What do you think about Final Fantasy 13?

I have an odd opinion toward Final Fantasy 13.

By all appearance, the plot is strange and the characters are weirdly written. It is hard to understand the setting of the world. The world and culture isn't properly explained in-game and you have to read countless bunch of data-log to understand something.

Although I was rather bored by the repetitive gameplay and not so exciting plot, I do find myself liking some part of the game. There were a few moments that I find quite emotional and the soundtrack is quite good in my opinion.

What do you think about the game?

  • While I enjoyed the battle system, I found FFXIII to be one of the weakest of the series due to the lackluster storyline and overall lack of world-building without needing to resort to reading Datalogs, unlikable and annoying characters with little in-game backstories, corny and cheesy script, and incredibly linear gameplay and level design with an abundance of cut-scenes that disrupts the flow every now and then.

Dartigan offers a comical jab at the entire game, which also sums up quite a few good points regarding about the game's flaws:

  • I really liked it when it came out. I thought the combat was intense and exciting, I liked the characters,it had beautiful visuals for the time, and the soundtrack was decent. The plot itself was easily its weakest part, and yeah I agree that the lore they created was convoluted as hell.

  • The set up of the world is interesting and very creative, the graphics are shiny too, but the story was weak and I didn't care about any of the characters. Out of the whole series, only the second game XIII-2 appeals to me but even that has its sets of flaws. I did try to play FFXIII at one point, but the repeating gameplay of the endless long corridors with monsters, followed by a boss battle got on my nerves, and it wasn't like you could skip these fights, you had to level up.

I got more enjoyment out of the Spoony's insanely long review for FFXIII than the game itself, no jokes.

  • Ive enjoyed playing all three of them. Its very dense mythology but I like that. I enjoyed just following the story at my own pace.

  • I thought the writing on the characters were very hot or miss, but when it hit, I really enjoyed their company and found their journey to be compelling. When it missed, the dialogue was either pretty cheesy or just lackluster.

I actually think XIII-2 is the weakest in the 13 trilogy.

I found it fun, I wish it could've been more as it's own original game rather than a sequel to FFXIII, and to have done more with the time travelling business as well that the game didn't really dive into other than being confusing. The retextured same levels got a bit old and apparently because of time constraints a few segments got cut that could've really helped the game some more.

And are you kidding me, Lightning Returns was AWFUL! I think what disappointed me that the ending of FFXIII-2 set up some really creepy stuff and what did we get? A cheap magical girl dress game where you spend hours exploring a world that could've been made on the PS2 while talking to NPC's Square were too lazy to even animate proper cutscenes for. It's like Square couldn't even give a damn by the end.

  • There are good moments, unfortunately it just really wasn't my thing :( I think one of the reasons the second game appealed to me was because it reminded me a little of Kingdom Hearts made as a Final Fantasy game, and overall despite being smaller it was just more fun like the quick times events and even the live-triggers with dialogue options and costumes that encouraged you to replay. I must have gone through it several times now, it's just a shame more time wasn't put into its production because there's plenty of times things felt rushed or repetitive puzzles there just to add more time to the game.

I'm sad Spoony didn't do a review of that one too. I know he hated the second game and I just really wanted to see him make jokes out of it XD

  • I never played any of the final fantasy games, so im not sure. :P

  • It was alright, well I've only been able to find and play XIII-2, I liked the game but I felt like I wasn't really doing much at all.

  • It's underrated. Not as underrated as FF12, though.

Cracked: 5 Reasons Final Fantasy Failed Worse Than Any Franchise Ever

I haven't had a chance to play XIII yet. I finally have a computer powerful enough to play it, but I can't get it with the English voices so I'm probably wait until I can. Actually, for who knows what reasons a lot the steam releases aren't available in Korea, and I don't have a TV, let alone a console.

  • True, I love XII, the characters (not Vaan), the locations, the story, it's really enjoyable and it complete gets looked over. Honestly, I thought it was the best since VIII (and if I take off the nostalgia googles, probably better.)

  • Lightning Returns, all I know was that Lightning and the group somehow ended up in our world or something similar.

I found the combat in lightning returns to be the best in the trilogy, and thats where i got the most enjoyment out of it. The music was still solid and the story, while convuluted as fuck, was interesting to a degree imo.

;.; yeah, the combat and music was fun. Just didn't enjoy the plot or the production value or the design. They could've done a whole lot of a better job :( that's why I don't like it.
