Is TWD An Interactive Movie?

edited February 2014 in The Walking Dead

I know this is something that is discussed a lot but today my friend said he didn't like TWD game anymore because he "realized that it was just an interactive movie with dead-end choices" but to me if you are required to play something and if you can get a game over then it's a game, and he replied with "A game requires effort TWD doesn't" so what do you guys think? Is TWD an interactive movie or would you consider it a game?

It is sort of to some peoples interpretation. Though with the puzzles and given how choice does effect several things I'd say no.

Beyond two souls is a good example of something that is too much like a movie, you have no influence over anything except the ending and a lot of the interactions just feel pointless and boring. Plus compared to the walking dead the story is pretty terrible.

  • I'd have to say it is more like a movie than the majority of todays games, but that isn't a bad thing.

I'd choose a game like TWD over most (all?) FPS any day.

  • TWD is a game whether you like it or not.

  • Yeah Beyond was a MAJOR disappointment for me, fairly terrible story, no choices not even any form of game over(i know heavy rain had no game over but i at least enjoyed its story) i completely agree with you on that it is a game,i was unable to convince my friend though.

But, in all seriousness, I consider it a game. Interactive movies is actually a video game genre as far as I know(think).

  • Lol nice gif are you sure that interactive movie is a genre?

  • It's from one of Flimsii's videos on YouTube. And yeah, I think so. I know that Beyond is pretty much an interactive movie.

So, according to the guy you quoted from, TWD doesn't require effort, so therefore, it is not a game.

    Bull. Shit.

Effort isn't just mashing a button or doing parkor jumping puzzles, TWD requires a large amount of mental effort to be able to make the moral choices in the game. None of you can tell me that you had no trouble going through some of the scenarios in the game.

  • Yeah, I spent ages wondering if i did the right thing and ages thinking i was going to regret what i did.

  • I was kinda disappointed at the linearity of S2 Ep 1 and the fact that there was an immense timeskip and everyone that was affected by the previous choices (Omid and Christa, XD) was almost immediately cast away, except for Clem who we actually control. I still have some high hopes though, moreso for The Wolf Among Us, but still.

  • IMO its more of an interactive story than game. If it wasn't for the great story the puzzles would seem pointless.

  • And then you later realized that none of your choices impacted much.

Not a game. Not even close.

  • So are you telling me that your friend was having the time of his life playing TWD but now hates it because some idiots from 4chan brainwashed him into believing the game is not a game anymore?

  • Get out

  • I wouldn't say he hates it he just refuses to play it, dunno if he's ever heard of 4chan i know i sure haven't but they could have been what caused him to dislike it.

  • I think 'interactive movie' is actually a pretty decent label for games like Heavy Rain and such, but I don't mean that in a negative fashion. I mean it in the same realm as some games are 'visual novels'. I'm not insulting those games by saying they're novels and not games, but simply referring to a good classification of the genre it envelops.

It's not an official genre, but I still think its an accurate label. The problem is people use the term as an insult or in a negative tone when they say 'interactive movie'.

  • Games are "interactive entertainment" since the walking dead is highly interactive and entertaining, i would say that counts. Its a story based game were your choices change the world around you, you dont change the destination, you change the journey to it.

  • Well, there goes my theory. Someone below already said it's a Graphic Adventure Game. Though, I don't understand why people hate these kinds of games. Not everything is shooting, racing, and other mainstream stuff. Which is why I find myself loving it, it's so unique and brings a whole new experience to gamers.

  • I too love these types of games if they're done right, which the walking dead is.

  • TWD is... ART!

  • Every game is linearto some point. What's important is if it's immersive and entertaining. That's the whole point in games

A video game is basically anything that's interactive. So therefore, it's a game. Also, it does have puzzles, and the QTE sections in S2E1 are pretty good, so it's not like it's just an interactive movie, unlike something like Beyond: Two Souls where you can literally not even push any buttons a lot of the time and just win anyway.

  • I love graphic adventure games. Calling TWD one is an insult to graphic adventure games. Graphic adventure games include puzzles that require the usage of more than 3 brain cells.

  • You don't shoot people alot, and when you do it's just limited sniping of Zombies for a few moments before the next scene.
There's no real inventory, and it's cutscene after cutscene..
Due to Telltale's design the battles are very repetitive. Press an Arrow Key to dodge, Click something to hit.
Some of the choices are limited in design, and in the end it feels like it doesn't matter. Why save Carley or Doug if they'll end up dead anyway?
Choosing Pete or Nick doesn't make much impact. except your opening scene.

What does matter and holds all these aspects together is the story. The story is the single strongest element in the entire game. So regardless of whether people call it a video game or an interactive story, keep this in mind. If it's an interactive story they're essentially complimenting the game's story for transcending all of it's gaming aspects. If it's a video game, the story alone has won awards.

  • Yes, I consider it mostly as interactive movie, but I like interactive movies!

  • If I can't play it on a VHS player or DVD player, it's not a movie.
