If by some absolutely unimaginable occurrence in which there is a zombie outbreak (as Robert Kirkman illustrates it), it likely wouldn't result in the breakdown of government and civilization in Western society we tend to see in popular media. Kirkman seems to spare the general ecosystem of the same fate that came on humans. We don't see zombie-fied cows or apple trees or anything. Just on a practical level, governments would probably see something like that coming way before it happened. Allowing a zombie outbreak to happen would almost be like allowing black plague sneak back up on us.

    But if it did...

Mass panic would be the norm and some parts would be screwed and sent back in time 500 years, yes. But overall, modern society wouldn't totally collapse and vanish. Some major population centers would likely be vaporized to prevent mass outbreak and to maintain asset control. Asset in this case being acreage. This is how the military thinks.

Command and control centers would emerge and critical infrastructure would be protected and maintained. Sort of like the compounds we see in some stories like the Walking Dead. Scientists and engineers would be treated like gold. If the grid did go down, it probably wouldn't stay down for long. There are alot of smart people in the world that could re-establish the automation and power needed for government to work rather easily.

In Kirkmans world, how to deal with death is a complicated issue, though. But again, humans would figure it out. Somebody would likely have to come up with some kind of automated device that servers the spinal cord upon death and thus disables motor function. Overtime, i think that kind of device would be placed on infants at birth.

  • Even adults cant have a gun. only police officers, guards and Millitary can have guns

  • Are you sure NOONE except military and police is allowed to own a gun?

Not even with a weapon's license?

'Cause then I'd be curious too. What country do you live in?

  • I Live in Pakistan. I don't like this country, there are no original games for PC in this country anymore, every console is second hand, very expensive. I haven't seen anyone keeping guns. no wait only some people have guns, people from the villages, they hunt an animal named miro.

  • A friend of mine had a dream about the Zombie Apocalypse. He said I accidentally shot him in the neck when trying to kill some zombies .... he died.

  • How are you posting on this site? I thought internet access is heavily restricted or limited in Pakistan.

  • It's all dependant on how it starts isn't it? Looking at the news - small things like snow storms or freak hail storms lock down areas. In Kirkman's apocalypse everyone is infected so if that happened without many people being aware of it at first then a "contagious" spread could get quite far before it's noticed, though it's hard to imagine any type of contagion spreading without showing signs of anything but mind you zombies aren't a real possibility anyhow.

For a breakdown of civilisation to occur with zombies that move that slow it would have to be so wide spread when it starts that it becomes difficult to co-ordinate an effective attack. We know that in mass panic situations people die even though it wasn't even that bad which just increases zombie numbers, depending how bad it is things like suicide would probably create new areas of infection in what was considered safe areas. I know the military is well trained, one could almost say brainwashed to continue doing their duty but I wonder what would happen if the military cannot protect the immediate families of soldiers. I just think that if it got to a bad enough spot even trained soldiers might leave their posts which becomes a real problem if the chain of communication ever broke down.

To be honest I can't ever see anyone willingly agreeing to wear any automated device that can kill them. Things like that will cause resistance which just never ends (we see it in history over and over).

As for zombified animals or affected ecosystem it's a bit more complex. Most virus's or bacteria that affect humans cannot affect animals though if the TV show is to be believed it's cross species which has more pressing concern that it could be a chimera virus. Either way animals are always expecting death; it's why herbivores constantly survey their surroundings, why carnivores constantly mark their territory, they also have better senses of smell and hearing. Seems perfectly logical that you don't see some zombie moose walking about but I agree that commercial farms would have some zombie cows going about their day. I kinda find it irritating that a zombie manages to get a bird; do you know how hard they are to catch with your bare hands when you aren't a lumbering pile of meat?

We live in a world that tries to minimise waste in industry relying on things like just in time methods to maximise profits. I agree that no government would allow something like a zombie outbreak or even a plague to occur even resorting to drastic measures to neutralize the threat. At the same time the systems we have created can become our biggest enemy in times of crisis. Where I live we had a petrol tanker driver strike which was publicly said won't be longer than three days to ensure that business' aren't affected. By the end of that day every single petrol station within about 50 km of where I live had nothing left. By day three transportation of goods was starting to suffer all due to peoples panic. It was strange to think of hurricane katrina in America. That organisations with as many plans and intelligent people couldn't get the basics to the affected. That day showed me two things; one - that America which I thought was a strong country in terms of it's ability to deal with difficult situations was in fact a house of cards with the right card tearing everything down and two - if a country like America with it's resources and capability isn't able to cope than what chance do the rest of us.

If you want to kill walkers so bad, why don´t you go buy a rifle or shotgun and go hunting wolves or bears? They also try to eat you, like walkers.

  • man a zombie apocalpyse would be horrorfying. i always have nightmares of meteor strikes, tsunamis, armageddons and just recently have been experiencing zombie nightmares. but its dawn of the dead or 28 days later zombies and its INSANE. i meanit feels so genuine that when i wake up its like thank god im outa there but at the same time im sad because i left the people who were with me behind and i want to finish the story.i want to write down everydream ihave so iwont forget them

  • Humanity woud likely die off eventually. Food would go rotten, and not every group would have someone who could grow crops. Most of the population would die before the zombies die off. If anyone would be left, they wouldn't be able to repopulate the planet. It would take decades.

  • Reminds me of a show I watched called American Blackout. It's about what might happen if the United States suffered a nation-wide blackout. A lot like the Walking Dead, but without zombies and the government is still intact.

  • No, I don´t find it rude, but it is stupid when people think that it would be cool, but when you´re on that situation it is not so cool anymore.

  • Consumer goods like fuel and grocery stores would be a problem that governments couldn't tackle, yes. Supplying an entire population of people would be impossible. But that would be a tipping point that we probably wouldn't ever get to.

In order to maintain a normal working society after some kind of zombie apocalypse, I think they would have to come up with some kind of solution with death, considering everyone has the virus (or whatever it is) and upon death they become walking bio-hazards. The solution is likely going to be draconian in some way, so i think some kind of device that renders the dead body useless to the virus would emerge.
