Monkey Island 1 + 2 Remakes

Hi everyone,
I couldn't find a thread about this subject(sorry if there are some) so I thought it would be the best if I creat one by myself.
So lets start, when i was in a Games-Shop this week, one of the shopman told me that Lucasarts is planig to remake the first and the second Part in shape of the 3rd... or maybe fifth part of Monkey island?
And now my Question is, has anyone of you guys heard about something like that, and if are there any reviews, screenshots or anything else...?

Really looking forward to your answers :)

    Come on guys...:(

    Anyway...

Tales of Monkey Island Is basically Monkey Island 5, it's in 3d and has a new episode every month for 5 episodes.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition had been released today and is a HD remake of the original Monkey Island with the option to play the orignal version with the press of a button.

LucasArts released Secert of Monkey Island: Special Edition today:
    http://store.steampowered.com/app/32360/

This is a 3d "remake" of the first game (not quite a remake, more of an upgrade).

There are currently no plans to do this to any of the others. They have said that they might however if this one sells really well. But nothing has been confirmed. So that person lied to you.

    It's not 3D. It's 2D.

Was that shopman's name Gilbert R. by chance? If not, then probably not.

This wasn't really advertised by a remake of 1 in its own style was released on Steam and 360 today.

Lucas Arts said if it was popular they would remake other Lucasarts classics. Recently on Facebook they asked people what they would like to see remade next. Most the people said "MI2".

On Twitter the same guy asked what peoples faviroute Lucasarts games are. It turned out to be MI2 and MI3.

My bet is they will do the whole series of Monkey Island.

at the end of SOMI:SE it says guybrush threepwood will return....
  • edited July 2009
Playing Curse today, it could use a SE. (Escape DEFINITELY could use a graphical update and some tweaks here or there.) Most of the problems in Curse are just the character outline looking off, abrupt ending that is missing a cutscene and more resolutions are needed. Pretty quick SE fix really, profitable and easy.

EDIT: That Guybrush will return thing basically sells it to me they're already planning MI2.

Yes that was the original text in the original game...

Btw. just to give a sane answer to the original post:
Is this a remake of the first monkey island
    Yes
    Ugraded graphics
    Yes
    Upgraded sound
    Yes
    Sold over Steam
    Yes

    Never heard of it :)
  • edited July 2009
It's actually NOT the text from the original game. Original game says to go to sleep.

Or to be more specific, it says "Turn off your computer and go to sleep!!!"

But, that doesn't make sense on Xbox.

    No, it's hand drawn 2D.

Actually EMI could be made into full 3D instead of prerendered 2D. The 3D backgrounds exist somewhere in LucasArts and the Telltale engine can probably handle the detail levels. It could work. Hahah, it would be nice to rerecord Elaine and give an "English Accent Option" in the menu.

I think curse is perfect as it is

Not much can be done in the SE so doubt it would happen

Just ... no. ToMI is NOT Monkey Island 5, it is intentionally set AFTER an imaginary MI5.

    Sorry if I'm a little over-sensitive :D

It's pre-rendered 3D probably but it's touched up by hand as sprites. Both points are meaningless, however, as the game is rendered in 2D and not 3D so you're still wrong.

Have you played it recently? I finished it again yesterday. It's still one of the best adventure games ever - arguably better than MI2, but I like MI2 better personally - but it has flaws.

    The LeChuck
curse at the end cutscene looks awful and the ending is ultra abrupt. They could splice in the INTENDED ending cutscenes they took out (they wanted one that was killed) and the intended ending puzzle.
It also is hard to get to run. Some people (apparently) have troubles with glitches in Scummvm, although I don't experience those problems. It also looks awful in higher resolution and could be scaled. The characters also have blank looks non-stop and the characters stick out - the technical term eludes me at the moment.

Games like Zak McKraken, Maniac Mansion, MI2 have a much more pressing argument for a Special Edition. MI3 could use one but it doesn't need one as much.

Ron Gilbert's Secret of Monkey Island is to Dave Grossman's MI5.

Very true. The only the MI3 REALLY needs is to be put up on Steam fully working with Windows Vista / Windows 7 but they wouldn't do that until the MI2:SE has been released.

Maniac Mansion would REALLY benefit from an update, especially if they gave it a similar style to DOTT.

I'd also be happy if they trimmed off some of the extra verbs.

I'm not too ultra impatient for Maniac Mansion:SE though as I just ran through the Deluxe version which anyone can get as freeware.

About SoMI:SE Just finished it last weekend, and thoes "upgrades" are terrible! (exept voice acting and music) background are just UGLY! Often you can see oryginal backgroun showing under the "hi res version" In my opinion, oryginal gfx looks soooo much better becouse oryginal art was created with pasion an dedication, SE bckground is a JOKE! I dont know if this co called "artist" spend more then one weeken to do all of SE gfx. SE should stand for "Slap in the face Edition..."

Not freeware. Unofficial unauthorized fan remake. It was made by a fan and LA asked him to take it down. Some places still have it, though. Aside from a single cutscene bug that crashes the game near the end, I really enjoyed it. I wish someone would take ScummC and use the graphics to make a true 256-colour SCUMM version.

That's interesting. I didn't even know that. As I've owned Maniac Mansion for years it didn't instill any guilt in me - kind of like how I don't mind downloading the unofficial King's Quest III remake as there isn't a comparable product today and I own the legit copy.
  • edited July 2009
Yeah, IA's King's Quest III remake isn't officially licensed like the AGDI remakes are. I've always wondered why they were never approached when AGDI were.

Maybe it's because I've secretly read your forum posts there?

Of course the funny thing about games like KQ3 is that over the years it's one of the games I've lost while moving or had destroyed but still legitimately paid for. Shady gray area, those fan remakes.

    Personally I don't care.

Well the AGDI remakes aren't. They're fully legal as they have permission and were officially licensed by Vivendi. IA does not. Probably never will, either. I doubt ActiVision would be as easy-going about fangames using their IPs as Vivendi was.

I read some of their posts on KQIII on their forums and I thought I saw you posting on how you worked on their score for them. Essentially it was a bad joke.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition good look new sound cool when will it be on store shelves
  • edited July 2009
I would love to see a special edition of CMI which simply re-scanned in the original paintings\backgrounds and animations in high definition and added some of the new scumm engine perks like smooth scrolling. Assuming the original paintings are still around somewhere, it would be a straight forward task, and the result would be stunning because the artwork is stunning to begin with.
