Wait, that's not right. (Importing Season 1 Save Game Data)

edited December 2013 in The Walking Dead

That "Previously on The Walking Dead" opening in my game was wrong. It showed Lee sparing the St. John brother that attacked them in the shed when I clearly killed him in front of Clem. (I know, I'm a horrible person, but he was seriously messed up!)

Everything else it showed in the opening was right as far as the big beats, like how I picked to kill Lee and how I supported Clem in her quest to find her parents in Savannah.

Then came the chapter Later That Night when Clem talks about Season 1 to one of the new characters. I find it interesting that you gave us the option to lie about certain events. I would have thought that those dialogue choices would have been pre-selected based on the imported save data. But I had the option to lie about having to kill Lee, as well as completely omitting the fact that he taught Clem how to shoot a gun in the opening of the final chapter for this episode.

Did anyone else notice this? I'm pretty sure my save game data isn't corrupt or incomplete, but I thought I'd post this just in case anyone else noticed this as well.

  • I did see the same thing as you, as far as I can tell. Though I did spare the St. John brother. It could be that the intro is always the same :) Did you cut Lee's arm off? Because I did and it was showed in the opening

  • it didn't show me sparing St. john guy it skip to the part where clem asked if they were dead the choice I did see in it were from 4 and 5 but none from 1,2,3 or just 2 not sure if my save got corrupted and I thinking that I need to replay the first one to get a uncorrupted save

  • Mine was good ! It showed exactly what i've done.

  • on my opening everything was right. Could be pure luck but still

  • Nope. I didn't cut Lee's arm off, so I never saw that clip in the opening.

  • To be fair, it only showed the choices you made when Clem was present. I never saw, and I don't think it was ever a part of the opening to show what you did with Lily on the road, even though Clem was technically there.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that I killed the crazy one but spared the other St. John brother? I don't know how they keep track of those kind of things honestly.

  • I had the same issue with the "Previously on" after importing my save. I'm just hoping it was a one time thing and that he doesn't show up later on or something. Has anyone who killed the brother in the barn actually seen that scene replayed properly at the beginning of Season 2?

  • It'd be nice if we could get a technical person from TTG in this thread. I'm actually curious about what gets picked to be played on the "Previously on" opening that involves the imported save data.

  • I'm going to assume it's because the choice listings say, "Didn't kill BOTH St. John brothers". I'm going to assume the game thinks because you spared one of them, it counts it as sparing both perhaps?

  • Not directly the scene. But at the end when the guy who took Clem and Lee fought, I was able to see that his arm was missing.

  • Ah, in my opening, it showed that fight and Clem killing The Stranger, which happened in my save game and surprised the hell out of me when I first played through. I wonder if it shows the alternate take on that scene if Clem didn't kill The Stranger. Does anyone have that in their imported Save Game data?

  • Well, if that's the case, then all the data imported properly and I guess I'm just being nit-picky. Oh well, we'll see since all the press says the save game data call backs start with Episode 2.

I killed one of the brothers in the barn. In the opening I got the scene as if I spared him (probably would, had i known Clem would be watching :( ). Beside that rest of the things seemed to be ok, but there wasn't much details. I did cut my hand off and I did ask Clem to shoot me. So at least those were right in the opening.

  • Yeah I'm having the exact same problem Zeek, every one of my decisions was correctly reflected in the Episode preview, except for skewering Danny where Lee was shown sparing him. And I suspect, as Arbitrator says, it's because the save import is as binary as it is reflected in the save stats.

And I wouldn't call it nit-picky, Telltale really shouldn't gloss over a detail as significant as "did Lee impale a guy in front of Clementine?". None the less some clarification from the staff would be good.

  • If I'm not mistaken my opening scene was right the way I played it.

But I had several playthroughs of Season 1 so I can't be 100% sure but the arm thing was shown correctly I know for sure in my game.

  • Mine also showed me sparing Danny (which I didn't), but everything else was right. It was weird, but oh well. At least not a lot is wrong.... so far.

  • Import works seemingly fine, but I keep getting the "vanilla" version (which has almost nothing in common with my decisions in S01) of the "Previously on..." clip afterwards. Total letdown and I'm pretty sure it is related to the savegame bug drama Telltale never bothered to fix. Pretty much ruined the whole franchise for me.

  • I got the same thing- I killed Danny, spared Andy and got shown that I spared Danny in the opening. Everything else was right. I guess the "didn't kill both St. John brothers" choice automatically assumes you spared both. Anyway, seeing how we're in direct control of Clem and her choices, as well as the fact that she's seen some pretty messed up shit regardless of whether you killed Danny in front of her eyes or not, I don't think that's gonna have a lot of impact.

  • Same here...at first I was shocked and thought "well, shit. My savegame didn't get accepted and now it's doing random stuff." but everything else matched, so...I was relieved, but a little bit disappointed that it got that one thing wrong.

  • What save game bug?

I got Season 1 during a Steam Sale months before Season 2 was officially announced.

  • Clementine mentions to Luke that Lee had his arm cut off but in my playthru I left Lee's arm on...And in the opening it showed me sparing Danny but I killed him. So my save file isn't right.

Seems like while the fix enables you to finish S01, the "recovered" save files (or rather the prefs.prop file) don't contain all the info necessary for a fully working import in S02.

  • Eeesh! Looks like I lucked out, since I didn't have that problem. But, again, I bought and played Season 1 back in August of this year, so maybe that has something to do with it?

  • Don't think so. I got the game when 400 Days came out, and I still got the bug. The typical cause of the corruption seems to be a crash while the game starts, and that's exactly what happened to me. Looks like atm backing up your prefs.prop file every now and then is the only way to avoid a total loss.

But at least I managed to make my "reanimated" work again - well, at least the "Previously on..." sequence fits now. Fingers crossed.

  • Good to know. If the game does crash on me, I'll make sure to follow those steps. (Or maybe I should just back up the prefs.prop file before even starting the game?)

  • It is no bad idead to backup the file. It is very small and therefore it should be no problem to copy it somewhere else. Just make sure, that you only do this while the game is NOT running or you could damage the file.

  • Nope, all my choices were properly displayed.

  • All my choices were displaying right, except sparing Danny. I didn't spare him. His brother Andy I did.

    So yeah, preview it's bugged.
