Why was previously and next time on twd removed?

That question was asked to Telltale in a recent AMA and they said that it was absolute hell to make them, because they often made edits to the story and it was hard to predict what was gonna happen and make actual scenes that wouldn't be cut.

  • No spilers I guess.

@qualityrice said why the "next time on TWD" were removed, but the "previously on TWD" are still there.

  • We don't even know if previously isn't there

  • Well they were sloppy and half of em didn't make it to the game so removing them can help the community from not getting triggered or Confused on why they didn't make it in the final product.

  • Because they're lazy

  • Trailers are the latest trend. Generates hype on social media, they want people to talk about it and buy the game.

I hated them both, first one because I already know what happened and it was a waste of time repeating that, the second one is because I don't want any spoilers about the next episode, and also if I play that season again, I already know what is going to happen aswell.

  • I don't mind "Previously" so I won't answer about that though I think they're still using those. "Next time" well you really have to ask? Telltale constantly made changes to the story, gameplay or how the scenes play out in the next episodes so I guess it was pain in the butt for them to listen to fans whine about how they rewrite story or create an episode totally different from what they advertised before.

  • I didn't mind getting rid of the "Next time" since 99% of the content was cut or noticeably edited differently. Like in S2 when Troy went to the house in EP2 instead of Carver.

  • Really bro? Done Running was fucking amazing, two and a half hours long, a new and very well done visual overhaul, unscripted combat, and a shit ton of hubs. I think they had enough on their plate. Not having a “next time on TWD” makes complete sense and does not make Telltale “lazy”.

  • The next time was cut because it just wasted development time and often times it didnt even come true.

Not sure why they removed previously on though, I do kinda miss that. Batman S2 did some narration thing at the start but I kinda just wish it reminded me of everything I did instead of not being sure what I said.

  • to avoid misleading people since telltale kept doing that, just look atg TWAU in the next episode (spoiler: they were all wrong)

  • Cuz it is annoying as fuck when you are replaying and can't skip it.

  • Its only 30 seconds

  • Probably because they don't make all the episodes before they bring out ep 1 and changes seemingly occur. So the previews were not usually completely accurate and in some cases pretty off.

    God bless everyone.

  • To be fair, that's partially because Troy was Carver at one point.

  • I really get not adding "next time" because of ANF and it's rewriting issues every episode and for a major reason (from my point of view) is it spoils a lot sometimes, I remember skipping it or minimizing the window whenever finishing an episode first time playing season 1 and 2 and watch a short youtube video until it's over. But I don't get getting rid of "Previously".. it was a cool addition and had an amazing soundtrack and a good quick refreshing recap of past events when playing the next episode of a season after few months of waiting.

  • Wait wait wait... Previously's are still in the games. Right?

  • Because it wasn't featured in the beginning of Done Running, yes, a "previously on" segment can be introduced at the the first episode of the season, recapping the last season's major plot events and decisions, so like Season 2.. but there wasn't anything in Done Running.. maybe because the developers want us to ignore ANF and forget about it, or it doesn't matter to Clem's story - which is right both ways. I hope it comes back in Suffer The Children.

  • Oh okay, that explains it. I think they just don't do previously's at the beginning of a season anymore. It also wasn't in ANF, and I think that the story builder kinda counts into being a previously on.

Yes, what a shocker. People complained about episodes being rewritten when they were "next time" segments present in the past and now some complain that they are gone.

Also its funny that they made 2.5 hours long episode but you say they are lazy for not implementing one thing.

Thank god the next time scenes are gone.

And it was NOT because they got lazy. They did it, because they had to use resources to make them instead of putting said resources into something more important, like polishing the game or working on the next episode right away.

They were also awfully optimized most of the time and ultimately unnecessery. I hope they're gone for good.

  • Unpopular opinion: I loved the Next Time segments. It's so interesting to see the changes made in the development process and it's a nice quirky thing, albeit not something very professional.

Dammit Telltale, ya better make that documentary for TFS like with S1, not just a blog post!
It was so cool to see Mark Darin's enthusiasm with the project and Jared Emmerson Johnson's in-depth values and processes when crafting his music for Ep2 and 3. Good times man.

  • Yes, at first. But when it was decided Carver should be an original character, they apparently created Troy with the intent of potentially being him before Michael Madsen was cast.
