RPG games came from board game's (more popular are the likes of Dungeons and Dragons or Wasteland) set of rules, but have evolved in their own direction through video games, some games completely obey these rules like Wasteland (the game) or Baldur's Gate (which is actually set in D&D world). But many others are different, an RPG is either a first person game, third person game or it isometric. RPGs mostly tend to be open world, although that is not always the case. In RPGs few things set it apart from action games, statistics of your character(s) are important, you develop your character by gaining new and better loot and getting experience so you can improve your character(s) stats. Also in RPGs you can talk to different NPC, help them or not, you can easily kill almost everyone you meet (for example in Fallout), and these games you also make important choices that can shape people and the world around you. Hope I gave a good definition of RPGs by my own words? Someone correct me if I got something wrong.
I loved them in 1996 and I still do. Broken Sword was the first game I played on my win95 computer, so it has a special place in my heart. Its a classic point and click adventure with quite difficult puzzles and an interesting story. If you like that kind of adventures it is a must have. If you are more into shooters you may think its boring.
After much deliberation amongst myself and other personalities, I would have to say my favorite game in all of gaming history ... Chrono Trigger. A bit surprised it hasn't been mentioned, that or I'm too old.
Honorable mentions include: The last of Us, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Cross, Shadow of the Colossus, Fallout 3, Uncharted (all), Legend of Zelda Oot and Alttp, Dark Souls, Earthbound, Shining Force, Mega Man X4, Phantasy Star 4, Tex Murphy: Pandora Directive, Zero Escape: 999, The Walking Dead, and a little gem called Maniac Mansion.
There are many other games I have loved over the years, but this consists of my all time favorites (may have left out a few) but having to choose one I pick Chrono Trigger. It has everything I could want in a game playing this game goes beyond nostalgia for me, it's one of those games people can't believe how good it is. I remember back when the PS2 was a new system and I got all my friends hooked to this SNES classic. if you ever have a chance, play this game, you will not regret it.
I thought about Adding Fahrenheit to this list, but the second half ruined it for me. The first half was pretty amazing. It gave you the feeling that you can really change the story with your desicions, but that was latr destroyed by the several but all stupid endings.
PC- the longest journey
PS1- the legend of dragoon and the spyro series
PS2- GTA vice city
Gamecube- legend of zelda- wind waker and super mario sunshine
PS3- bayonetta and flower from the journey collection
3DS- phoenix wright- dual destinies (but any phoenix wright game would do lol) though i hate they baby you too much
there are plenty others but i'm basing my list off of games i either played over and over again (i've excluded games on systems before PS1's release because i didn't feel like adding them lol) and/or had a spectacular storyline that drew me into its world.
you'll be buying your PS3 this year and yet you're recommending games on it and that they get the system? did you use an emulator to play them then decided to get the system?
You have to buy ps3 amazing games the last of us very amazing game must play, silent hill downpour, uncharted series, and also very amazing games ...i buy playstation 3 in april 2014 in my opinion you have to buy ps3 ...
Think mine has to be System Shock 2, it was just so well done. Played it recently and am amazed at how well it ages.
Other mentions aside from TWD:
Deus Ex.
Joust-for such a simple game it is amazing.
Fallout 1, 2.
Homeworld.
Stalker COP - I prefer it with Misery, just an awesome mod.
No particular order but, Fallout 3, The Last of Us, TTG Walking Dead, GTA IV, and Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword. Close runners up include … moreDragon Age: Origins, Dayz mod, KoToR, Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted, Resistance: Fall of Man/2, CoD4/WaW, and Socom: Combined Assault. It's really difficult for me to narrow shooters down, because Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was a lot of fun, and MAG was a lot of fun too. The entire PS2 Socom series was also excellent. Then Rise of Nations could make the list, and even the original Company of Heroes. Tough to choose a definitive favorite.

Eh, yeah... That's not what i meant.. You speak English and that is more important, everything I wrote regarding RPGs doesn't have anything to do with both English language or England as a country. And if we are both not from England that doesn't automatically mean we are countryman (hehe that reminded me of one of the jokes). Besides pre-o-level 2? Isn't that pre-school? Don't you think you are a little too young to be posting here or even playing TWD at all?

Ah.. Sorry mate. Here on the Balkans and Eastern Europe the school system is still mostly socialist/communist so I am not acquainted with how it goes on the West, the names are obviously different.

Bioshock (all), The Walking Dead (both TTG series 1 and 2 and survival instinct), Dead Island (and Riptide), The Last of us, Uncharted (all 3), COD: MW3,Ghosts or Black ops 2, The Wolf Amoung us, Ghost Recon Future soldier and Grand theft auto 5.
In terms of story, well, I consider Telltale's The Walking Dead to literally be the best story ever written of any media. It has better writing and story than any book, TV show, or movie that I've ever seen or read.
As an actual game, I'd have to say Bastion. It had an amazing plot and narrative, a beautiful art style, and it was just an overall awesome game. I think I've played the whole thing through about 8 times.
Also, I'd give honorable mention to Hotline Miami, because once more, awesome gameplay, narrative/plot, artstyle, but it's a 4-5 hour game. So... There's that. Maybe the sequel will be a bit longer.
And then games that were good, but not necessarily my top three would include, for story, the Bioshock Series, Alan Wake, Assassin's' Creed Franchise, The Wolf Among Us(so far), Broken Age(so far), and possibly Fahrenheit.
As for gameplay, State of Decay and.... Well, I don't really play games for gameplay and mechanics and stuff like that, I mainly like games for story.
Yes! I loved Alan Wake, that was an awesome game. I heard somewhere that the guy who directed Bright Falls(the miniseries for it on youtube) wanted to do an Alan Wake TV show, which would be awesome. I hope that Alan Wake 2 will be on PC though, because I heard that it took them quite a while to bring the first one to the PC, and I haven't got an Xbox, or any console actually.

Silent Hill 2 is much better. First part has Minecraft's graphic, is silly and boring.
I thought about Adding Fahrenheit to this list, but the second half ruined it for me. The first half was pretty amazing. It gave you the feeling that you can really change the story with your desicions, but that was latr destroyed by the several but all stupid endings.
I love them all.
A no brainer for me. Assassins Creed 2 restored my love of video games.
