Theories: What sort of survivor will Carver be?

edited December 2013 in The Walking Dead

Long thread alert: skip to the bottom two paragraphs if you wish for the primary topic discussion. I apologize if this was posted or discussed previously, but I lurk about and never saw anything like this. If i missed this topic, just ignore this.

Also, WHO he is is irrelevant to the theories here. I've seen that Carver may be the binoculars man and theories it could even be Lilly or Kenny. Anyway, here we go:

So in The Walking Dead comic universe, we have had two very different types of major antagonists. That being The Governor and Negan.

The Gov was a psychotic man obsessed with control and power with no morals. He captured Rick, Michonne and Glenn and did horrible things to them simply because he wanted to. He originally intended to feed them to the arena zombies and ends up cutting off Rick's hand, mercilessly raping Michonne and mentally fracturing Glenn by forcing him to listen to his treatment of Michonne (so he got off lucky considering). The man didnt care about the people in his town and killed anyone out in the world to steal their supplies to better fortify himself.

Negan is a very different beast. He is still quite insane, and I won't spoil too much for comic fans who aren't caught up but is willing to kill to drive his point across for control. However, he is also quite complex. He seems to only extort survivor groups as part of a post apocalyptic protection racket, but to him he is uniting the groups and keeping a new civilization going. He doesn't really kill for no reason as he is seen to have an admiration for Carl despite Carl killing several of his people. He also doesn't want Rick dead because he thinks Rick is going along with his plans and that he would become a martyr if dead.

So the question becomes what will Carver be like? He is seemingly being built up as this seasons major villain. Is he even a villain? Are Pete and Luke's group truly the villains? Why did they split from Carver's group?

I just have this feeling that Carver will end up not being a true villain. Perhaps he will end up being some sort of dictator with somewhat cruel methods, but his goals are ultimately to unite survivors and keep people alive. We saw the slaughter on the beach, but we don't know that was Carvers doing at all. Even if it was, the man Clem recognized that attacked Christa was likely a bandit along with the rest, so Carver could have dealt with them appropriately. We don't really know.

What do you all think?

  • Why did they split from Carver's group?

Carver split from their group, presumably joined a scavenger group and worked his way to the top, or formed his own group uniting other scavengers.

Personally I think he'll be civil, as he's been shown to go up to the cabin, talk to Clementine and then leave without any hint of wanting to kill them all. I don't think that's what he's about. He may not have a problem with the Cabin Group, they might have the problem with him.

  • I still don't really know what to think of Carver yet. Most people are assuming that carver is going to be the lead antagonist in season 2 but really nothing has been revealed about this guy other than that he used to part of the cabin group and they are seriously scared of him. I don't think he would be the leader of some massive group if he has only been part of the small cabin group beforehand.

  • i think u will make the choice of who the antagonist is going to be like maybe who ever clem finds if its kenny, lilly, molly or whoever eles it could be youll have to make choice whether to stay and fight beside the cabin group or reunite with your old freind and fight the cabin group or a other force

  • I'm not judging him till I meet him. He may be an okay guy

  • Probably not willing to work with anyone.. hence what they (probably) did to Roman's group. I was shocked as hell when I saw it myself:

Damnit, telltale. Why do you have to do this every time?

  • I expect Carver to be the leader of a powerful group, don't fuck with him or you'll be in deep shit.

  • So basically, he's like George W. Bush?

  • I'm guessing that he'll be something like the main antagonists the comic has had. Batshit insane.

  • That doesn't really mean too much though. We know those guys were at least somewhat concerning, considering the one on that island was holding up Christa and might have done the same to Clem. Plus Roman wasn't exactly the nicest fella ever. Just because it might have been Carver's group that killed those guys on the beach, doesn't mean that they are necessarily bad. Those guys could have deserved what happened to them. They could have attacked first. We don't really know, I guess, but that is entirely what this topic is about. For speculation.

In the comics, (yes I'm one of those guys that references the comics) Rick and his group kill a lot of people when provoked, sometimes in seriously grisly fashions, including ripping apart with hand held weapons an entire group of cannibals, and Rick alone rips apart, essentially with his teeth, a bandit on a highway that tried to rape Carl. Rick also straight up murders one of the prisoners early in the prison storyline that tried to force them to leave by shooting him directly in the head while he wasn't looking, later claiming it happened in a crossfire while they were shooting roamers. However, Rick is more willing to work with other people and groups than just about anyone in the series.

It could be that Carver is similar, but we are seeing it from the outside so it looks like he might be a horrible person. It's definitely interested me either way.

  • Nate Carver? :D
