Snapping?

Did anyone else realize an unusual amount of snapping in ToMI? It's like the developers spent a week working on getting the characters to snap, then, when it finally worked, decided to milk it for all the hard work they put into it. [just a theory. Your's?]

I'm not annoyed by it, but it certainly stands out.

Not sure what you mean by snapping... do you mean the characters automatically returning to their previous position after another animation has played? I only ever really noticed it on the glassblowing pirate.

    I didn't even notice it

I know what you mean hplikelike. I didn't mind it, but I remember seeing the newspaper editor and the man with power pirate toys (Sorry, not good with names yet!) do it. Did every other character do it?

Haha, I definitely noticed it. ^^ I'm pretty sure the snapping is a stock animation "gesture" that's being applied to the characters through the Telltale Tool. If you've played Telltale's Sam & Max games, you may have noticed that all the characters have individual sets of gestures they'll repeat periodically which are unique to him/her. TMI seems to be a bit different in that the "snapping" is something almost all the people on Flotsam do, as opposed to just one of them.

I noticed it. I'm not sure its significant, but I do remember thinking, "why do they keep snapping while they talk?" I understand one character snapping to emphasize points, but that many was just confusing. It must be part of the Flotsam dialect. j/k

Guybrush does it a few times

    {I mean the finger snapping. verb. as in "I got a great idea! I'll show it with a snap"}

Oh, never even thought of that haha! Well, I guess snapping is better then them standing around as stiff as a board huh? A little variety wouldn't hurt, but then I've never done 3D animation before, so I'd have no idea how in depth that could get!

Those guys love snapping too much, probably. Hopefully that fad will pass in the later episodes.

    Yes, I noticed.

I almost wonder if it was a part of the Pox... ;)

I think the joke where Guybrush tries to snap with his evil hand would have been funnier if everyone else was snapping right before he tried.

Nah, probably the QUEST FOR THE ULTIMATE SNAP. It requires a ton of legendary fingers.

Perhaps it's a secret code that when you play all the snap animations together, you get a morris code explaining the whole plot.

I didn't notice the snapping myself, but I do agree that any ambiguous (animated) statement, no matter how effective it is in a moment, can get monotonous after seeing it many times. They're kinda like chase scenes: if that's all a movie has and no story, then are they truly effective, or just confusing? If you're all snap and none of that, then what are you really saying?

Hmmm now that I think about it...... I think I might snap a lot for no reason.... Maybe that is why I didn't notice

hplikelike: I think you just affected the course of the game's development. Also, how do you pronounce your name?

H P like-like. I made it when I was younger. It's a combination of Harry Potter and the likelike enemy from the Legend of Zelda. Just curious, why did you ask how it was pronounced? Technically, on a forum, someone could have the username {:c)+</: despite the fact it's impossible to pronounce.

When the newspaper guy, Nipperkin, snapped, I thought it went with his character.
Then all the other "Nipperkin Look-a-likes" started snapping, and I realized it was just a stock animation in the character model.

Im pro snapping I think the whole game should be snapping in morse code In fact.

While on the topic of emotes and movements from the characters, I think the animations in general could use a bit of work. Maybe it's because I'm an oldschool CMI fan, but I gotta say I'm no big fan of the "raise eyebrow and give 'em some 'tude" animations. I always thought especially Guybrushes' lines came off funnier when he looked completely neutral and expressionless. He seemed more bitter and sceptical about his whole situation then. TMI's expressions sometimes seem too over the top and "cool/hip" to really fit the Monkey Island style.

Guybrush was ticked off when he couldn't snap his fingers after washing ashore on Flotsam, and is making up for lost time. His zeal in doing so started a fad amongst the Flotsam population, who think that's just the piratey style of the time in the world at large.

Huh. I love the facial animations. You can get away with it when you're a sprite, but I felt like the Guybrush in Curse was FAR too expressionless, the few facial animations being a delight.

It wasn't a stylistic decision to have him give off all the emotional expression of a log. It was a technical limitation.

I liked the facial expressions in chapter1 but I do noticed this snapping also. Guybrush does it several times also :)

So it's official - Guybrush finally has snapped.

Not that I can blame the guy after those five games - particularily the fifth one... :D

    I like this theory. :D

Just been playing Sam & Max season 2 (specifically episodes 4 & 5) and I've noticed a fair amount of finger snaps from them both.

I also love the facial and physical animations! I even liked snapping even if I haven't noticed it too much in the game as you, guys. Please give us snap insult fighting in a new chapter!

Even if Guybrush was pretty unexpressive in the first game, it has been much enhanced in LeChuck's Revenge. I found so funny when Guybrush had his eyes wide open in surprise when the skeletons started dancing. Ans yes, while COMI is pretty amazing graphically with its hand painted backdrops, I agree that animation could be even better.

Maybe each island in the game will have a gesture-sound associated with it (clapping, knee-slapping, etc) and that will form the basis of a puzzle in the last episode

Like like is the name of a road on Oahu that mainlanders always mispronounce. They pronounce it like your screen name. Just curious.

I don't mind him actually making expressions, I just don't like some of those that are in TMI. They're way too exagurated and "cool". I thought CMI's animation was perfect, and even if it was limited it had expressions that were pleasing to look at. What I'm trying to say is...

I can't stand raised eyebrows in every single peice of kids-related media I see nowdays

But what about the poor people who only bought the last episode because the monkey in their pocket stole all their change and that's all that they could afford.

Yeah, I commented this on another thread. It happens 3 times when Guybrush gets on the first island. I thought it was strange

LOL, glad I'm not the only one who noticed that! I thought it was hilarious. :)
