  • It has already been discussed, Robert Kirkman does not intend to reveal what caused the outbreak, it shall remain a mystery. :P

  • Im not sure how it started but I remember when people actually believed in zombies and were making survival kits and buying pools and boats so they didn't get eaten ..... I still laugh at that ,but I also remember when people thought 2012 was the end of the world :P

  • Kirkman wrote a book.

  • I'm one of those people....... kinda.. In a very limited way. It's more about the fun of prepping than anything. The cool thing about preparing for zombies is that it prepares you for real natural disasters. It's like belonging to a club and bullshitting

  • Zombies starting really has only a few believable options... Well kind of believable. A virus, contamination of some kind (chemicals, meteorites, radiation ect), aliens, or some sort of afterlife thing (When hell is full the dead will walk the earth - Dawn of the Dead).... I can't think of anything else. Anyone else? It could be possible that the end of the series will have either been a dream, or someone who's insane.

  • That's true... so you do have a point, hope I didn't offend you :P

  • Well , since the outbreak effects both people who contract the disease through a bite and people who die but don't have their brain destroyed , I've developed a theory:

Everyone in the TWD universe is already infected. The cell or gene or whatever is asleep inside someone , until a catalyst (Death or a Walker bite)causes it to wake up and move through the body. Now , how this happened might be a range of things , from bad water to a common genetic mutation. I'm kind of inclined to go with the second one , because it seems like it would explain why when someone dies with their brain undamaged they come back as zombies. But since no one that we know of in the TWD universe is immune , the genetic mutation would have to have over a 90% recurrence in people.

    Curious. Veeeeerrrryyyy curious.

  • Sounds like he can't think of a way either lmao.

I assume how it works is that the virus that causes reanimation spreads over pretty much the entirety of the US. The thing to keep in mind is that the virus that causes reanimation is completely dormant; it only causes reanimation. There's no signs or symptoms of it when you're alive.

You know how volcanoes spew clouds of ash for miles? Think of it like that. The virus spreads over the US and infects everyone. Since it's dormant, no one even knows that they're infected, and from that point forward, anyone who dies without brain trauma reanimates. First it starts as isolated cases of crazy people biting other people, then both sick people and bitten people begin dying, then reanimating and biting/killing who ever is close to them. Then the domino effect ensues as more people get bitten or killed, and reanimate. Then panic eventually breaks out, people go crazy, zombies take advantage of the hysteria to kill even more people, then it just keeps getting worse and worse until it's a full-on apocalypse.

I like to think that the infectious bites are a side effect to the reanimation process. The process that causes people to reanimate also causes the creation/secretion of a toxin within the body that is invariably fatal to humans. Thus, any direct blood contact with zombie gunk will cause an irreversible fever that will invariably cause death, regardless of how 'fresh' a zombie is, unless the affected area is immediately amputated. The age of a zombie just adds to the effects of the already deadly bite. If you get bit by a new zombie, you get an incurable infection. If you get bit by a super old, severely rotted zombie, not only do you get the same incurable infection, you probably get a bunch of other diseases as well. So in a way, it's probably a good thing that the bite kills you before all the other awful stuff does.

  • Could be a disease that had spread from one person to the next and so forth.

  • Yeah true. :P

Sounds like he can't think of a way either lmao.
