Animation Thread

edited April 2016 in General Chat

What kind of animation films are you excited for and what kind of animation films do you really like? Old ones are good too. Here are some interesting ones coming up for me -

Stop-motion - American - Same producer as Coraline and Corpse Bride

Mix CGI - Chinese. The animators are Korean, and it's the same company that did The Legend of Korra

France - One of the largest animation industires in the world - Despicable Me was made by a French company - anyway, here's an excellent IP with games attached.

  • Not sure if I should necro this (if no one answers I'll let it die), but I want to ask, what do people look for in animation film, what attracts you, and what makes you want to see a movie? What things do you like/dislike about animation as opposed to live film?

Partially inspired by this amazing music video that came out recently, that I'm totally excited for the movie for.

  • I have always loved Disney's animation. Especially their hand-drawn animation. I grew up with it and it just seemed so magical and the feeling never changed as I've gotten older. I just wish they would do more films that is hand-drawn.

I just like the cool visuals it can bring to animation, or attention to detail in a backdrop. Animation is fun bbecause you can make anything you want with that hand-drawn feel, or 3D cgi, and it all works together perfectly fine as opposed to a live action, where you can add other things through cgi to real life, but sometimes it doesn't work out...

EDIT: Sort of like those trailers you mentioned above, in Kubo or Big Fish, it looks great and doesn't feel out of place. The animators made it themselves, all using the same animation feel to it, whereas if it was a live-action movie, you'd be restricted to locations and props, green screen studios and the like... Everything is real, and in the world as a physical thing in animation, which makes things so much better. (I don't hate live-action stuff, I just prefer animation more.)

I like everything animated really. I mean I even watch FLASH animations, North Korean propaganda cartoons. Soviet & American Propaganda Cartoons ( like some of it is insane have to understand the politics to get the humor though ). Disney, Ghibli... etc etc. I Love Stop Motion Animation as well. Coraline is easily my favorite of them as well. I saw a trailer for Kubo a while ago, I will be looking forward to it. Though i'm not really looking forward to any animated film. I often pick them up after the hype is over. I don't like getting hyped about anything in particular.

I even love when people use video games, or programs to make epic animated videos. I even love when people take clips and just make an epic or fun video out of it. I just love everything animated in short. Doesn't really matter.

I have to warn everyone though. Regardless who is animated Big Fish & Begonia. It's a Chinese production. Fear the possibility that it will be a major propaganda film. I noticed a lot of Chinese films are literally filled with anti western propaganda, and definitely anti Japanese propaganda, even if it isn't actually stated by name/word. Heck even the Mummy 3 which was co produced by a Chiense company was. I can make a prediction already based on the trailer "China must protect the Oceans, control the Seas, no matter what anyone else says, as the Evil Japanese are killing all the Whales and we must protect the Whales." Is what they're going to try to tell people but without saying it. Why do you think everyone is in red? Including the Whales. CCP color is Red. =D

  • I really want to fucking see The Garden of Sinners. I don't even care if its story is any good or not. Its visuals are goddamn breathtaking.

I'm not sure how much you're kidding or not, but China generally speaking isn't so much interested in promoting its propaganda as it is in preventing politlcally damaging messages. Of course, any form of censorship is a bad one, but I should make that distinction. Again, I think that's horrible, but it doesn't mean that every film produced by China has an inherent propoganda message, it can fly just as long as it doesn't go against the official narrative.

I should also note, the animation company is a Korean one, the same one that animated Legend of Korra.

Well being film companies make billions in China each year, they hold a major market share and can easily influence any film production they darn well please really. Even a large percent of theaters in the USA are now privately owned by Chinese firms and have threaten to ban films that had content in them they do not like, like the Red Dawn reboot for example. Films they're directly involved in often do have anti Japanese or anti western Themes and Pro China themes to boot, and at times even have special scenes in their local editions of the film promoting China as considerably more moral of a place than say the USA like in Iron Man 2. They pervert the film industry, and I'm not kidding about any of it. Most people do not notice because most people do not even pay attention to it or read about it. It's dangerous when an outside country can manipulate our entertainment like China has been trying. China spends billions each year on damage control you can say to foreign media outlets and film studios. It is why most times China is seen in a movie today it's presented positively. Save for a few. People cry when North Korea tried to convince us to ban The Interview, but do not even see China's control over our media. Hollywood's Chinese Theatre (ironically named) is owned by a private Chinese firm for example. Same theatre which Indian Jones, Star Wars and many other block buster films saw their premieres and it was only purchased a few years ago, despite having Chinese in it's name. It was called Chinese because of the construction and art style used when it was built. Imagine if a AAA title was banned from the most iconic theatre in California?

That being said though. I never said it would be, but I wouldn't be surprised.

  • Well, that part I pretty much agree with you. I saw Iron Man 2 on an airplane years ago, so I can't remember, but I know companies are constantly trying to make products which can enter the Chinese market, and that means often means self-censorship and/or needless pandering.

It depends though - obviously we're both speculating because the movie hasn't come out yet and (I'm guessing) neither of us speak Chinese, but something like Big Fish and Begonia, if it's based on historical Chinese culture, I'm all in favor of what looks like a beautiful animation. I don't think it's inherently going to be a propaganda piece. Though, as you say "I never said it woudl be, but I wouldn't be surprised." - I'd be a surprised, by I agree with the general sentiment.

As far as the anti-Japanese/anti-Western themes, could you give a few examples please? I watch a lot of Korean movies (South obvs.), and some of them are blatently anti-American, but I don't think the government has any role in that (actually, on the contrary, the government is very pro-American, it's because of freedom of speech that anti-American films can be projected).

Just randomly, about The Interview, remember people clammoring to show it because of the Sony hack, so I'm not sure I agree with you on that point.

I was given a reminder why I love animation. So I thought I'd bring this thread back in a way. Not in a million years would Hollywood make a Star Wars movie that centers around the Empire, so someone made an animated short, to a brilliant degree. Has a bit of 1980s style Macross mixed into it which is wonderful. Honestly, I prefer this to the real outcome of the Civil War. Makes more sense than a small rebellion and teddy bears winning. hehe

  • Still looking forward to Kubo though. I'm a huge fan of stop motion films really. Heck one of my first favorite films as a child had stop motion dinosaurs. Old B Scifi Movie about people going back in time on a Space ship planet of the apes style and getting stuck in a world with dinosaurs. lol

I'd definitely recommend this other animation of his, if you haven't seen it already.
