I always set the hint frequency to 0/off. I don't need it, I don't want it, but others might.
Leave it in the game for those who need it or remove it, I don't care for the hint system.
been waiting long enough for this game, id rather be stuck for weeks than get help! (wishing i was stuck ) I felt there were enough hints in the dialogue without the hint system-I had to check a couple of times that it was actually off.
for example: (slight spoiler)
Guybrush says 'This jungle is noisy' after u open the map the 3rd/4th time. I checked after and it was definately off
I find the hints to be pretty jarring overall. I turn them off, and I do wish that we'd be taken to a "set up" screen before the season started like for Season Two of Sam and Max. That really put my options right in front of me before my excitement got the better of me.
It's fine if others want hints. Infocom made "introductory adventures", so I don't see how making the genre more accessible without actually making insanely easy games at the same time is a problem. Everybody wins, except those that DON'T know and have them turned on by default.

yeah happen to me too. Even if the hints are set to 0 guybrush randomly hint the puzzle. It may be a bug or something
I always play adventure games with hints off (no walkthrough or cheating). The longer the better, especially when your stuck and figure it out. It's so gratifying. Sadly I couldn't control myself and beat the game the first night all in one run with a stuck time of 3 hours. Counting down the days for Ep. 2
larys and tmsmyth4 - Same thing happened to me, frequently checked to make sure I wasn't crazy and left the hint system on. I agree with the bug idea
After Guybrush decided to randomly say, "There has to be another way onto the ship-- something more pirate-y" when I had him looking at the swordfish, I went looking through the settings and turned it off. Didn't know it was even there until that.
I imagine that if I ever get so horribly stuck that I'm considering the utter humiliation of going looking for a walk-through that the hint system will be a welcome relief, but until then it's not really necessary. What it is useful to do is to introduce the MI universe to my FPS-obsessed friends or to any really young children. They're more the ones who will benefit.
why 7 people vote for <<I would like to see no hint system in the game>>. i jsut can i understand why don't like it. since they can turn it off what their problem?
Some of the newer Adventure gamers could use a hint system. They aren't accustom to being stuck for long periods of time.

This I agree with, but if hints are set to off they need to be off.
I turned it off, although it's nice to have the option for those who want to use it. It's not doing any harm, so why not keep it?
I'm happy with the idea of a hint system, I just felt that even with it set to 0, Guybrush would occasionally say something for no particular reason after a few failed attempts. maybe a bug, maybe intentional, either way it didnt happen very often and wasnt overly helpful so I wasnt too bothered
There's no option for "It didn't help at all." As I said in another thread, all it seems good for is telling you what you're supposed to do next not how you're supposed to do it. Thus, it just told me everything I already knew. Seems pretty useless to me, and not the kind of hint system I'd like integrated. Others might find things more difficult where such a hint system is perfect, though. In that light, I guess it does its job. I wouldn't say I'd prefer it without hints as some people really need help, but I'd like the ability to turn it off completely and also the ability to give more hints about how to do things rather than what I'm supposed to do next, which is just blatantly obvious to me in the game anyway.

I voted for that option, because even after turning it all the way down I was still getting hints. If that is the "low" option, I would like an "off" option.
For example:
Looking at the map, you get the noisy comment
or
After turning the totems a few times to see all the faces, Guybrush blurted out how it looked like the weathervane
Option F: The hints were useless and provided only the vaguest, most obvious info, so I don't think they mattered one way or the other.
I disagree.. I thought they were extremely helpful. They pointed you in the right direction, without totally giving away what to do. If you need more help than that, then there's little point in playing at all.
The thing that really bothered me with the hint system, is that sometimes when Guybrush is finally giving a hint, you might click by mistake at the same time on something and it'll skip the hint. >,>
It would be better if you had to ask for a hint, rather than him just volunteering one. That way the option is always there if you want it but it doesn't automatically presume you haven't figured it out.

Hmm I might play through it with it on so I can hear all the things he says
I agree, a simple press of H would have been useful. I turned it all the way down and then I got a little stuck and turned it up but then when I didn't know how to trigger the hints I just put it back down again XD Didn't really help... but I worked it out in the end
i turned it on two times and it always told me to do things i already knew i have to do, so it didn't helped me at all. i just didn't know HOW to do these things
I had it on max, and got three hints the entire game, two of which were direct solutions, one of which I couldn't make any sense of and was merely a distraction. So yeah, a bit rubbish all round.
I didn't mind it too much. Most of the time I didn't notice I was getting hints. I got that the map was sounds before Guybrush started sayig 'its noisy', but then I had to keep looking at the map to see which way to go, so he started saying it over and over again!
The only time it was really obvious, and too early to hint, was on the idiol bit. I'd only just started playing around with it and he gave me the solution pretty much.
Then when I was stuck at a couple of bits, there didn't seem to be any helpful hints at all..
I was another who turned it all the way down. For spuds and giggles, I'm gonna play through it again with it turned all the way up to see what happens, cause I'm sure I missed a lot of dialogue.

As i said before this must be a bug or something. I didn't use the hint system but i will if i need to.
I think its a good option for those who want it, but I really wish there was a ways to really turn it completely off for those of us who don't want it. I got the unwanted hint on the idols puzzle, too, and it rather irked me.
As long as you can turn the hint-system off, don't mind if it's there. Actually wanna play the game again with the hints on, to see what kinda of "extra's" you get from the hints.
It would be better if you had to ask for a hint, rather than him just volunteering one. That way the option is always there if you want it but it doesn't automatically presume you haven't figured it out.
Yeah, this is definitely the sort of system I'd want to use.
The odd time I do get stuck, and turn on the hint system, I'm waiting around a few minutes for Guybrush to pipe up, and then another few minutes again if the last hint wasn't particularly helpful.
why 7 people vote for <<I would like to see no hint system in the game>>. i jsut can i understand why don't like it. since they can turn it off what their problem?
Agreed! It's a very sensible option to open the market, and shouldn't spoil anything to experienced players.
After turning the totems a few times to see all the faces, Guybrush blurted out how it looked like the weathervane
...I was really perplexed too. I felt that as kind of a spoiler. This kind of suggestions should really not be given at the lowest level of hints setting.
I know I might be grilled for saying this, but I really miss the hints "system" from Save the World where if you wanted a hint then you had to ask Max.
I felt it was nicer to be able to get a hint when I asked for it, rather than randomly throughout the game. Just because I'm taking my time on a puzzle doesn't necessarily mean I want a hint for it.
By the way, I did end up playing through a small part of Launch of the Screaming Narwhal with the hints on. There was a weird bug at one point, where all of my settings were reset to their default values -_-

Have to say I just love this game

Still, it's an awesome system that should stay in the game, it helped my brother solve it.
buuuut, it wasn't helpful at all. like zip, nada. so I turned it down again.
