ToMI-Lock-up/Crash- XP-Pro, ATI 4850

edited July 2009 in Game Support
Have tried to run game and it seems like the video is locking and/or crashes completly-sound usually ok but sometime locks as well. I have to power-off reboot. Usually happens sometime after I get the note from the mast or shortly after. Am running Windows XP-Pro-4MB ram and have updated all video drivers for my ATI 4850-512K ram;
Driver Packaging Version 8.62-090520m1-081744C-ATI Catalyst™ Version 09.6 Provider ATI echnologies Inc.
2D Driver Version 6.14.10.6962
2D Driver File Path System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Video/{BCFB6305-DB02-43B3-BCC3-5B472E9CA5FA}/0000
Direct3D Version 6.14.10.0671
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.8673
Catalyst™ Control Center Version 2009.0520.1631.27815

I have even rolled back to 4 prior video driver versions with no luck. Have all MS updates, all Chipset updates including sound. Have tried various game settings including the - windowed prop -same result. No evidence of overheating, all other games work ( palyed all Samd & Max) except I get the same problem with the Fright of the Bumbless W&G #1 game I got with this package only a little further into that game.

Have reloaded game several time with no improvement, Direct X updated at install, cut services and about everything else I have seen mentiond here. Same problems in my dual boot RC Windows-7 side.

    I just got my 4850 1GB today and had no problems. But here's what's strange. Some values are different (bold), but it might have to do something with me running Vista 32bit instead of XP:

    Driver Packaging Version 8.62-090520m1-081755C-ATI Catalyst™ Version 09.6 Provider ATI echnologies Inc.
    2D Driver Version 8.01.01.909

    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.8673

    I downloaded my Version from computerbase, because AMDs download site didn't work.

    Since it happens in Windows 7 and XP I could imagine that it is hardware related. Is your Graphics card in any way overclocked, or is the voltage altered?

    You might also check your memory with http://www.memtest86.com/.

    I am just guessing, but it's better than doing nothing.

    I like Dj's guesswork.

    No Overclocking anywhere on system- dead stock- also no overvoltage- all at default levels. I will try memtest tonight when I get home and see if that shows anything, but have no other problem with any graphics or other devices on machine to date and its on 8- 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. Thanks for the comments I am running out of ideas myself.

    This is the exact same crash that I am seeing at the same point in the game (just after the intro, walking around on the ship)!

    Come on support! This issue has been reported in numerous threads and I have yet to see any solutions, just random guesswork...

    In each case the hardware is different and users are reporting that they have latest drivers installed for everything.

    The issue is clearly with ToMI being flaky...can we please get some advice and a resolution as soon as possible?

    Dj & Will;
    Dj, you guess good. Thanks, you seem to have hit it on the nose. After running Memtest86+ it showed errors on one RAM modual in upper memory blocks(Tests 5&6 showed errors). Pulled it and I am ablt to run OK in Windows 7 side- full screen 1024x768, and #9 mode-with nothing in background dsiabled. I have gotten to island and have been looking around jungle for about and hour with no problems.

    Game looks OK in XP-Pro side so far, though I only tried it in windowed mode( still have .prop installed), except I do get one glitch on ship where ATI reports an error, but game resumes afterward and have been to island. Havent played far enough to tell much in XP side, but am sending RAM back to Corsair for replacement.

    I have seen no other evidence of a bad RAM before this, and have no idea how long that part of RAM has been bad. System is about one year old with never a glitch or memory error since build. Thanks for the tip and I'll post in a few days when new RAM arrives and I can start a new game on the XP-Pro side and give it a good workout. I will aslo try W&G again and see what happens as well.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Glad to hear that. Maybe i should take another look at some of the other threads with similar errors.
