What was the point in the change to the controls?
I'm referring to the controller here.
In the first season the d-pad of controllers mirrored the face buttons, so you could use it to select actions. I did this as it felt more comfortable using the d-pad to make the selections while I moved the cross-hair around with the right analogue stick.
Yet in season 2 the d-pad is used to manually select items in your inventory, which seems to be an utter waste of time, since you can't actually select anything and the options you have appear on the selection wheel anyway.
This is just an annoyance to be honest but it really does niggle away at me.

Variety?
Variety for what reason though?
Manually being able to select items in the inventory does nothing other than remove a feature from the first season.
It seems like a change purely for the sake of it.
The controls and reticle are now reminiscent of TWAU. But I do agree with you, in that I miss the controls and reticle from S1.
Yeah, that inventory selection thing is weird and seemingly pointless, other than to remind you of what you're carrying I guess. I never knew you could use the d-pad in S1, that's pretty cool! I like the smaller reticle. It's less obtrusive, or at least it would be if it still disappeared when inactive. I miss that. Another weird UI change in TWAU is that you can no longer click an interactive hotspot while walking. Well, you can, but it won't do anything. Can't recall if TWD S2 adopted that particular quirk or not.
Because they wanted to fix something that didn't need to be fixed at all.And because they wanted to copy-paste control from TWAU for which they for some reason think are better then S1.
Variety of game play to make it more interesting I suppose. They seem to be always tweaking things a little like in episode three with the new shooting mechanics. Its been quite a while since i played season 1 so I guess I didnt notice it was that different.
Because it's a new season, so... new interface ?
Clementine sees the world differently? Haha. Yeah, it's a little unnecessary but I don't mind.
I really hated the interface change, but eh, if the story is good I'll just have to deal with it.
You could still use the d-pad to fire however, they just added the option to use the trigger if you wanted to.
I've come straight off a play through of season 1, so the change was instantly noticeable to me.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still loving the story and the change is not a deal-breaker.
As I mentioned in the opening post, it's just a niggle which perhaps I am noticing more than I should since I came straight into season 2 from a season 1 play through.
