Wellington - Wasted Potential

Out of four endings at the end of Season 2, I felt that Wellington had the most potential but wasted in A New Frontier.

We never even saw the inside of Wellington and we never met anyone inside there (other than Edith). It would have been a great place for a returning character to appear in (Lilly, Christa etc) but instead Wellington fell so easily and we never saw it again (not even in flashbacks).

  • Still it's a good thing that you can get Kenny's hat.

  • Oh, yeah, definitely. And poor Edith didn't get much better.

  • Ironic.

As soon as I posted this, the story generator released and yet again Wellington got no love.

  • Yeah, that sucks.

  • Honestly Clementine in Wellington could have been an entire season on its own althought that would require the endings actually mattering and episodes being different from each other. Im not sure if alot of people would agree to this but i would have actually payed if telltale decided to make every ending its own game... would have been alot better then none of them mattering at all.

  • I'd like that and more too.
Again, "Fuck it, let's make a game regardless."

  • Yeah we hardly got to see the inside of it and what life would be like away from the threat of walkers but a generic bunch of half ass thugs destroyed it in an effortless swing

  • The thing that annoys me about the Wellington ending getting the shaft (besides what others have already said) is that to me it personally seemed like closest to a satisfying ending for season 2.

It felt like the only ending where the deaths of everyone in the game weren't entirely in vain. Like you finally found the place that was brought up for episodes, and (at the time) was safe for AJ and Clem. A true sanctuary. Yeah a lot of people died, but hey! at least the new generation have a glimpse of hope after all that sacrifice (plus I like the concept of Kenny being that one character that never really has full closure and always has an ambiguous fate in the game)

But naaahh let's make it the least acknowledged ending in the series.

  • I agree. I liked the closure a lot. It made me cry.

I'm glad that Clem got some peace at least with AJ. And you're spot on, I've always loved Kenny just walking back over the hill - never to be seen again, alive or dead. Fitting end for him.

But, I actually don't mind that it's not too acknowledged. Because compared to the other endings, I think Clementine and AJ come out best from it. Sure Clementine gets grazed by a bullet, but there was hope and peace, and it certainly wasn't as traumatic as seeing Kenny or Jane die, or losing a finger. Plus, besides Edith, we never really knew anyone there, so references to it wouldn't really touch me as much as other things would.

  • Wellington was one of the shortest and least impactful flashbacks out of all the short flashbacks. They didn't get an episode 4 flashback either and now the story generator doesn't even recognize it as an ending. I still put it above the alone endings because you can get Kenny's hat and give Kenny an unknown status but it's still incredibly weak and squandered potential.

Shame to see how Wellington ending is treated. I mean, wasn't S2's goal getting there?

  • Such a shame, when I first played season 2 my original playthrough was to get to Wellington.

  • What even was Season 2's goal, honestly?

  • Wellington should've taken the New Frontier's place in ANF considering how we still don't know jackshit about it and it could've been explored in a lot more depth.

  • We might not even get Kenny's hat if the story-builder is final. Wellington seems completely irrelevant.

  • Getting to Wellington atleast was one of the goals. Christa and Clem were going there and Kenny also heard about it. Can't recall if the Cabin Crew talked about it, but they did start heading up north too after trying to run away from Carver.
Also after escaping Howe's, the group started heading north again towards Wellington.

  • Honestly, replayed Season 2 and the whole story seems to fumble constantly, mentioning Wellington for the first 2 episodes, then focusing the story on the cabin group, then Kenny, then Howe's and then they talk about Wellington again halfway through the finale and ignoring the town they were going to.
I think the multiple endings should not have been a thing but instead end with different characters based on your choices and the group discovering Wellington.

Kenny brought it up to Clementine, Luke, and Nick during dinner.

True, though that was specifically because Luke thought they'd be able to loose his search party by going that far.

@prink34320 then they talk about Wellington again halfway through the finale and ignoring the town they were going to.

Actually, Kenny does bring it up after arguing with Luke, with the town Bonnie points out being deemed a convenient stop on the way, though I have reason to suspect that may have been added very late.

It really would've. I would have been way easier to make a continuation off that. The diverse s2 endings probably is one of the reasons they decided to make ANF about the Garcias and made Clem a sidecharacter so they could get her story on the same page with all players by utilizing cheap flashbacks. (Like mentioned before in another thread)

  • I mean, to be fair, the Garcias(minus maybe Kate) were obviously intended to be there anyway and Clementine essentially being an Advertised Extra is likely a product of the original story being reworked/scrapped so many times that the intended main focus on her had to be downsized to help streamline things.
