Monkey Island hang when trying to leave beach

When I try and leave the beach area by walking past the courthouse the game hangs. The music will keep playing but everything else locks up and it pings the cpu to max. At which point I have to end the task to kill the game.

I've tried re-installing the game a few times and played through the opening as well as doing varying amounts of things in the beach area before attempting to leave but the result is always the same, the game hangs.

    I have a similar problem ,could you post your systems info (cpu,gpu,os,drivers,etc) in case we have something in common

    CPU: AMD 3200+
    RAM: 1 GB
    GPU: Nvidia 6600 GT
    OS: XP SP3

    Drivers are all up to date. In fact I completely re-installed the machine a few days ago.

    Edit: On a whim I re-downloaded the game and after installing that version I could continue. I downloaded it from a gamershell mirror this time which may have had something to do with it.
