The Walls were built to protect the Titans from Levi (or Rivaille). Unfortunately, it was discovered that there was a critical flaw in the Wall's design... that the gates opened from the INSIDE. So they had the Colossal and the Armored Titans break the Gates in Wall Maria so they could rebuild them properly. It took ten of thousands of Titans to effect the renovations. Now Wall Maria is functioning perfectly. Unfortunately, because the Maria Gates now open from the outside, those who entered Maria are now trapped between Maria and Rose (whose Gates still open from the inside and thus allows Levi to roam the Maria/Rose Gap at his leisure).
Never forget the sacrifice of those brave Titans that entered Maria knowing full well the fate that awaited them even in succes.
