TV show=Game?

edited January 2014 in The Walking Dead

In season 1, there's hershel who runs farm and his son was shawn who died by attack,
In TV show, maggie says her step-brother shawn became walker,
and the glenn seems to be the same glenn from the game.

Though in the game shawn was biological son and i don't remember hershel mentioning about any daughters, (right? I don't remember all the details)

Except some details, I guess TV show and the game is related.

If daryl or rick show up in the game even for just seconds, it'd be hilarious.

Telltale's TWD game is not canon with either the comic or the TV show, and Telltale have stated as such in the past.

There's another Walking Dead game, Survival Instinct, which is a prequel to the TV show, but Telltale had nothing to do with it.

  • Hershel told Shaun to check on his sisters when they drove back from the van, and since there was light in the window on the second floor i assume they were probably resting there and didn't have the chance to meet Lee?

  • I thought the game was canon to the comic, just the character Lilly wasnt.

  • Kevin Bruner's since said that it isn't canon with anything except itself, and since he's the co-owner of Telltale, I'd go with that. ;)

I just pulled this from the steam page > The Walking Dead is a five-part game series set in the same universe as Robert Kirkman’s award-winning comic book series < ...I think it's canon

From the mouth of Kevin Bruner, co-owner of Telltale Games:

My canon comment was supposed to be about The Wolf Among Us (which IS canon in the Fables universe), not The Walking Dead, which is obviously NOT canon.

    So there. :p

MAN I dislike this whole 'nested comment' thing. [/personalopinion]

What's the context of that quote? On its own, it makes no sense, given that there isn't anything 'obvious' about the game not being canon and plenty that suggests it is canon, such as character overlap.

I'm thinking there's a communication mix-up here somewhere, especially since everything I've heard outside of that quote suggested the game was canon to the comic and not the TV show but certainly not supposed to be entirely its own continuity.

  • Yeah I really hate it too in comparison to good old fashioned quote boxes. Maybe you could make a suggestion? ;)

  • The game was originally meant to be canon to the comics, but Kirkman wrote a story about Lily and his word is law as far as canon goes, so now the game is separate from the comics.

  • The Lily he wrote about in the novel wasn't the same Lily from the Game. He pretty much confirmed it himself, which is why they had to change the name of the trophy/achievement from "Woodbury Bound" to "What now?"
Nevertheless, both seasons are still placed in the same universe as the comics.

  • Eh, two different Lilys doesn't make it not canon in my opinion. They say it's not, but it's obvious they meant for it to be, with the references to Glenn, Hershel, and Lily(which was made non-canon by the book you mentioned).

Well, it's technically not canon since it's been stated to not be, but I still consider it canon because of the references.

Couldn't find the quote either, but a text search gave me this, from Dan Connors:

Well the game will be in canon and we are always looking for ways to connect to the Comic and Show but haven't found the right fit yet. There will be season one characters in season 2 to but to say more would be a spoiler

To me, that heavily implies the quote Darth Mardsen posted must be taken out of context. Unless Kevin Bruner and Dan Connor are in disagreement.

The TV show is canon to the comics. The game is theoretical canon to the comics and the show, but due to legal therms theiy can't oficialy say that. Anyway Scott Gimple (tv show producer) said at Comic Con that he will introduce some parts of the game in the TV Show (like parts of Macon etc.)

  • True, but there was a video of "The Talking Dead" where Robert Kirkman said himself that the first season took place within the same universe of the comic. I don't remember which episode it was though.

Well yeah, that's kinda the point. Their initial intention was for her to be the comic Lily, but Kirkman vetoed it.

  • The TV show definatly isnt canon to the comics, there isnt two Ricks, two Carls etc.

It is more a repeat of the story but theyve changed so much its hardly the same anyway.

  • The TV show isn't canon to the comics. They're separate continuities. Just because the TV show says something is true doesn't mean its true for the comic and vice versa.

I'm not sure of the legalities, but my understanding is they bought the rights to turn the comic into a game but not the TV show, meaning the game is set in the comic's continuity. Not that that seems likely to have a great deal of impact, since Clem appears to be heading well away from anywhere you'd spot Rick Grimes and pals.
