Season 2 Greenman Gaming steam key?
Hey, im not sure if this is the right place to post haven't been on these forums in YEARS, and the site has changed itself up quite considerably since my last visit, gotta say though it looks great everything looks more polished. ahem anyways
i just pre ordered the walking dead season 2 on greenman gaming, and then had a minor panic attack when it didn't give me a key for it, obviously i know the games not out yet, but it also categorized the game under other games, not steam games, just hoping my purchase nets me a steam key, nice to keep things organized yknow.
also another question, if i dont have a steam version and end up with a telltale version, will my save still carry over from my first season? id be extremely gutted not only if i have to buy the game again to get it in my steam collection (kind of pedantic, but the idea of not having one of the games im most looking forward to not apart of my larger collection available whenever just really bothers me for some reason) and i will definitely be distraught if the saves are incompatible between the two versions

I read it somewhere that Steam version can also read Telltale version, not pretty sure how the process is.
Yeah I'm in the same boat in regards to Steam. Not that I am against it not being Steam especially with that discount before launch but I was hoping to be able to run it on Steam. Would like to know if I can activate it on Steam before I try and get a refund.
It makes no difference which version you own, because the save files are located in the same folder.
yeah it does kinda feel sneaky giving season 1 and 400 days steam keys and then not giving season 2,
i always thought telltale and valve were close companies, literally down the block from each other
i hope they havent had any disagreements to cause telltale to stop giving steam keys out
Nope. It's just that Telltale's going down a more self-publishing role, so places are getting Telltale's version of the game, not Steam's. No falling our or anything (from what I know).
And once a game's activated on Steam, it's there. No refunds (unless you're very, VERY lucky, which you won't be).
GreenManGaming will give you a key for Telltale's version, not the Steam one. You can redeem it through this page, and the game will be added to your Game Library (once it comes out).
As for save games, it's been confirmed that use can use the save game from Season 1 in Season 2... no matter which version of S1 you played. So you can use the Steam S1's save with Telltale's S2.
The team's told me that S2 will automatically search for S1 save games, so you won't need to worry about looking for it ourself. Which is nice.
Well, does this mean that Telltale might give me a refund? I bought the game from GMG just to learn that I have to use some new account and another proprietary software just to play the damn thing. I call foul Telltale, sorry.
Does the Telltale version activate Steam achievements? Otherwise it does make a difference.
Uh, there's no additional software besides the game itself. GMG gives you a code for the game on HERE, not Steam, so all you need to do is download the game from your game library (once it's out) and install it.
If you still want a refund, get in touch with who you bought it from - in this case, GreenManGaming. As long as you haven't redeemed the code, chances are good you should be able to get a refund.
No achievements from the TTG version.
Maybe, maybe not. Last time I asked for a refund, they told me they couldn't because the keys already went out.
That is still the case, I asked for a refund last night and got a reply this morning. =[
I got it for $16 something on GMG and would gladly pay an additional $8 for a Steam key so that I can track my game progress (screenshots and Achievements) through Steam.
Consumer law dictates you are covered for the first 14 days of purchase, and since even if you pre-ordered the time starts on actually receiving digital goods/key, thusly if what they sold you was wrong in what you will get, i.e. they said steam key and it turns out to be a key for here then you can rightfully as is your right ask for a full refund.
I don't believe they ever actually stated that it would be a Steam key though.
In fact, this is written in great big text on the game page:
This is hugely disappointing to me. I understand that Telltale wants, needs, and rightfully deserves all the money that they can get, so I really can't fault them for what they're doing, but I still feel swindled in a sense.
What does it cost Telltale to generate a steam key? I can't imagine more than a few dollars if that -- I will gladly pay $5 to convert or trade my Telltale key for a Steam key. The achievements, and screenshots with community hub integration are worth the extra cost of admission.
GMG has already told me that they will not issue me a refund. Can anything be done from Telltale's end?
Exactly. I replied them that it is against EU law (any "law" or "policy" that makes me waive my right to a refund is null under it) but they have not replied since.
No matter if they said they'll give out Steam keys (which I think they didn't, everyone just thought that they will do that based on past experiences; Telltale made a bait-and-switch) or not. If the product is not used (with digital goods that means redeeming and/or downloading) I have 14 days to return it and get my money back.
Unfortunately the Internet Wayback Machine can't help me I'm pretty positive it didn't say it explicitly that it will use a Telltale account. Just a Third-Party DRM. Which is also quite weird since in the email receipt it does mention that it will require a TT account and how to get one.
The funny thing is that they say they want to cut out the middle man which is fine by me.
But wait. Doesn't Amazon, GMG or any other digital retailer get it's share of the purchase? I'm fairly positive they do and it's not only the bad wolf Steam that does this which would mean that their argumentation is rather void.
I too bought the GMG key thinking it was the steam version. I'd prefer Steam integration, but does buying the pre-order at least count toward getting the collectors CD when everything is released?
I'm guessing that Telltale let GMG sell the game at such a great discount just to get people into the Telltale system so that those same people will buy straight from Telltale in the future. If Telltale just sold Steam keys, it would be difficult for people to discover that, since they'd just get Steam keys elsewhere and activate straight on Steam.
It's not as awful as what Ubisoft is doing with Uplay, but it still rubs me (and I'd gather a lot other people) the wrong way. In a time where consumer choice is so important, it seems like a perfect solution would be to offer a key exchange program for a few dollars (or if someone bought directly from Telltale, then they should be given the option). Like... if you don't care, buy it cheap from us, or if you do care, buy it at normal price and get a Steam key from us (or Origin key if it's even sold there).
Yep. So long as the game registers here, you can get the Collector's Disc once it's done.
the self publishing route hasnt really worked so well for EA and Ubisoft, im sure origin does alright because of the big name exclusives
but lets face it, everyones sick of having seperate accounts for separate services with different middleware in between.
ive bought things through telltale before, i like this service, but then steam blew up and telltale put their stuff there it just became more convenient to keep ALL of my games in one place and not just telltale games one place, everything else on steam, its not very consumer friendly is the point im trying to make.
the whole giving steam keys for season 1 and 400 days on GMG and then NOT doing that for season 2 is the bit that irks me most, that feels like such a bait and switch, i love telltale but im feeling a little misled and used right now, I KNOW the gmg page paints it clear and I KNOW i should have checked first, it just never even crossed my mind mainly because of season 1 and 400 days being steam keys, i only bought 400 days via gmg but still i thought it was fair to assume a steam key with this purchase.
its not just having all my games under one banner i cant use cloud saves, which has become encredibly useful between visiting friends and coming home from uni. no trading cards, personally i dont care for trading cards but ive been making some decent money back by selling them. no community hub and screenshots, well i can still use the hub but not uplaod my own screenshots
Darth Marsden can you comment on this- http://www.telltalegames.com/support/discussion/53526/the-walking-dead-season-2-greenmangaming-com-key ?
Can your support exchange TT keys for Steam keys?
Great post... lots more reasons I didn't even consider (all games under 1 service (you know steam isn't going away), family sharing, cloud saves, trading cards). Hopefully Telltale can generate Steam keys for those who really care. I'm happy to pay a few dollars even.
Ah. Already asked and am awaiting an answer.
I really wouldn't get your hopes up though, I'm pretty sure they answer will be 'no'.
