One things I really loved about EFMI and one thing I hated; spoilers
Okay, EFMI is somewhat known as the black sheep of the series, but I actually really enjoyed the game. I want to see if anyone agrees with what I really loved about it. I loved how the game started out with something very simple, an election for governor, obtaining a deed for a mansion, and a villain buying up the Caribbean. But as you go on, the plot gets much more complicated and everything that seems to be apart plot-wise are all connected in one big conspiracy.
I love that type of storytelling and it makes certain things in the beginning make more sense once you know what happens. Everything that seemed random and a coincidence was actually all part of a plot of take over the Caribbean. Tales of Monkey Island is doing the same thing. They are taking what appears to be a very simple quest and story and making it much more complicated by putting in all these twists and sub-plots, very good move indeed. EFMI had a lot of issues, but the the story and how it was structured was a great part for me.
The one thing I HATED about the game was what they did with LeChuck. LeChuck never looked more pure evil and powerful in that game in his demonic form. But I hated how our favorite villain got put in a back-seat for an old man with a cane with a duck engraved in the handle. I thought the game would've been much better had Ozzie been working for LeChuck and not vice versa. Although I guess it really wouldn't have made that much of a difference. I hope Tales does something very great with LeChuck and hope he remains the main threat.
Those are my thoughts. I actually loved EFMI (although I already like Tales better) and a lot of the story helped with that. What made me really hate certain parts of the game was LeChuck going from superior to lackey.

There's already a few threads on this subject, so i'm basically repeating myself here, but the basic way to look at the MI world changed in EMI from "straight forward, fantasy but coherent/realistic pirate world with jokes and anachronisms thrown on top" to an actual mix of the real world and the pirate one.
I'm not saying it's wrong as such, but it just doesn't work for me, and i think that's what ruined most of EMI. And even though it's handled better in tales, it does disapoint me a bit, cause it seems telltale has basically adopted the same approach.
But as far as the writing itself is concerned, it's true, it WAS a pretty good story.
With everything they had done, I could see why they had done it and why they thought it was a good idea.
The move to 3D and to the consoles was because they felt that that's what they needed to do in order for adventure games to start making money again.
The new villain was possibly because they felt they needed to do more than just show LeChuck again.
The story was a bit weak because... um... well okay, I just found one exception to my rule, but I think my point is mostly valid. ^_^;;
Well it wasn't so much the contents of the story that I loved, but how the story evolved. Something simple that gets very complicated and ends completely different then you imagined. The story itself could've been better but how it unfolded little by little was what I loved. Tales is gonna be the same with tons of twists and subplots. And the last episode will end like nothing we can ever imagine. Adds a lot more depth to the story.
I agree. In fact I don't see why people complain about EFMI. It is just as good as the others. TMI is better, though.
I thought that allowed the writers to show a different side of LeChuck. For me, his personality really came together in this game - before, he was just a force of evil. To be honest, EMI made me hope that in MI5 - which I expected to come out relatively soon after the fourth part, heh - Guybrush and LeChuck would team up to fight a greater threat.
I never really like plot lines like that. For some villains it would work, but not with LeChuck in my opinion. While he has a comical side, I think he has done WAY too much for Guybrush and him to join forces. I mean LeChuck must have murdered thousands, if not millions, of people by the time Tales start. And we're not talking about just plain old murder, he tortured people in horrible ways, used an amusement part to slaughter thousands after enslaving hundreds to build it. He even tried to murder the woman he "loved". LeChuck is the very representation on hell itself. That's why I didn't like him working for a villain who only failed to murder an old guy and make tourist resorts.
