Less Gory Death (Mess-up) Scenes in Season 2?

edited November 2013 in The Walking Dead

In Season 1, the few (I think exactly three) times Clementine could die due to player error, Telltale made a conscious effort to avoid showing it happen. Behind the bars in the train station in Episode 1, the camera moved to Lee’s distressed face when she was being mauled if you failed to unlock the door. In the jewelry store at the end of Episode 5, she could die mauled by the cop if you didn’t kick her the baseball bat or crushed by the glass statue on the pedestal if you didn’t warn her about it. Both times, the camera again shifted to Lee.

I’m not complaining. Child violence isn’t cool, even in video games. Game reviewers often refuse to even give a rating if excessive violence towards children is shown, and especially if that violence is controlled by the player. Developers can get around this one of two ways; making the “kids” not technically “kids” (like the Bioshock little sisters who you can harvest not technically being human, and the kid in the attic who you can shoot, stomp, or hit with a wrench in Episode 4 being a turned walker) or not showing the graphic result of that violence (the Clementine deaths, and turning the camera away from Duck if you choose to shoot him in the head).

What I’m worried about is, since Clementine is the playable character for Season 2, that this will cheat death scenes. In Season 1, if you failed a quick-time-event, Lee could be shot in the face, have his intestines pulled out, have his neck torn out by a walker, fall several stories to his death… you get the idea. That was by no means the highlight of the game, but it did add a bit of flavor if you did mess up, and made you feel like there were real stakes involved in Lee’s situation. I’m not sure they can (or would) do the same thing for Clementine. Even a year later, she’s still a kid.

How do you think Telltale will solve this? Will we get the same PG-13 deaths for Clem that we did in Season 1, or will they be as graphic as Lee’s? Will it even be possible for Clem to die? Or are we being trolled by Telltale, and will Clem be the “playable character” for the first few minutes until she dies horrifically (like the very beginning of The Last of Us)? Comment below!

  • Umm I don't plan on messing up with Clem so I couldn't care less about how gory the death scenes will be.

How about no? And was it necessary to spoil The Last of Us for people like me who haven't played the game yet?!

  • Great point, they will not relent, trust me if anything stuff like chopping off arms and legs might be MORE common 400 days in, and PG13 violence does not fit the world of the Walking Dead anyway.

  • Agreed, I don't want them to hold off on the gore, failing will just make you want to succeed more.

  • Jess had some pretty gruesome death scenes in Jurassic Park.

  • Good old JP... not that great of a game, but sure had some good deaths.

  • I think we need to remember the rating of this game. This is not Mario cart or something... I think what they could do is have Clem by being attacked but not dying the game over could appear while she's struggling to stay alive (even though she is obviously going to die) this game is rated for mature players.
    Yes mature.
So let's be mature about it.

  • You know, I honestly was thinking about this as well. I would feel better if we got more of "you have failed" game over, (where you have taken too long or screwed up and Clem just lost the only chance to escape and/or survive), rather than the "you are dead" game over (where Clem ends up being eaten alive by walkers or worse. =( ).

  • Yeah uh, now that you mention it the Jurassic Park deaths WERE pretty damn violent, and abundant. That game was rated T, this one is M. I don't think they will be as graphic as Lee's (arrow through the eye is pretty rough) but that doesn't mean it won't be heartbreaking to see.
When we played as Lee, I didn't want him to get hurt but I knew he was a tough guy who could take a few punches. Now the stakes are ridiculously high, a mis-click or bad choice could end up getting Clem hurt. It's exciting and scary at the same time.

  • I can't imagine Clem being eaten or worst torn apart. I'll promise not to let her die in my playthrough.

  • Clementine should get eaten by walkers like any other pc when they fail, its rated M fot mature

  • Lol so that's the meaning of mature to you.

  • I understand you care about Clementine, but for Clementine to not have noncanon deaths by walkers is just silly.

  • You're right but you absolutely can AVOID that. :)

  • Her death in Ep 1 is pretty much completly visable so i think were fine, she's a year older and while they may not show her getting torn apart they can show her dying slightly off camera. Honestly it might be extra insentive for the player to not die as some of Lee's were almost to the point of amusing.
