Something just destroyed all my S1 save files.

edited November 2013 in The Walking Dead

It's like a sick fucking joke. So many hours of time invested in a video game - hours I could have, SHOULD have given to my family, my work, you name it - hours that I've wasted in this one life that I've been given by God - all wiped out in the blink of an eye.

Here's what happened, as close as I can figure it: I reached the scene in episode 3 ("Long Road Ahead") when I'm about to confront Kenny on the train about Duck's condition. Except I couldn't make my cursor click on the door leading out of the passenger car to Kenny. It simply stopped moving to the right, with the door's "button" just out of reach.

So, I shut down and restarted my PS3. Twice. The first time, the problem was exactly the same as before. The second time, I got to the menu screen, and found nothing except three slots with NEW GAME emblazoned across every one.

Telltale...it's hard to get across just how much this feels like a punch to the gut. I don't want to be melodramatic about this, but it's very difficult. I don't know who...or what...is to blame, or if this has already happened to other customers, but I honestly don't think I can play this game again if the same ogre that ate all of my hours of progress and emotional investment under one minute will keep rearing its head over and over.

I'm devastated.

  • Ahhh man that's brutal. Are you accidentally on a different user?

  • hasnt happened to me on any platforms

  • Jeez, man, that just sucks. No two ways about it.

I've never heard of this save bug before either. There was one for Episode 4 but that was patched a while ago. Even if the file was corrupted, I can't imagine why it would erase all of your saves. Maybe it was because you turned it off while it was saving? I guess it doesn't really matter now...

Anyway, it's probably best to take a break from the game for a little while after something like this, but I do think you should try to play through it again before playing Season 2. Even if it means not playing Season 2 immediately when it comes out.

Sorry to hear that, I had a similar issue on the 360 version. It's a shame but the usual advice is to start backing up saves.

And here's hoping that season 2 manages to address some of these things.

  • Sorry, man...If it's any consolation, many people come to the support forums for help/save glitches. You should try there, perhaps someone can respond to your save file problem. http://www.telltalegames.com/support/

Initially, I joined these forums back in June 2012 just to report a save file problem on my Mac for episode 2. I ended up having all my save files lost in folders on Steam and having to resort to having all my play-throughs on the PS3.

  • Okay...false alarm. Sort of.

I followed NamelessAce's suggestion and switched to an alternate user. The save files are thankfully back to normal, but the problem with the train door persists, which means I still can't advance in the game at all. I don't know if the file itself is somehow corrupted, but I don't really want to play all the way through ANOTHER save file just to come up against the same dead end.

  • Oh damn, sorry to hear that. In the end there's no other option than to start from another save file and risking the same door glitch, I guess.

  • Guys any ideas what i might do? I am new to TWD and started playing since yesterday.. Now every time i hit the continue button, nothing happens?? I already re-installed the game and created a new save folder so i wouldn't get confused even more ect? I also checked the games compatibility mode and run it on administrator as well, but nothing changed at this time... I'm not really technical and quite new to playing this game, so hopefully some of you have more clues than me (i'm clueless) :D

Thanks! (oh, and sorry for entering this tread.... I didn't know where else to go yet...)

Which operating system? You might try to make a post in the technical issues section of this community, here

    Windows 7 (x64) Sp1
    Intel Core i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80 GHz 2.80 GHz (I don't know why it says that 2 times?)
    6,00 GB RAM
    GTX 680
GeForce 331.82 Driver (latest at this time of writing)

Anyway, i deleted every save game and re-installed the game 2 more times and after getting the connection screen it just 'hangs' there while the game says that it's active, yet nothing happens and i can't even go into settings or create a new game ect any more???
Btw: I have the retail GOTY Edition which isn't linked to Steam... It does need to connect to something it seems, but i doubt it's working as it should atm? It did yesterday though???

Should i ask for a refund instead?! :'(

  • hmm do you have a good connection to the internet? if it needs to connect to something it might be that. that or it could just be bad data on the disk itself which is rare but can happen from time to time (black ops 2 release had a bad batch of disks when it came out.)

I'm glad you found your save-files again, but like Firewallcano said rewinding should do the trick.

I don't know about you people, but I've not come across a single fault with the game since I bought it using Steam Cloud. I'm not entirely sure, so please don't take my word for it, but I think the Steam Cloud counteracts lost and corrupted saves. I first played the game without Steam Cloud, which resulted in a save problem between Episode Two and Episode Three. My final choice didn't carry over. The problem was fixed by enabling the Steam Cloud and re-play the episode.

  • The game 'hangs' by locking up?; Not being able to move the mouse etc?

This comes from what I've heard on other forums. Many have encountered problems with The Walking Dead on Nvidia graphics cards. It could be a driver-related problem. I have always run AMD and have tested The Walking Dead on two AMD computers with different processors and both work flawless. At present I run on the AMD Radeon R9 270X. Try to check up on Nvidia related forums if others also have problems with the game on the same driver.

Thanks for the replies guys, i really appreciate it! :)
Oh, i found a tread concerning my 'current' launch difficulties, and i'll try that out shortly... I will add a link as well so you all can see what i'm trying to get solved...

This is precisely the problem sometimes with Nvidia. They release a new driver fixing a problem with a game, but instead creates another problem for a different game. I've experienced it myself on a Nvidia GeForce GT 335M laptop.

Good luck and let us know if you solve the problem.

  • I know how it feels pro , it has already happened to me but in FIFA 07 Manager Mode
I finished about 12 seasons and bought all the good players and my computer turned off white it was saving :)
    I was like , WTF ?

  • Hey guys (generally speaking)!!!

Well, i got the game running as fine as before again... I followed the link i posted earlier, and only did a complete uninstall/reinstall of the game and all saves.. Luckily for me that was not that hurtful because i've only been playing it for about 5hours...
I also made a 'more' personal folder so i would find it "again" when i would have to do some backtracking (as said, i'm "mostly" dumb with cpu's and stuff...) :P

I also unplugged any controllers at start up/reboot, and now it works as a charm again (I do hope it lasts)...

Thanks guys!!!! Thumbs up to you all! :D

  • Hmm (°_°)? I have a retail version without a Steam Cloud connection system thingy.... (Yes, I know what Steam is ''I'm just making it funny" as always...) Is there a way to copy my retail version to Steam without having some kind of code??

I think i would be in for an unpleasant surprise otherwise, after reading such comments?! /:(

Let me know what to do guys, because i really don't know....

    Thanks!
