My God. LucasArts' re-release plan is subtle GENIUS. (SOMI)

edited September 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
I was thinking about the LucasArts rereleases that hit Steam today, and it hit me. The one thing I couldn't figure out about the Secret of Monkey Island remake was what they were going to do with the LOOM plug. Nobody'd expect a general audience to even know that LOOM existed at this point, so the joke would go nowhere, right? And then they go and re-release the damn game a week ahead of Secret, so not only is the joke current again, it even serves the original purpose of blatantly plugging a LA adventure game that could use some sales.

LucasArts, I salute you.

Who cares? All I want is for them to make a LOOM movie adaption. With the two planned sequels in it. Now THAT would be art.

It is pretty devious, isn't it? Especially for Steam users, who have been seeing Loom's logo on the splash page all day, so they'll recognize it when they see it mentioned in the SE.

I can even picture some people being miffed by it, thinking it's a real advertisement and not really getting the joke :p

On all of the product pages for the classic LucasArts games on Steam, the listed features are the features listed on each respective game's original box. I wonder if anyone's going to be miffed that "high-resolution 3D landscapes" means something different today than it did 20 years ago.

I still don't understand what it was intended to mean then.

Back in the day, 3D just meant that the player character could walk in front of and behind other objects on screen. High-resolution meant, well, the highest possible resolution a then-state-of-the-art computer could display: 320X240.

Are these rereleases only going to be available through Steam?

The wording of the press release SOUNDS as though the remake of Secret of Monkey Island will be on other digital download platforms, but the plain modern PC ports of the old LucasArts adventures are Steam Exclusive. That's just how I read it, though.

Here is the release I'm talking about, by the way:

    http://www.lucasarts.com/company/vip/catalog/lec_backcatalog_2009.pdf

The parts that bring me to my conclusion, specifically:

"In this first round of releases, ten fan-favorite LucasArts PC games will be made
available Wednesday, July 8 on Steam®, Valve Corporation's delivery and management platform for the PC."

"The Monkey Island celebration continues on July 15 when LucasArts publishes The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition"

    ...

"The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition will be made available on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PC via Steam and other online distribution channels."

What if one of those other online distribution channels was right here at Telltale? :D

Planned sequels will never be art :p

And the "other online distribution channels" include Direct-2-Drive and the Wii Virtual Console. (NA folks can find Super Star Wars and Super Empire Strikes Back on the Wii Shop Channel. No sign yet of an EU release)

    I second that! ;)

Seeing as you could easily condense the first game into a half hour, give or take, I'd say putting all three games in one movie would still make it count as art.

My gosh I hope not. 2 and a half gigs is not an easy pill to download.

I played the updated version of SOMI on xbox, i found myself constantly going back to the original version, i though it was much better,
    I miss scumm games
I think the interface/graphics of the adventure game genre hit its peak for Day of the Tentacle,
there have been some great games since but the interface has been going downhill since

I would have pegged it a little bit later with Full Throttle but it was around that time.

(I always found the verbs superfluous.)

I agree. Full Throttle and CMI have the most elegant adventure game controls yet.
