
    • Anna
    • Marlene and her past relationship with Anna
    • The fireflies
    • How ellie became immune
    • Why tommy joined the fireflies
    • How ellie got her scar

There are many many more small details and we all know TTG likes to scrape shit, so they would scrape more than half that list despite it all being important. They'd come up short and the game wouldnt be satisfying.

Leave the prequel to Naughty Dog since it's already in the works.

  • Am I the only one here who have never played The Last of Us?
Should I play it? A lot of people say it is good.
Plus. I live in Argentina and this game is very popular here because the genius behind the soundtrack is from here xD

  • Should I play it? A lot of people say it is good.

It's good enough to win over 240 Game of the Year awards. So, yes, you should. Available for $20 on the PSN store.

    Joel's broken watch

It deserves an entire two episodes all to itself

  • It does

but with telltale theyll split one in half and call it two

  • Well how Telltale are handling The Walking Dead at the moment, really do not want them to touch The Last of Us!

  • Please don't give them ideas. TLoU 2 is one of the few games I can still get excited for. I have no wish to see how they would butcher it.

  • And said episodes won't even show the watch being broken. Hell, the whole season won't show it. But don't worry, Season 2 will reveal it in a lazy 3 minute flashback.
Whether or not someone will even care depends if the episodes even load, especially if you buy it from the Telltale Store.

A prequel would be really cool as there is a lot about Joel & Ellie's past that is unanswered, but I'd have to say that I wouldn't want anyone else other than Naughty Dog to make it...
"Now, I know that's not what you want to hear right now, but..."
Some things though, ND confirmed that they wouldn't elaborate on, for example, the favor that Bill owes Joel. (Source)

Now earlier he mentioned in that he had thought about, or had attempted suicide, though I have to admit I don't remember exactly what period of the game he mentions this.

I think I know what your talking about. Normally I'd double-check on YouTube, but I can't, so I've probably messed up the lines a bit:
Ellie comments on a couple that committed suicide in the Hotel in Pittsburgh.
Ellie: "Looks like they took the easy way out, huh?"
Joel: "Trust me, it ain't easy. Better than having a Hunter or a Clicker do it for them."

Joel's involvement with the Hunters is very ambiguous... But that's The Last Of Us for you, isn't it?

  • Are you being sarcastic?

I don't think Telltale Games would be tasked to do a prequel for that series. They would have quite a job convince they can keep up the standard that the fanbase who haven't heard of Telltale Games would approve. Just see that mess that their Minecraft series got from gamers who didn't know or really like Telltale Games. It was assumed that it would play similarly to Minecraft but with a story.

  • it'd probably be weird and not good

  • I love TLOU and Telltale games any additional content makes me happy as long as doesn't affect Naughty Dog or telltale games

I love TWD telltale game and naughty dog tlou shooter

As long as keep making the game within their franchises too I don't mind

So I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I want to see it happen just to laugh at the people that don't trust Telltale to do it justice, and freak out about Telltale putting their dirty hands in the cookie jar, so to speak

  • I don't understand why Naughty Dog can't just make this prequel game after they finish developing TLOU 2. I would absolutely kill to see their take on the role playing genre.

I don't recall Minecraft fans "making a mess" over the Telltale gameplay; I recall most of the uproar came from Telltale fans thinking that Minecraft didn't deserve a Telltale game. I think the general consensus was that Minecraft fans liked it but fans of mature Telltale games did not.
