Unity Engine 2018 Hidef update...
With the chance that Telltale is going over to the Unity Engine...I thought it would be interesting to look at one of the latest build video's that had been released.
Unity has gotten a lot of flak because of the open nature of it....horrible devs basically use the engine to make quick and lame games to sell on Steam. The bad games tend to hurt the image of the engine.
Lately however...Unity has turned into a potent platform....LiS:BtS runs on it...but the nice thing is how it scales on many different platforms...this could be a big help for Telltale in the mobile market.
Here is the engine with the hi def in use.
So I do not know about you guys...but it is time to take the ole Telltale engine out back and shoot it.

But Life Is Strange BTS looks like one of telltales pre-WD games. If a Telltale game on unity looked like what's in that video, then yea I'd approve. But LiS...
Looks like my dog barfed on my monitor
Trolls need not apply. And if you were being serious...I feel bad for you.
Oh I was being serious, but I just stretched the truth as a joke.
I seriously think Life Is Strange looks worse then current telltale games
Well I think you are wrong...the eyes are so creepy in current telltale games..there is more expression in facial animations in LiS....but the fact is that Unity will allow Telltale artists who do amazing work.. to really shine.
excuse me
Yes there is if i remember correctly Life is Strange before the Storm got the facial animations good this time,in the original game it was really bad.
You can't really compare the engines that way(by two games). Both studios have made artistic decisions that strayed from realism. Textures, palettes, designs... Some of these choices do not necessarily depend on the engine. Physics, lighting, bones, polygons... Others do.
Unless, you've developed with both, it's hard to judge where it's headed. We aren't in the office, eaves dropping on a developer... "Ugh, wish I could adjust this or that". Don't kid yourselves. Don't expect Hellblade character graphics if they switch engines. That artistic style probably isn't going anywhere soon.
I don't think it'll change that much anyways
Maybe ...maybe not....Unity does offer them more freedom to do things that the Telltale engine has issues with. I think their artists probably will do some interesting things with the new engine.
Well I did not expect them to do that level of detail...but Unity does offer them the ability to do more and better...plus the scalability of the graphics will help with the mobile ports of the games. Plus you never know...it is nice to have the horsepower under the hood with the Unity engine.
If I'm being completely honest, I still wouldn't consider the facial animation in BtS to be that good. Sure, there's a few scenes sprinkled throughout where you have characters properly emoting and reacting to things... but then there's a lot of scene that suffer from what I like to call dead face syndrome-- where it seems like all the focus goes into the mouth, while the other 75% of the face just seems under-animated and stiff. More often than not, you see this sort of thing show up in RPGs especially, but it seems to have a bad habit of crossing into most narrative-based games, as well. At least the ones I've played.
There's a lot of scenes in the game that seem like they're trying to make a character seem angry, or sad, or happy-- but the facial expressions cause it to fall short. Particularly when it comes to the eyes. There's a lot of emotional scenes that lose some of the weight due to the characters looking like they're having Vietnam flashbacks while on a bad acid trip. Not to say Telltale doesn't have instances where they fall victim to this as well, but for the most part, I've found them to do a better job at utilizing the whole face when it comes to animation. Eyebrows, eyes, cheeks, mouth, nose, lips, and the asymmetry of expressions (one eyebrow raised higher than the other, etc).
You seem to have played a different game Del...each to their own as they say...because to me the facial animations are pretty damn spectacular. Telltale's problem is the stilted body...when the squint it looks like they are taking a massive shit....eyes will sometimes track weirdly....heads will twist around so far that I have on occasion called for a young priest and an old priest. And those fucking eyes....
Now here is the rub....I think Telltale's artists are way better than almost anyone else in the genre. And as I have said...using an engine that does not fight them at every step can only help produce a better looking game. Hell I am excited to see what they come up with.
I'm sorry guys, I know you're having a serious discussion here... but the way you are describing each game's facial animations is hilarious.
