IMO this is the canon ending for ANF
Ok I get that A New Frontier is old news, but I just replayed it last night so I could have a complete save to replay S4 with.
Other than noticing how fucking linear the season really was, and how awkward the voice acting is because of it (fr, like after you see Ava/Trip after the sacrifice choice, Javi goes "OH! ____ , AbOuT wHaT hApPeNeD" in the weirdest, panicky/yelling voice and then speaks completely normal immediately afterwards.)
ANYWAY, I noticed something about the new ending I got. My first playthrough I saved Kate and Gabe, but wasn't satisfied with it. It's the "best" or "happiest" ending to most people, but after experiencing this ending, it just doesn't feel genuine or as canon for Javi to do.
Saving David and Gabe is the canon ending and here's why:
- The whole season is clearly about the importance of family and legacy. Javi can promise his father to be kind and loyal to David, and this comes up again later if you choose not to fight him back.
- After saving David and Gabe, if you choose to ask David to come back with you, there is yet another callback to the conversation Javi had with his father, in which he directly quotes the "legacy is all we leave behind" line.
- Even if Javi is in a romance with Kate, she approves of you going after Gabe and David. She is actually pissed at you if you go with her, and both Gabe and David die.
The only fallacy in this ending is the fact that when David comes back, he refuses to speak to Gabe or Javi. After the whole "legacy" line, it doesn't make sense to me that David is still not trying to change or be better. But maybe he IS trying to change, and feels that he is not worthy of Javi and Gabe's love until he does change.
While I understand that you can play Javi differently to an extent, and not make the promise to his dad, I do believe that if we were unable to influence Javi at all, he would pick David and Gabe. For me, it feels like it fits Javi's personality and values the most. Having already lost Mariana, and not knowing that Kate would die, I believe he would pick blood over love.
TLDR: I think ANF is a story about family and loyalty and therefore David and Gabe surviving is the canon ending.
Comments
Nah, David's definitely intended to die. Which is good.
Kate's more ambiguous herself, so you can go either way.
I wanna say Kate going missing is probably the better book closer overall, but as far as I'm concerned, the good ending is the canon one. Even if it is a bit anticlimactic and convenient.
Yeah, I can agree with that.
I just feel Javi would definitely go after David and Gabe, and then Clementine choosing to go with you or Kate is a variation of that canon ending. I guess I prefer tragic endings though.
Also the episode starts off looking for Kate and it ends looking for Kate, except this time she isn't alive. It's great.
Yesss I greatly enjoyed the emotional turmoil that Javi experienced in that moment. (Is that sadistic?)
Especially after all the foreshadowing (David mistaking a walker for her, seeing her literally as a walker in the teaser/title screen, I forget.) It all seems to imply that she's meant to die, or at least go missing.
My ending was Kate and Gabe alive.
Edited The little shit Gabe died in mine and David lived in another with Gabe alive. All i remember really. Wish i could erase the memory of that shit pit game to be honest
That's impossible, as the ending where Gabe is dying requires no one to go save him, which means David is dead as well.
Don't really matter. They're never coming back.
Good riddance.
I disagree, imho the best ending is the one where only Javi and Gabe survive. I felt like it wrapped up all the story arcs nicely.
It was pretty obvious that this ending had the most work put into it and it overall just felt appropriate for the character and story arcs. Javi's motorcycle/bat scene is way more memorable and intense than saving Richmond on the busket, and some of the other endings are not emotionally fulfilling at all.
I agree!! If you look at one of my replies I clarify that I think both the endings that involve Javi going after David and Gabe are the canon endings, whether or not Clementine comes with. Really my point was that canon Javi would go after blood rather than "love."
I wrote it a little too focused on them both living--I was gonna edit it but eh.
the only good ending to this game is the one where gabe dies and we all know it
I hated him at a lot of moments too, but I do think he redeemed himself in the last episode. Just like I disliked Ben a lot of the time, but he redeems himself if you don't drop him off the bell tower.
Idk, I guess I have a soft spot for stupid annoying boys who ultimately are just growing up in a crazy and scary world. Hormones suck, is what I'm saying I guess lol.
David can only live in one ending and Gabe needs to be alive for it to happen
My favorite ending is where it's just Javier and Gabe. I know people don't like Gabe but I do. I'd rather have him than David and Kate.
Lol goes to show how much i paid attention. I think i had 2 saves so i got different ones
As i said before, it goes to show how little i paid attention. I had 2 saves then and i remember David lived in one so i guess Gabe lived as well but he definitely died in the other. Anyway whatever, couldn’t care less about ANF, i will never lay eyes on that crap again
A-fucking-men
You mean the shittiest excuse for an ending.
I think some of you exaggerate how bad ‘A New Frontier’ was compared to the final season. At least ‘ANF’ had a plot and Kate was good-looking.
