Late to the party, but looking for feedback!

edited December 2013 in The Walking Dead

Hi there!

My name is Starmatske, I just picked up 'The Walking Dead' off of steam, and I decided to record it for my YouTube channel. I'm always looking for constructive advice so if at all possible, I'd love to hear your thoughts on what I made so far.

Thanks in advance

Edit: Wow guys, thanks for the subscriptions! I've noticed a big spike in views as well. I'm very glad you are all enjoying it. As of now, episode 2 is uploaded as well (just not published yet :p)

Here's a link to the playlist for your convenience;

  • I'd like to say I liked the video a lot, and I have some advice.

First, I'd try to get the game and the DLC (400 days) done as soon as possible. Season 2 is coming before Christmas.

Secondly, stay away from the forums until you beat the game! This place is filled with spoilers, and you do NOT want to spoil the story of yourself.

  • Hey Michael

Thanks a bunch, I'll try to spoiler-proof my internet searching for now! I already picked up the DLC, so hopefully I'll be able to finish it in time!
Subscribe if you want to stay tuned ;).

  • Nice job! Very entertaining and your commentary is appreciated. Any thoughts on having a webcam in addition to the voice-over? Half the fun is seeing reactions as well as hearing them.

  • Hey Aidiekins

Thank you very much! I don't think I'll be doing a facecam, I understand the notion of seeing the reactions, but I've never been a fan of facecams. Plus, I'd be extremely uncomfortable, I think :p.

Thanks for watching though, subscribe to stay tuned <3.

  • I'm liking the play through so far and can't wait for more, you actually have another sub ;) I haven't watched any you tubers play it because all the ones that have are either uninteresting or loud annoying dicks.Look forward to seeing you play the rest and be prepaired to make some tough calls in episode 2

  • Hey Cactus

Thank you for the sub! I actually just finished episode 2, I'm really starting to question the sanity of the devs now. I think I'm going to stay in bed tomorrow... wow.

Also, thank you for not considering me uninteresting and or a loud annoying dick! I aim to be neither of those :p.

  • Good luck mister! Enjoy the game :)

  • I'm just about to start your video, but I'll make one suggestion right now-edit the title of your video. It should basically have "Episode 1, Part 1" or something similar in the title. Not including something like that can make finding the next video difficult. Without numbering like that, YouTube is unlikely to put the next part in the related videos section to the right. Also, a person searching for the next one may end up clicking on the wrong video and getting spoiled. Also, having titles like "Out of Atlanta" can be a risk. That one is fine, but odds are you're going to end up spoiling the game or your choices for someone, unintentionally doing that. If I see the name of a certain character, for example, in one of the titles, that tells me that character is still alive.

  • Hey Duck

Thanks for the feedback! I always tend to put my videos in playlists anyway, so that usually helps to find the next video. I'm really picky with spoilers myself, I'll usually name my episodes in such a way that it could mean anything. As far as the advice on the numbering goes, I'll keep that in mind. Thank you very much for the constructive advice, stuff like this can really help me. I hope you enjoyed the video!

  • Well, it might lessen the suspense if you play all five episodes at once, but it's still amazing. And the cliches that you pointed out in the video will go away by the time you get halfway through. So you have that to look forward to.

As for advice, you've pretty much got things set. Although, A helpful tip for pretty much every point-and-click is to click everything you can. Always leave the things you think will cause story progression for last, so that you don't miss out on important dialogue or monologue. Trust me when I say it's worth it. Knowing the motivation for characters can affect what you have to say to other characters later on, so don't skimp. Don't worry about viewers, most people will enjoy it if you go through everything, but not if you speed through it. Take some time to think about stuff, it'll give you ideas to ask questions to you fanbase, improving interaction.

In the end, though, you have a great sense of presence and voice, and you'll pick up the mechanics of the game quite soon. Good job, and good luck, and most of all, have fun.

  • Playlists help, but there are some issues there too. For example, if I were to click on one of your videos via my Favorites or History, it won't be shown as part of the playlist, with the rest of the list to the right. It's a huge YouTube inconvenience, especially when you're on an iPad.

  • Point taken, I've changed the names around. In hindsight, this was a very good tip, thanks for that!

  • Hey Zurroid

I'm trying to do as much as I can, every now and again I'll notice that I missed something (woops). I'm definitely trying to reason with the game as much as possible, sometimes there's little time for that though (ep 2 for example, dear lord).

Anyways, thanks for the kind words!

  • Yeah, that'll happen. I missed some bits in my first playthrough too, and noticed it only in subsequent playthroughs. That's the thing with this game, you never know what is important, but hey, it's part of the appeal.

Also, you got through till Episode 2 already? Or is it Shawn's farm? I'm not sure, what with the video naming and all.

  • Is Part 4 private? There's a private video in the playlist.

  • edited December 2013

It's a common releasing technique. Uploading the video as "private" and release them on a schedule. So I think, he loads them up and releases them one-by-day by "un-privating" the videos. Part 3 was also private two days ago.

By "common" i mean, I've seen this twice.

  • Made is correct. I upload my videos whenever I can and release them on a day-to-day schedule. At the moment, episode 1 is up in six different segments, of which the first three are public. Hope this explains it ;)!

  • Coolcoolcool. Might I also suggest some sort of intro or outro? Right now, the videos end sort of abruptly, and begin that way too.

Otherwise, just keep up the good uploading and you should be fine. Oh, and I subbed.

  • You're making me a little bit sad inside now, for the longest time I had my avatar-ish outro. For this series, I thought I'll spice it up with a fancy outro with two annotations :(.

On a serious note though, I'm not sure how I feel abut intros. I think that for let's plays, they generally get in the way. I'd like people to be able to pick up the video where it left off that way.

The outro might be a bit much... what do you think?

Oh, and thanks a bunch for the sub!

Whoops, my bad, I don't think my brain even registered the outro. Now that I see it, it is pretty cool, but I think that the underlying problem isn't that. While I suggest you keep the outro, I think the episodes themselves end sort of abruptly. A nice fade-in to the music as the play reaches an end(for other let's plays) would be good, and try softer tones for The Walking Dead. Alternatively, you could juat personally sign off from the video if it's during the actual Episode brakes. As for in between parts, I couldn't say. I just watch videos, I don't make them, so I don't know how helpful or feasible my advice will be.

Still, if you need to ask anything, I'll try my best. And no problem. For the sub, I mean. Good content.

Man, I need to work on paragraph structure.

  • The daily release schedule has been broken!D :

  • Indeed it has, but I'll compensate you for it. Apparently episode 3 is famed for the audio bugs in it. I tried to remedy that to the best of my abilities. I just ended up taking down the videos I had uploaded but not published yet and re-encoding them. As we speak, I'm getting ready to record episode 4. Hope that clears things up a little.
