Why all the hate on Epsiode 2?

edited February 2014 in The Wolf Among Us

I can understand why some people may be disappointed after the long wait, it didn't seem like the episode was any longer (it was actually shorter than I would have wanted) and there were limited action segments.

But honestly, I enjoyed this episode a ton! I'm currently recording my walkthrough for Episode 2 being the meanest Bigby I can be (after my canon walkthrough, where I be pretty nice while sometimes making some mean decisions)!

It had great character development, some excellent story segments, and a few great reveals!

Even though by the end, the plot hasn't moved forward to much, I still really enjoyed the episode and I'm excited to see what Telltale comes up with next!

  • I think it's the fact that it could have been better. The long wait didn't help (even though we all should know better than to blame Telltale for delays they can't control).

  • We're in no position to state that the delays were out of their control, since we know next to nothing about the cause. For all we know, the cause of the delay was something easily avoided.

  • *****SPOILERS AHEAD******

Episode 2 was a major disappointment to me for three reasons. Number 1 it's really short. Number 2 it feels like there is no real choice path like in the previous episode (and previous choices don't seem to matter at all). Number 3 the story feels very disconnected, Snow White just turning up to be alive in the prologue? That's a narrative kick in the balls and not in a good way. I was taking for granted that Snow would be coming back one way or the other because of the comics, but still, I was expecting her death to be something a little more dramatic.
The whole Lily thing seems rather stupid and artificial... it just makes no sense to conjure up a story like that.

Episode 1 was about a killer who ferociously and relentlessly took out two very likable characters to which you and your main character immediately related, making the story very personal and intense. Episode 2 shits on that premise by changing the cards on the table, now one of the corpses turns out to be Ms Who-gives-a-shit-about, Faith's story is put in the freezer, and Snow is actually perfectly fine -but WAIT! she may actually STILL be in danger (lol, after supposedly seeing her beheaded one episode ago, this ain't gonna work anymore bud, emotions don't have an on/off switch you can play with).

All in all, I'm thoroughly convinced they scrapped the original episode 2 and came out with this one for one reason or the other, be it that people figured out the true villain and they had to change the story, be it that they had problems with the license by showing Snow's death... I don't know, but I think it's very clear that this episode doesn't live up to Telltale's standards of storytelling.

  • I loved EPISODE 2 MUCH MUCH! Episode 1 loved it. Episode 2 LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVEDD IT.

  • You shouldn't judge it before the entire mystery is solved. Faith is mentioned lots, perhaps you missed it. Choices don't need to be taken into account every second in each ep

  • I don't think they changed it as much as you think they did. I think the overall plot proceeded as intended, but it does feel like they cut swathes of the episode due to script changes further down the road, making this episode seem stitched together.

  • Possible, and yet no writer worth their salt would do something so incredibly awkward as to kill off a major character in a climax like ep.1's ending, and then have her come back to life like nothing happened at the start of the next episode.

If you think about it, why does it have to be Snow that apparently dies (other than to make a stupid cliffhanger)? Could have been any random prostitute. Episode 1 ends with the discovery of yet another victim, this is a noir after all. Episode 2 you find out the prostitute is lily and apparently Crane killed her. Same story, no awkwardness.

There is really no narrative reason to build up a big tension like Snow's death and then deflate it 5 minutes later just for the hell of it. Only time something like this happens is when a story is retconned.

  • I doubt that a delay that could have been easily avoided took three months to figure out. It doesn't matter either way: Telltale didn't want the delay, they said so themselves, so it's hard on them and frustrates them as much as the fans.

To keep her dead would be a complete slap to the face to fans of the comic, especially since they are making a prequel. Hardly a narrative "kick to the balls"; it was smart, because it's the only way to explain how she lived without all the "resurrection spell" bullshit or other cliché and predicable things, unless, of course, you can give a better explanation?

  • My theory is that Crane's a copycat. Just the fact that the ribbon wasn't in the mouth is one sign. But I am sure there's a way deeper explanation. I hope there is.

  • After watching someone else do a playthrough I now completely understand the hate. I defended the issue with it being on the short side since telltale has done that before with one of the walking dead episodes.
But what I dont defend is how interactivity has now been completely stripped from the game. Even though choices never really mattered much in the end with walking dead it at least changed the journey making the experience more immersive. In this episode you get the same EXACT replies no matter which dialogue option you select and same thing with the few "choices" you get.
This could have instead been released as a animated episode and it would still be the same.

This is the main problem alot of us had with jurassic park as well but at least there were some puzzles there and a few different replies.

If this is what we get after months of delay then that proves that they just cannot handle workload of developing two games at same time.

  • @Kryik Then why even make it a game when the same could be achieved by releasing it as a video? It is supposed to be interactive but not even your dialogue choices changes their reply. When they give the same response no matter what you say then that is going to ruin immersion. Even people who played as a silent character had the same exact replies and outcome.
