I rooted for him, right up until he pulled that hatchet out of the doorway. I don't talk to my games often, but I actually shouted, "God damnit, Ben!" at the screen.
You know funnily enough, him taking the hatchet from the door was the biggest break in immersion for me my entire playthrough. When Ben came with that hatchet I was thinking "Oh, good job telltale, you made a continuity error, Kenny put the hatchet in the door handle."
It actually didnt even occur to me that Ben could have been THAT stupid until he told me he took from the door.
Well why does everybody hate Chris? No no jk. I guess allot of people hate him because he's the reason why Ken lost his family and the reason why Carly went cray cray and shot the news reporter girl.
Because what kind of asshole deicides to tell the man he killed his whole family when there trapped in a little room with tons of zombies in the hall. That's why I hate been. OH ya and he got carly killed lets be honest carly and lee had a connection I was about to score and ben screwed me.
Ben screwed up... a lot... and often. Largely because he is a meek teenager who is completely overwhelmed by his surroundings. He isn't even a beta male, Kenny is the beta male and he is Kenny's whipping boy for much of the story.
The most positive thing he brings to the team is he teaches them that "the bite doesn't do it". After that it was down hill from there. He's really just unlucky, makes foolish mistakes, and doesn't communicate with the group. Honestly had he brought up the fact that he has been in contact with the bandits and what they wanted he would have saved himself and the group a huge headache. Not that it means the group wouldn't of split up anyways, but still.
That's true to. I wasn't a member then just a lurker but the "I'm going to kill Ben!!" threads and post exploded when Lilly killed her, and people found out Ben was the one who was supplying the bandits with meds.
I don't hate Ben. I hate it when he screws up, but I don't hate him for it, because I know that he always means well, and it just doesn't turn to his favor, unfortunately. I think it's pretty fucked up when someone asks you to kill them, and it kind of got to me that this kid was asking me to basically kill him, to end his life; I couldn't do it.
Or maybe Ben could tell us what he's doing so we don't get into a situation that costs half the group their lives? That'd be nice.
Despite the fact that he was keeping the bandits off the group's back, he never told anyone. He was stealing from the very same group of people that took him in a little over a week earlier. If he had just said something, the group could have gotten away from the motel BEFORE there was any attack, and Carley/Doug, Katjaa, and Duck would all be alive, as well as Lilly not having to leave/be left behind.
If it wasn't for Ben keeping the bandits away for long, the'd all have died back at the motor inn. He was just trying to help all along, despi… morete the fact that he had literally lost everyone he truly knew and never had too see them since the beginning. So maybe take it easy on him?
Because what kind of asshole deicides to tell the man he killed his whole family when there trapped in a little room with tons of zombies in t… morehe hall. That's why I hate been. OH ya and he got carly killed lets be honest carly and lee had a connection I was about to score and ben screwed me.
Cant blame Carly/Doug's death on Ben, that was Lilly handling the situation poorly. Ben's death wasnt really his fault, the railing would have collapsed regardless of who jumped across last. Katjaa made her own choice. Kenny made his own choice as well.
Brie and Chuck's deaths are very much Ben's fault. Duck is pretty much Ben's fault, still people go on about how its entirely Ben's fault, but it wasnt him attacking the Motor Inn. Brie's death was directly due to Ben releasing the horde onto them and Chuck's was due to Ben's negligence. Supplying the bandits is at worst indirectly causing Duck's death, you can only trace blame back so far. Its like saying Duck's death was Kenny's fault for not helping to save Shawn, which caused them to get kicked off of the farm.
There's a character like Ben in so many zombie/apocalypse stories. He means well most of the time but he just screws up. Remember he's supposed to be a kid so he's completely out of his element and probably doesn't have a single clue what to do or what he should do. Guys like him are a plot device too though. "Oh how do we get them out of this motel? Ben made a deal with bandits." "How do the zombies get into the school? Ben took the hatchet," etc... It causes enough "ohhh damn" moments but you just have to shake your head sometimes at him. Poor guy. He never had a chance.

Never saw this scene. I wonder how someone could waste time to save his life when this whiny little backstabber - who is indirectly the murderer of three / four group members - begs him to let him die.
When he has a go at Kenny because he never even got to see his family as he lost them all, you can't help but feel for poor Ben. Hes had it hard.

