When will Telltale ditch mobile?

Seriously, when? They are holding us back in terms of graphics and how big hubs can be. Mobile just can’t handle it.

Graphics weren't because of mobile. The Telltale engine had a laundry list of limitations. Now that they've announced that they are looking outward from the inhouse engine, you're probably going to get your wish.

I've seen larger hubs work on mobile by having characters change direction and such. Arkham Blackgate, for instance, had a full Batcave mapped out. This one, I believe, was just a design decision.

Edit: Maybe it wasn't Blackgate. It was a Batman game anyway.

  • I would actually argue that both of those limitations are not as imposed because of mobile as you would expect. Prior to Walking Dead, Telltale was a smaller indie studio, so their graphics were never the same as a triple A retail game. Even after their success, they've focused more on constantly releasing content with incremental upgrades as opposed to sitting down and hashing out some major upgrades to their tech.

As for hubs being small, those are deliberately self-imposed limitations they put on themselves to make their games feel more cinematic. If you don't believe me, compare a pre-TWD Telltale game to a post-TWD Telltale game (with the exception of Jurassic Park and maybe Back to the Future depending on how picky you want to get). Old Telltale games had more traditionally point-and-click gameplay with lots of hubs, puzzles, etc, but Telltale re-prioritized their gameplay to focus on minimalism because of how they interpreted the success of Walking Dead Season 1.

The second and third seasons were on iOS, yes. Not the first for some reason.
Both were ported WELL after their release though. It was a tiny tiny hub, but it worked.

Just the second Season was "well" after - the first episode of Season 3 was actually an early release on the iOS app store that was like two weeks ahead of the PC premiere. But, the hubs for 302 were too big for iOS devices at the time (keep in mind this was back in, like, 2010), so the rest of the series did not get ported over.

(I imagine they could do so now, but it's probably not their first priority)

  • Ah. Yeah, that sounds right. I didn't have an iPod Touch 'til 2013, so I didn't really pay much attention.

  • Telltale will never ditch mobile completely. Too many people have mobiles, and Telltale doesn't want to miss out on the market. There may be some point where they try having the same basic storyline on both mobile and PC/consoles, but with better graphics and animations on the machines that can handle them, but that's just speculation.

  • AHEM

I'm kinda on an iPhone 4s right now, so... yeah. NO DITCHING MOBILE ON MY WATCH.

  • If you're on Iphone 4s it's just a matter of time till you can't play telltale games anylonger.
