Clementine arrived at the ranch just in time during an assault from another group; an event that AJ later referred to as "the blood" in Done Running. She rescued AJ before anything bad could happen to both of them. Then, they arrived in Richmond and Clem warned everyone of an impending attack from that same group. Afterward, the entire community attempted to fortify Richmond while Clem made an escape plan in case they failed to defend the place. Somehow she managed to get the red car (the one she's been driving) and prepared it as the bug out vehicle. The attack eventually took place and Clem, seeing there's no way Richmond could win, brought AJ with her in the car and just make a run for it. After a few years on the road, TFS happens.
Im guessing we will be told how it fell. Its strange though, it had to have happened somewhat recently for Aj to still remember it and to develop a "thing" with the sneaking up behind him due to it.

A good spot for this could be in the very beginning of Ep2. Like a 10-15min flashback what explains "The blood", if AJ's "thing" is caused by this event and possibly other stuff. After shit hits the fan and we've seen enough, it jumps to present time hearing a gun shot and AJ saying his infamous "What, I didn't hesitate" line. Then it cuts to the intro.
You guys are reading to much into it. That whole "before the blood" comment of AJ was a way from Telltale to say: "Clementine and AJ can't go back to Richmond and the Ranch". So it would stop those people who say: "Why can't Clementine and AJ just go back to Richmond. This story makes no sense".

but they skip way too much with way too little info. they skipped a lot in the comics after all out war but kirkman easily explained that as "nothing happened". but here everytime we catch up with clem again she's changed so much and we barely get any backstory.

Clem went. Politely asked for AJ back. They said no. So she killed every single one of them and walked off with AJ.
In reality the whole "don't creep up behind me" thing is probably to do with something that happened at the ranch

I don't think that AJ has that "thing" because of the ranch. It was never said in the game.

It seems to be implied the Ranch is why Aj has a thing.

Clem went in, saw AJ, took him and as no one else showed up after 15 minutes they were legally allowed to leave.