He should have been banished to take his chances on his own, the groups resources would have been better spent on someone who wasn't a complete waste of space.
I disliked him quite early and his continual mistakes just kept piling up, until that time when he almost got Clementine killed after which he was dead to me.
I didn't hate him in the sense that I felt the need to personally kill him, but I would have appreciated the option to ask him to go his own way.
That's apparently exactly what happened. When TT was testing episode 4, they found that when it came to the Ben choice, almost all the testers chose to save Ben so TT rewrote some of the story to make people hate Ben and thus be more likely to let him die.
I pitied Ben, but boy did I hate him. Even after I was willing to move on from the obvious mistake of keeping the deal with the bandits a secr… moreet, every one of Ben's actions in episode 4 were the writers literally going out of their way to make you hate him.
Ben had contributed to group that's what people overlook. Ben gave the bandits supplies for the release of his friend and when he had found out that the bandits didn't actually have his friend, they had threatened to attack the group which could also mean they were indeed planning an attack on the group but wanted the keep the deal going with Ben.
Because he's the most human character of the bunch, aside from Doug. And also, I didn't want to become like Crawford, throwing out all liabilities... Fuck that, man. That's like saying Lee was responsible for killing Carley (or Doug if you're a jerk, and saved her). He just made a call, trying to save someone. Turns out, his call was worse than we'd have thought. It's not like Ben shoved the fucking walker on Duck. If he did, I'd have wished him to have a more painful death.
Never saw this scene. I wonder how someone could waste time to save his life when this whiny little backstabber - who is indirectly the murderer of three / four group members - begs him to let him die.
Yeah, he screwed up pretty badly a lot of times.. but he knew what was happening. He was just trying to help, but was failing miserably at it. I don't blame him for that.. I understand him and he redeemed himself for me when he explained the situation to Kenny. He was just unlucky, but to me he wasn't much of an idiot.
Yeah, that was a real mistake. He should have at least told someone, but you can't really blame him for fearing for his own ass. He thought he was right, but he thought wrong - he was only human after all. Lee himself made quite some mistakes throughout the whole story. It just happened...
Or maybe Ben could tell us what he's doing so we don't get into a situation that costs half the group their lives? That'd be nice.

Yeah, he sure did his part, what with stealing from the people who saved him hardly a week ago. Just because the bandits didn't attack doesn't mean that this is a positive thing. If he'd said something to the group, the entire mess with the raid could have been avoided. But no. And look at what happened tot he group AFTER that raid.
That's totallty NOT the same. Lee had to make a quick decision within seconds, being only able to save one life (Thanks for calling me a jerk, btw), but Ben had days if not even weeks to make a decision, and he decided to betray the people who saved his life, steal from them and don't tell them a word about it or warn them that there are Bandits nearby who are a possible threat. This alone would have been reason enough to let him die, but the fact that the consequences of his actions killed three people and that he sweared he didn't have to do anything with any of what happened (which lead to Carley's / Doug's death) made it so much worse.
He may be the most human character (if you define "humanity" by the number of mistakes someone makes and how big a risk he is), but in a already fucked up world - if you want to survive - he is a person you REALLY don't want to have with you.

Well explaining the situation to Kenny could of waited at least until we got out of Crawford. Who tells someone something like that in a life or death situation? He was pretty dumb and I agree that he was trying to help but countless times he was a coward and an idiot. I'm not saying I didn't like or feel for the kid but he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

i just wanted to bring up that some people think that kenny might have saved ben but remember you can kill ben by leaving him at crawford. anyway most ppl hate ben cause if he didnt give the bandits supplies carley/doug would be alive and lilly wouldnt have left

"Ben is young and stupid"
*Lilly. Carley was the one who got shot.

Because Carley died because of him.

I really liked Ben. Felt sorry for him and respected that he tried to atone for his mistakes. Dropped him anyway, though.
It might have something to do with this...

Woulda've you just put a bullet in his head?
Believe it or not, I thought the hatchet was a reused model. Until Lee asked Ben where he had gotten that hatchet, then I was: "Oh shit..."
Never saw this scene. I wonder how someone could waste time to save his life when this whiny little backstabber - who is indirectly the murderer of three / four group members - begs him to let him die.
Because he is stupid
Well what do you mean by it? What is your personal opinion on Ben, you can't say he wasn't an idiot.
Applause to you sir.

Nick is the new Ben

Actually Carley died because Lilly shot her. Blame her and her happy trigger finger.
Ben had contributed to group that's what people overlook. I love Ben. He's one of my favorite characters... Him, Doug, Nate, Larry, and Wyatt, in no particular order.
I agree. Hatable, but likable at the same time. I support my decision to save him over Pete whole-heatedly.
Yeah, he screwed up pretty badly a lot of times.. but he knew what was happening. He was just trying to help, but was failing miserably at it. I don't blame him for that.. tbh, I didn't feel like that decision was who to save, it was more like: who do you go to for whatever reason
I went to Pete because I felt like he was the leader and knew what he was doing and I thought that Nick would follow.
I liked Ben.
I did not hate Ben, i stood up for him and tried to make him a productive member of the group. But he is a natural cowardly screw up.
i just wanted to bring up that some people think that kenny might have saved ben but remember you can kill ben by leaving him at crawford. anyway most ppl hate ben cause if he didnt give the bandits supplies carley/doug would be alive and lilly wouldnt have left
