    Hi Guybrush, what a name!

There's a sort of flame war about this topic:
    http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8906

If You don't want to read about 200 messages, consider this:

    - Telltale has not announced any local version of TOMI yet.

    - That means that for the moment no one at Telltale is developing italian (or french, spanish, german...) subtitles; please consider that Telltale has done a great job with Monkey Island, but these people doesn't have the resources that Lucasarts had, so is quite obvious that in the first period the only version is the international english.

    - Obviously, no subtitles means also no italian voices.

    - No way to see subtitles made by fans.

    - Considering that TOMI is an episode game, we probably won't have subtitles until the series will be completed (six episodes, six months).

    - Then, in maybe six, seven, eight months (a year?) there is a chanche to see a subtitled version developed by the european distribution channel (like what happened with Sam and Max), not by Telltale.

    Sorry for the bad news...

At the end of all episode (Decembre 2009), on the DVD version, the subtitles will be in Italian, German, French and Spain.

What DVD? Telltale's or some european distributor's? And you know it for sure (in that case, where it is said?), or you're just guessing (taking the Sam&Max game as example)?

In Italy, english is considered like an optional (I'm italian). At school you learn really basic english, and the english was not mandatory at low-medium schools 10 years ago: now, people that are older than 20 have serious problems with the language (me too! I can read it without problems, but I can't write it good). For example, my girlfriend studied only french at school, and at university she had a lot of problems with the mandatory english test.
Anyway, I think that localized subtitles are a good way to let kids play at games (when I was young, I played Monkey Island because it had italian subtitles!)

I think that the fact that many, but non all, of the threads about international subs were started by italian people is caused by:

    - Many in Italy don't speak english very well; but I don't agree with those that are saying that the cause is school, if You want in italian school You can (and You could... even ten, fifteen years ago) learn english enough to watch a movie, play a game or visit a foreign city. Of course, if You want to work as a translator, school isn't enough and You've to practice it by Yourself and taking further private lessons...

    - In Italy MI had a quite big success. Many fans, some don't speak english well enough to understand every single joke in a language that isn't their own. Actually, I really would like to see how many that are claiming "go learn some english" are really capable to understand *everything* in TOMI. I mean everything, not 80% or 90%.

    - It's also quite significant that in Italy almost every movie or tv series is dubbed, and dubbing is really high quality.

    My two cents...

I'm Italian, I studied English at school and I'm still studying it at university, but many people here don't speak it...Do you think Italian people learn English in order to play MI? No, some of them just won't buy it 'cause can't understand it...Same thing in France, Germany, Spain and somewhere else...CMI in Italy had a great success, many of the friends of mine (for examples) have played it (also) because of the full translation (subtitles and voices). So I can play it 'cause I speak a bit of English, but imagine all the Italian kids: do they have to know the complex "monkey island" English at the age of 7 y.o.??? How can they??? They can't...result?? They can't play the game...When I was 7 y.o. I started playing MI...if it hadn't been in italian, I couldn't have played it...and maybe now I wouldn't know the MI games...it's a chain...reflect guys...

To those who say that it's a shame many Italians don't speak English and they MUST study it: I think YOU ALL should study Italian and our culture, you would have a lot to learn...

    *snip*
Am I the only one picturing someone violently hacking at a keyboard and foaming at the mouth here?

Geez - even if English isn't your first language think about your tone before you post, it's not as if etiquette would differ much depending on the language you're using...

Naaah, my tone is calm, actually I don't care if a game is in English or not, I was just explaining why a translation of the game would be a good idea and I was answering to whom who always say that us Italians don't speak English meaning that we are stupid and ignorant beacause of this...
Believe me Leak, I haven't got any problem :)
But i repeat: u should learn and know Italian culture...

    Of course that.
All I wanna know is who is going to make these subtitles (Telltale or some european distributor) and if I can get these subtitles for free if I buy the english game now.

    Probably.
and if I can get these subtitles for free if I buy the english game now.
Probably not - if you bought the game from Telltale and not from the distributor that will be doing the actual translation said distributor would actually be making a loss, since they give you something but don't gain anything in return.

And, I'm afraid, last time I checked most companies are a business, not a charity...

But if it is Telltale itself who finally makes the translation, since you originally bought the game from them, they can perfectly give you the translation for free (or, at least, not for the full game price), like an actualization patch or something. Or, even better, in the Collector's DVD, even if that means a little delay on the DVD launching date. That's my point, and that's what I wanna know.

I'm pretty sure that if Telltale announces that the Collector's DVD will be multilingual, the sales will wildly increase.
Most of the non-english-speaking people in this forum don't really need the translation for ourselves (since we are taking part in an english written forum, we CAN understand english), but we want it for playing with our brothers/sisters or even parents, which is my case. We don't have any problem buying the english game now and wait till neccesary for the DVD with the translation. But we are not buying the game directly to Telltale because we don't know how that translation will come, and we are waiting for some news that clear our doubts.
And we are just a little part of the people who will buy the game if there's a guarantee on having localized subtitles.
