So how about an original IP?

edited August 2009 in General Chat
Couldn't find anything about this in a search, though I doubt that I could even if there is something, I mean, Original is a rather common word... Anyway, yeah, so I've played all of TellTale's Same and Max games, and I have ToMI and Out From Boneville. I see that they've got a bunch of other licensed games as well. So what I want to ask is, well, like the title says, are you guys interested in doing an original IP?

I have been thinking about that since the release of Strong Bad Cool Game for Attractive People. The world is milking dry with sequels after sequels of games/movies/books/music.

A new IP is something I've been hoping for since Season Two of Sam and Max, specifically "Chariots of the Dogs". As much as I love the old adventures...I loved them because they were new and exciting, not because they helped me build a repertoire of jabs and in-jokes that only smart people will understand.

Yes, I realize how hypocritical that is. However, my guilt is assuaged by the fact that it's also funny.

I've been saying it for a while now. After TMI and possibly S&M S3, I'd love a brand new IP.

I think Telltale's incredibly talented staff deserve a chance to put out their own ideas, and that will happen one day I'm sure, but for the moment I guess that established franchises such as Monkey Island or Wallace and Gromit mean less development and more production time, given that they operate on a monthly schedule.

I'd personally love to see what they would come up with, especially in a science fiction setting, or more precisely a Star Trek style spoof. Or maybe just captain Guybrush Threepwood XI in space. :D

Nah! No Science-fi stuff... just something humourous with chocolate cupcakes and lots of colourful sprinkles on top, please?

I don't really care if it's a licensed IP or an original one as long as it makes for a good game. The automatic audience of licensing certainly helps.

I do hope Sam and Max Season Three doesn't so heavily reference/spoil S1 and S2 though. I was going to play 203 with my sister but realized it spoiled all of S1 and didn't start my mom on it for similar reasons even though she would've liked the hint system.

I'm just tired of living in the past. Now that adventures sort of have a possible future again, I'd like to see some new games. The old times were great and I thoroughly enjoy these reboots and I'd welcome more, but I want to have some new experiences and now semi-know ahead of time what I'm getting into and what kind of story I'm playing and generally what to expect.

I think original IPs will come eventually. But as the future just suddenly seemed to become bright again, I see an imminent future of mostly remakes and licensed games with indie developers making the original IPs. The nostalgia factor seems to have really revitalized things. With the remakes of great games we'll hopefully pick up a lot of new adventure gamers and then there'll be a bigger audience.

I'm quite sure Telltale will eventually create an original IP. Meanwhile there are a lot of other adventure game developers who do indeed create original IPs. Telltale does a great work with the licensing, though.

This way they've also started to build a name for themselves, so they kind of have a 'built-in' audience now for an original IP out of the existing Telltale fansm that weren't there yet by the time of S&M Season 1.

Silly as it sounds, I think Telltale is so good at handling familiar characters that I feel no need to encourage them to make a new IP.

A funny SciFi story would be great IMO..

Beside of The Dig II i would love to see something really new and different as well.

right, they're getting along just fine at the moment. i am pretty sure, they will eventually come up with an original ip, but i don't want them to do it, just because it would be possible now or people are expecting it.
if they have a great idea and the time is right...it might happen.

I think my feeling is a bit more selfish (although also for the good of the world), rather than in Telltale's interest. My logic is this: If Telltale has 3 "slots" open for games they can make, I want them to make 3 licensed games, because if Telltale doesn't get the license, someone else might, and then the game will be bad.

For instance, some other company is going to make a game based on House. If Telltale had gotten that license, the game would be good, but since they didn't, the game will be bad.

So basically, Telltale would be doing the world of licenses a disservice by making original IP games :D

I'd like to maybe see a Dungeons & Dragons sort of themed P&C game. I think TTG would pull it off nicely :)

Definitely. I don't mind if it's a brand new creation or taken from another medium (see my post about Jasper Fforde) but I'd enjoy something SciFi related. Humour is definitely essential in order for me to enjoy an adventure game, but I can't imagine Telltale doing something that isn't funny so there are no worries there.

Oh seriously? I'm disappointed to even hear this.

Urgh me too. How the devil would a House game work? Even Telltale wouldn't make that successful...

Yes they could. Well, someone could. Anybody ever play Phoenix Wright? That's how a House game could work. Collect evidence, crack lies, solve mysteries.

I'd trust Telltale to get the formula right more than I'd trust... "Legacy Interactive."

Was more a "see, they have every intention of developing their own IP in due course" than a "they have 3 months left to make good on that quote" point I was trying to make.

Yeah, video games aren't the most predictable of economic markets.

I think it's too early for TTG to be heading into a new IP, but I don't think it's too far off. I sort of expect it to be Sam & Max Season 3, <something else>, then maybe a new IP title.

If they do have a new IP then they could have comptitions for names of games charecters

    I'd be OK with that.

I'm all for a brand new, original adventure series. I'd like to see something really whacked with random humour, like Naked Gun.
Or you can just make another Space Quest :D
