Joel is much less psychotic/sociopathic than Nate, I'd go so far as to say Joel is not even close to being psychotic/sociopathic. And he keeps people he cares about safe (i.e. Ellie, his brother Tommy, and probably all those people back at the place in the end.)
Joel did what he felt was justified, he was basically humanity's Judge, witnessing how far humanity will go to survive. Trust me when I say that when I saw what Joel did, I was sort of happy. To see so much fucked up shit, why should humanity deserve to get back on its feet?

A psychopath is someone who is compeled to kill, or otherwise harm others for whatever reason.
Joel fits none of those.

Besides I don't see what Nate did as that bad. Those people in the Pit Stop shot at him unprovoked. They were prepared to kill Nate and Russel without even knowing for certain who they were.
If that had happened to me, I would have been so pissed off at being shot at for no reason and with no warning I would've done the same.

They obviously could have killed Russel with that first shot. If I remember correctly, they hit the car door, the definitely missed Russel. The car wasn't moving. It is much more likely that was a warning shot, than a killing shot.
I said the first shot. They didn't LEAVE after the first shot when Russel wasn't moving whatsoever. He could have hit him but didn't. Instead of leaving they went to attack.