Completely useless character who still blindly obeys daddy and abandons everyone who's kept him alive for four years despite his shallow character arc being about him wanting to be a real man and take charge, gets bitten and finally mans up by offering to do the first unselfish thing for his uncle all game is the shittiest ending? It's literally the only one with any payoff for his existence. I mean, he was too big of a screw up for me to trust him with gun so I gladly shot him, but I appreciated the gesture.
Oh look who suddenly decided to give a frag in light of recent events
1. Gabe is not "useless." Frustrating for some, yes, but not useless. He did what he could and openly wanted to do more to help. And besides--Tripp won that award by a landslide.
2. He wasn't abandoning them--he was trying to lowkey convince everyone that they need each other, but once again underestimated what a petty jackass his dad is.
3. It was at least a decent character arc that so many had a shallow to literally view of.
4. It's not the only ending where he gets any payoff, as Vengey has successfully attested to in the past, and you could've achieve a similar effect without totally throwing away the only stable developed character you had left.
5. Most importantly to my point, I am positive that the only reason(s) bothered with that ending is because they once again wanted to have their cake and eat it too.
What recent events? He did what he could for himself. He got his uncle stabbed trying "to be helpful", almost the entirety of his actions were centered around trying to prove he was a man, except for when he "tried to show everyone low-key the importance of loyalty" by getting knocked across the head by his father and shamefully following him when ordered to. I wouldn't criticize the shallow if you think this was a decent arc. I know you tend to champion the inept, but unlike Sarah, Gabe was portrayed as your average teenage douchebag who hadn't been subjected to years of the same shit Clementine and Carl had, and somehow he's the only one who comes off as an average relatable teenage douchebag.
From his inception until his welcome death, Gabe was a irredeemable character. Whatever you've deluded yourself into, fact is he we went from that psychopath stabbing a corpse in episode 2 crying about how he wishes he was a strong man like daddy to being backhanded by daddy and obediently obeying him. Instead of stepping up for the equally inept step mother and uncle who had been keeping him alive when the rest of his world wasn't. He low key is the reason only one of his parents survives. Gabe outfailed Kate, and that in and of itself is damn impressive. Selfish little prick ends up in the same place he was throughout the entire game in the endings he's alive.
The latest episode.
Which is why most of actions involved try to help, doing for, and occasionally standing up for others. Kay.
Also, deja vu.
To be fair, I more got the vibe he would rather fight off the Specialist rather than just be caught in a tight spot.
Why does everyone take that so literally?
Pretty sure it wasn't in that order. Or lead along, in the latter's case.
Unless you mean when they drove off, in which case we don't see or to my knowledge hear about what actually happened. Given how fast it was, one would assume he simply got shoved into the truck due to the walkers coming at them.
Huh. Funny. I don't remember seeing Tripp on that list.
Also, 'cuse you.
I mean, when you put it like that, it almost makes sense.
How?
It's almost like this was a story that kept getting changed and redirected until they pulled the finale out of their ass to rush out the door.
There's an element of mellowing out that you're flanderizing there, but still.
Even though David was gonna pull his shit regardless?
Fine, granted. I am, again, giving him quite a bit of shit. I think we've agreed in the past that the idea of what he was supposed to be was a good one, but the execution was poorly done. Speaking of execution and my original posts, sometimes you tend to come off as a belittling uh, user, when people argue against you rather than entertaining the notion they may have some merit or experience behind their view points.
Gabe wanting to be a man, I wasn't taking it literally, I got it. He wanted to be able to step up, he failed to save his baby sister and I get why that hit him so hard. It should have culminated in him standing between the father he once knew and the uncle he watched get his ass kicked by said father. After years spent protecting him. That was my thing, it ended up being this arbitrary choice "Do you save your blood family, or ya LOVE family?!" Gabe would have been an infinitely better character if the choice was to save David or help Gabe and Kate.
We really don't.
That game destroyed our season 2 endings, reduced Clem to a shitty side character to introduce Javier with his family that no one cares about, the episodes were also really short,
they lied to us,about the first two episodes being so long that they had to split them in two, about the 42 different Clementine,
and let's not forget the rewrites, the original story was so different that what we got, this game was a goddamn mess so no we're really not "exaggerating" that game pratically destroyed the entire series and Telltale dude, doesn't matter how much you like it that's a fact.
They should've just made their own thing instead of trying to put Clem in a story she doesn't belong to,but then pretty much no one would be buying that game.
As much as i loved Michonne it sold like shit and people didn't care about it they just wanted more Clementine.
Okay, you win.
Failed story anyways it doesn't matter.
Cheese and Rice, just remembered which thread this is.
Eh, I'll get to it later.
Don't give in, son. You keep fighting that good fight. Even if pineapple on pizza is the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of, someone likes it. That someone is you. You push for those pineapples, bro.
You should try it; I promise you will not regret it.
If you're talking about pineapple pizza I will murder you. My sister keeps on with that, all my restraint is on that
...
Why
Pineapple and pepperoni are nice together.
