Batman, definitely. Honestly, I found Guardians to be pretty dull and forgettable.
I think you'll find this pretty one-sided.
I'll preemptively play Devil's advocate. Batman was the better game, but I personally found Guardians more enjoyable. I love 70-80's rock so that plays a large part of it. The other part is that aside from a few lore changes(some major), which brought something new to the table, it felt like Telltale doing Batman. While that isn't a bad thing, it was pretty much what I expected.
Guardians' felt like more of a ride. I wasn't thinking ahead, and therefore wasn't lulled into ennui. That said, Batman is never supposed to be exciting. So, it's not like I feel Telltale failed with Batman. I just don't like Batman as a visual novel. DC has the best villains and they contrast well with how boring and dull Batman is, but spending too much time alone with Batman is pretty rough as a reader. I enjoyed Telltale's Batman, but I couldn't marathon it.
Guardians, in my opinion, began the rise of Telltale's quality with more story branching and gameplay added to the mix but Batman improved upon what Guardians started.
I'm not a huge DC fan and I say Batman was better than Guardians in terms of video games. But in terms of movies, it's the opposite.
I too have say: Batman
Very easily Batman, it had characters you could get invested in and had a very interesting story. It also changed the Batman mythos up. GOTG was just super forgettable, it didnt try anything new and just felt like a bootleg version of the movies.
Yeah, I'm sure you'll find this is a pretty one-sided poll.
I think I'd say Batman was "Better" in the sense that the story, characters and development thereof was more engaging for a larger number of people. It did its job as a Telltale game, and the plot was pretty well-constructed and enjoyable.
It took what Guardians started (rebuild Telltale and their mechanics) and expanded upon it.
So, being that it was more accepted and looked at than Guardians, it wins.
Buuut this doesn't mean that Guardians was "Bad" (subjective). I think it still reigns supreme in amount of choices and resolving consequences. Many games have a few choices that don't lead anywhere or don't change anything. This one has tons of choices that all lead to either determinant or inconsequential outcomes. The reintroduction of hubs, addition of a codex and interesting world-building email system were some great things that were missing for a while before.
I also really enjoyed the music. Sure, maybe it's unfair to compare licenced music with original music but what'cha gonna do? I liked the Guardians soundtrack more, and there were some original tracks I know I remembered at the time, but couldn't find online.
[I mean I'd probably have to say that I enjoyed Batman more, but what do I know -- I'm not good at judging my own favourites.]
Batman. By a considerable distance. GoTG improved towards the end, but it was still incredibly mediocre by Telltale standards.
Batman. But I really liked both and Guardians wasn't that far behind.
My vote goes towards Batman as it had more originality to it.
My vote would have to be for Batman ( more S2 than S1, but both I would consider better ). It's not that GoTG was a bad game by any standard. It has a great soundtrack, and when it works it's wonderful. The story in GoTG is less cohesive, and the character dynamic is less polished than it is in Batman.
Honestly I think it's subjective. I personally enjoyed GOTG more than Season 1 of Batman, even though I still liked that season, but S2 is better than both because it improves the formula and allows for a vastly different final episode. GOTG's final episode certainly has elements of that, specifically with the Empower vs Destroy choice in Episode 3, but not to the same extent. But I love the character interaction, hub design and feeling of choice and consequence in GOTG very much, and firmly believe it's Telltale's most underrated game to date.
Batman definitely. I'd say Guardians was definitely one of the weakest telltale games to date.
Batman, a lot of people thought that GOTG was boring from episode one which was very surprising, but in my opinion its a good game. I think the reason why people like Batman a lot more than GOTG is because he is a more well known superhero, the GOTG weren't really well known up until 2014 with the release of the first movie, for Batman its different, Batman has been a superhero that kids have grown up with and enjoyed watching with countless TV Series, Movies and even when reading Comics. If you have been a Marvel fan since you were a kid then you probably didn't know about the GOTG, you probably liked The Avengers or Spider-Man because they were advertised a lot more with their Animated Series and their Comics. Batman was advertised a lot to with his Hit Animated Series which later grew off into a DC Animated Universe (The DCAU) the show also stared Kevin Conroy, who is now the considered one of the best Batman VOs out there. That's why I think people like the Batman Series a lot better.
Eh.. what story branching in GOTG? If you're talking about choosing where to go then all I can say is Wolf Among Us did that years ago.
Nevermind,just check @AChicken post.
I might get backlash for this but I feel like Borderlands was able to capture the essence of the Guardians movies better than the official Telltale game did. The style of humor in TFTB felt like it could fit right at home in the Guardians universe, the scenes that were synced to licensed music just had that kick to them that the ones in Guardians needed, and the disorder among the main team in Borderlands was a lot more entertaining compared to how the dysfunction among the Guardians was handled imo (though how the relationships were done in GOTG was probably the best thing about that game.)
Anyways I'd have to pick Batman for the sole reason being how Telltale managed to cleverly reinvent the mythos in small but impactful ways to create a refreshing take on the IP, something that GOTG sorely lacked. Guardians just felt like it was trying to recreate the charm of the movies and not quite succeeding. The game was okay but I just found myself enjoying The Enemy Within a whole lot more.
* COUGH, COUGH, COUGH *
Maybe there weren't Batman S2E5 levels of branching in it, but there were some big moments. At the very least, there was way more minimal branching in the series than any other Telltale game at the time.
I just revived your thread hope you don't mind it,i never saw it before and i have to thank you for doing this.
oh no problemo (might not do much though since the guardians section is pretty much dead.)
Thank you AChicken! I feel as though people never gave Gotg the chance and thus never saw it's achievements in story branching.
Definitely Batman. All I remember about guardians is that I could count the amount of laughs I had on one hand, and never really pulled me into the very predictable story, which is sad because it tried very hard to get laughs.
